It's kinda funny, how bad this game became right after the first battle starts. The writers still haven't learned how this works, and how chuuni doesn't excuse everything. It was
- a predictable as fuck plotdevice battle
-included the protag getting hurt close to dying -> saved by girl -> contract shit that's about as standard cliché as you can get, which is the only reason for this battle
-included the protag saving the girl in a super forced way
-included the protag not wanting anyone to get hurt or die, so he jumped into the two attacking parties like a fucking moron
-the girl found the protagonist cool here (okay, she is a dumb chuuni idiot, so I guess......?)

Do people REALLY like this stuff? I mean, at this point the "please don't fight" trope is so overused, that you better don't give that the protag of all things. Fortissimo showed how this one works. It's another dude, that dude tries and in the end fails because life ain't so nice. Then he fights, because he also knows that there's a line and once you are past that, you gotta do what you gotta do. Otherwise you lose everything you care about.
Here we'll probably get, once again, a shitty written scenario that has to bend around the protagonist (because it IS the protagonist after all) and will not make any sense whatsoever. I don't mind it if the protag treasures life indiscriminately. But I absolutely hate if the story is bent for that, so this kinda of ideal is actually working out in the end. If that could work, there wouldn't be any major conflict in the first place, provided you actually have writing going on, and not just excuses.

I'll be honest. The biggest reason why 3rdeye is on my list is, because they are like the only company hiring Aoba Ringo in a main-role, that's not nukige and not the crappy loli version. You don't have many choices. And I do think they improve. It's just all not very well done.

For the last ingame day I read, you can say that the events are kinda okay when you are at the end. However they just were presented really weirdly and badly, as suddenly the narration kinda just stops and the author hides away thoughts of the protag to later reveal things.
It's first person narration. The reader shouldn't know less than the protag at any point, provided he thinks about it or acts on it. Artificially cutting that out, just to have a plot-twist later makes it just so utterly weird. Probably was supposed to be all "cool" or whatever, but writing-wise it's atrocious if you ask me. If you want to do that, do third person and don't focus so much on "protags". But people still seem to like 3rdeye quite a bit, so maybe this is just me not appreciating "chuuni" enough or whatever.

Well, I'll probably get to Light stuff eventually. It's just that I'm not really interested in Dies Irae (theme-wise), and that kinda makes it hard to find a good starting point. The only thing I know from them is Bokunatsu. Which isn't a lot. And not chuuni anyway.

You really can't know what Dies is like without reading it. There's a reason why even people who don't care about chuuni all that much list it as one of their favorite games. Pretty much every aspect of it is extremely high quality (writing, characters, scenario).
Alternatively you can start with Paradise Lost, that's shorter but also more ghetto.

Just finished Ritterorden. I'm actually stunned. This game is absolutely amazing, and it's hard to believe that it ended up with less than 50 total sales. I'm a big fan of fantasy and this game scratched an itch no other VN has come close to scratching. There's so much I love about this game. The writer is very knowledgeable and the game is filled with interesting perspectives on politics, economics, and just life in a medieval world. When characters eat a cake, there's an explanation for how cakes were even baked back then. The plotting is good too, with each route building on each other until you read the final, climatic route that is an unbelievable explosion of everything that's been foreshadowed to this point. The plot and execution of everything is very, very solid. It feels a lot like A Song of Ice and Fire, aka Game of Thrones. Slow introduction of characters in a complex world and then BAM. A Storm of Swords and a Clash of Kings. Ritterorden is easily on the level of ASoIaF in terms of writing, if not higher. This game is also 熱い as hell. The battles are intense and the characters use every tool at their disposal to try to take each other down. Blood, sweat, last-second tricks... The battles are hella engaging. The 決戦 at the end of the game is one of the hypest things I've read. Interesting writing, great plotting, intense battles... What's not to love? Well, two things. One, it's a low-budget doujin game so there's no voices and t he art can be iffy at times. Two, the beginning of the game and the first route in general can be pretty slow. But if you can look past the budget nature of the work and the slow start, you will find a very good game that's criminally unknown. Ritterorden shot up to be one of my favourite VNs of all time and I give it a solid recommendation.

Played through the first two 9 -nine- episodes. Many thanks to the anon from previous thread for reminding me this series exists.

Without any exaggeration I can say that Sora was a 10/10 heroine and I doubt the next two episodes' girls will manage to live up to her in any way, like holy shit she's just fantastic and basically carries the whole thing, plus the banter is also made better by a voiced protagonist. One of the rare times I've been invested in both the plot and the heroine of the route. I only played the main girl route from Nanarin and dropped Akeiro after a few routes so this game might eventually end up being my favorite from the writer, assuming later episodes also manage to deliver.

