How it works: when looking at new cards, I listen to the card without reading the text. If I understand what's being said, I suspend the card. Otherwise I add it (spaced 3 days initially). Usually I understand fine just reading the subtitle line. If not I add definitions to words I don't know. Beyond that, during reviews, I just try to listen first then read if needed, or look at the definition. I just never mark a card wrong cause I'm not trying to memorize everything in that drama, just give my comprehension when re-watching it a big boost.

you can learn Japanese
just please, please, spend at least an hour and a half a day doing pleasure reading in Japanese
I don't mean reading along to an audio book or reading a drama transcript, I mean reading LNs or a VN with voiced dialogue but not voiced narration, with no background music or background listening, and don't look up words you already know (except to check readings)

i'd say i can only immediately recognize and understand 30% of the terms i've learned from the deck so far while reading if you take into account that some concepts can't be pinned down with single english equivalents. i still suck at reading but it's way easier for me to read after going through DoJG than before.

also as long as i remember one usage for each grammar point i feel that learning the rest of them will come easier since i'll already have an anchor so to speak. also once i finish the deck and reach maturity on all cards i plan on combing through all the example sentences to make sure i have a decent base.

>> No.20849341

>>20849307
depends where you go. where you went to uni is way more important than anything else in japan. if you go to a shit uni people will think you're a retard and the degree will be worthless, if you go to a good uni then they'll think the opposite (since it's all about how hard it is to actually get in to them). no-one gives a fuck about japanese uni degrees outside japan, except maybe toudai, because everyone knows the system is fucked.

>> No.20849356

also the employment system in japan is mostly based around training people not hiring people with specific knowledge. you can go do a degree in economics and then join an engineering firm and they'll just train you in engineering if they think you have potential because they dont trust the university system to produce ppl who know what they're doing. so going to a good uni is way more important than the actual degree you get.

japan has one of the lowest productivity of a developed economy for a reason.

japs view uni as 4 years of partying but desu they kind of need it. it's the break between "ridiculously intense study + daily 部活" of the school years (which might start early as fuck if your parents are crazy and send you to a 塾 at like 3 y/o) and "12 hours of 過労死 inducing labour for the rest of your life" that comes afterwards. the suicide rate would probably be much higher if they didnt have a chance to relax (and is indeed high at the few universities that are actually difficult like waseda)

>> No.20849415

>>20849379
nah because generally they dont actually even go based on IQ. it's about connections & where you went to school. some of which may be based on IQ due to the entry examination factor, but private schools can just be bought into, for example keio has its own elementary/middle/high and if you go to all 3 you go to