Plot wise I'm not sure I like the idea of sequel hooks both in previous and this episode plainly spoiling the villain of the next episode in the fucking epilogue, I mean sure, they're obviously trying to hook the players into buying the next episode but come the fuck on at least pretend to be subtle about it. Aside from that, frankly I haven't been that amazed by any twists so far, and in the second episode as well it feels the game veers somewhat towards tangential heroine specific drama by its end rather than constantly driving the main plot forward. Speaking of plot in general, this series is seemingly taking the somewhat 王道 type approach of every subsequent route being slightly less of a bad end & protag's party getting closer to the villain deal so I'd wish they at least subverted that expectation in some way in the subsequent episodes, how about giving us a really heart crushing true end the next time. Obviously the next episode is going to be about befriending Ren'ya and Ghost while finding more stuff about the REAL background villain, and since we're likely getting 4 episodes the next one will probably also end up being taking a similar approach to the previous two.

As for some "anti-nitpicks", i.e. small things I've really liked so far, as someone who absolutely abhors time loops or alternate timeline games where no character realizes obvious shit like that until the final route, I personally liked that the plot important character actually pays lip service to what happened in previous routes and even briefly explains the thing to the protagonist rather than it being kept as some sort of "secret". Or stuff like the protagonist narrating he didn't fall for Ghost's friendly behavior in the slightest and was looking for a way to escape all along even if he does end up getting fucked regardless, rather than being a complete retard. While stuff like that isn't anything major, I really like the game at least giving (maybe unintentional) slight nods against some mindbogglingly stupid cliches you usually see in this medium. In general, while there hasn't been anything mindblowing so far there hasn't been any WHY moments either.

Also, like some people on EGS rightfully complained, the "you can enjoy these episodes as standalones and even if you're a newcomer" marketing on the official websites for each episode is a straight up lie made up to hide the fact it's one game cut into 4 parts: the routes are obviously intended to be played back to back. Regardless I can't wait for the third episode, but knowing my luck now that I'm somewhat looking forward to something I'll probably end up jinxing it and it'll turn out to be complete shit or the series gets completely canned.

Not as far as I remember. The following contains only tips regarding main gameplay mechanics with zero story spoilers, most of which the game itself also explains right after the prologue, but I put it in brackets in case you want to go in completely blind. At worst you may end up having to skip quite a bit of shit you've already read.

The game warns you about it in early game as well, but remember to ALWAYS keep at least one 宝玉 since you can't open the route map at all or jump to existing bookmarks if you haven't got at least one slotted in. You start with 2 and get more as you progress, meaning more bookmarks and easier navigation. In case you don't have even one, you're forced to start from where the prologue ends (through loading a save from main menu) and manually get to where you dropped one of your 宝玉, but the game never permanently fucks up your entire progress like route completion, other inventory or anything. In any case the game never forces you into a situation where you have to use all of them so you can end up in that kind of situation only if you carelessly forget about the limitation and use the last one in your possession.

Though as a personal advice I'd really recommend you to keep hard saves as well (the game provides slots you can copy your save to) if you ever plan on using a key item, because inventory persists regardless of other stuff and some item may end up being consumed by a choice, i.e. while you can revert before a choice using 宝玉 the other key item won't come back. While you can never completely fuck yourself over with this, in worst case scenario you may end up having to backtrack to a previous route to pick up a vital key item again.

Couldn't get invested enough in the story, as far as I recall. I started it near release and completed Velvet and twin routes: former was an alright introduction, but twins route felt like the worst kind of padding despite my initial expectations, what with throwing the main plot straight out of the window in favor of focusing solely on the girls themselves (and even then it didn't really go much in depth or anything) while other more competent characters supposedly handle the main problem in the background. In general having these sort of characters and alternate solutions that could instantly and safely end the main threat, except the protagonist and co. choose to abstain from picking them "because reasons" rubbed me the wrong way. I can't recall the details at all and I obviously don't know if that route as well ends up having some foreshadowing for later parts so I can't comment on that though, and I'm sure there's some reason given at the end for why everything has to be done the hard way.

I did start a bit of Youko's route as well up until Misato kicks the bucket and the protagonist rages on for a bit and I can't really recall any particular part that made me hate the game or anything, most likely something completely unrelated took my attention and I simply never got around to returning to the game since it hadn't really hooked me by that point.

Went and checked, all the games have Windows 7-10 support now. Only problem is the DRM on each disc, but nothing that AlphaROMdie doesn't solve.

If you really like a specific setting or whatever, it's probably going to be alright. But that's the thing. We had this topic before. One of the reasons why a lot of highly acclaimed games get received a lot less well after translation is, because a lot of people read the game that aren't even interested in its theme, genre or whatever. Doujin games are even worse there, as they usually have the typical doujin game issues (i.e. kinda incomplete feeling, or "bad" art, or whatever).
I myself really enjoyed pic related, but I dunno how much you would enjoy it, if you don't particularly value female protagonists (while not being an otome game), Cthulhu and heavily psychological stuff.

Also keep in mind, that the game has several endings, and I don't remember that the mythos thing was underused or went nowhere. Did you clear them all? The biggest remaining questions involve the third major character (Kazami), how the relationship between Subaru and Ruu (and as such also Subaru and the other characters) is going to be, and the final reveals in the last ending. Expansions on the cult stuff could be also fine, but it does have a dedicated enough ending to be okay, provided you read a little between the lines.

But to me here it just seems like the opposite with how Kouki falls in love with the worst girl for no reason at all.
Akina's affection and reasons are obvious, especially after they win their first tournament match. MC on the other hand is just weird.
He keeps blabbering about them being teammates/comrades and not being able to do anything without her since she is their ace and leader etc and finally when push comes to shove it turns out he didn't want her to leave because he came to like her as a woman but never noticed it until the last moment, which is by the way complete bullshit. There was literally nothing between them, not even any kind of chemistry except for Akina herself obviously liking the MC and slowly changing her opinion in regards to his abilities especially after he becomes their coach.　
But hell she was the one who objected and was against him for the most of 'common' route and not entirely for tsun reasons either which almost got him executed.

Since you've been reading eroge for 10 years or so you should also know it is one of the main strengths of this medium and the main reason it's still alive. You can name exceptions of course which did really well without having any h whatsoever but I'm sure you also know those are the exception and in the minority.

I'm just saying this in general but this medium has always been stuck in sort of a stasis especially lately. Meanwhile look at LNs, they weren't a big deal even 10 years ago and look how incredibly popular they've become. They're cheap, they get to the point without being bloated for the sake of being bloated, and just easy to consume. There's also isekai boom to thank for and a new wave of templates, cliches and obviously other world the so called isekai settings but it obviously worked and was sort of a fresh air it desperately needed especially when academy/battle harems and school settings were becoming stale.

What about eroge on the other hand? Leave out Ero and the only thing waiting in the near future is death.

I think the ero in eroge is just badly done. All you get is a few lousy nude character portraits with a cringeworthy voice track making AHH SCHLURP SHLICK noises. Compare this to hentai, in anime you get much more detail in the sex scene and in manga you don't have to deal with the voices at all. The main strength of eroge is being able to choose which girl you want, as opposed to being decided without your input or just leaving the main character in a shitty no romance harem forever.

The voices are literally why eroge is top tier. It's all about finding your fetishes + the voice actors that click for you.

In my case, facefucking is my #1 fetish, with the main draw being the voice actors (specifically 葵時緒 or 御苑生メイ). Sure it exists in ero anime as well but then you have to listen to the music, sfx and god forbid the dude, or even multiple dudes.

That said I do agree ero in story driven games is shit, but that's mostly because the ero scenes are written because they have to be, as opposed to being written for fapability.

The problem of that VA is not what she voices, but rather that she is SO special, that a lot of characters don't fit her based on how you got to know and used to her.
For me, my first really conscious exposure to her was in Hapymaher, so Saki isn't a problem there. In fact, I liked her there. But there have been several other roles, where the character was just a very different style, and I felt it clashed hard. So far, her best role, to me, is still Saki, and I doubt it'll ever change. It's like this specific style of voice-acting is a big part of the character, which only really works once.

There are other easily recognizable voice actors out there, but I never had this issue with someone else. If I dislike a voice-actor, they don't really have a great role otherwise, or at least not in that particular style. For example, Maki Izumi can actually sound totally fine. She mostly doesn't though, to the point it's one of the few voice-actors I often have to mute.

-Protag is a delinquent at first, but stops being one 5 minutes in.
-Protag is actually not a delinquent, but is considered one because he looks like shit and/or skips school, which he however totally has to for earning money, doing nice things like helping grandmas or whatever.

And, you know, that's a 65 EGS. So chances are that it's awful.
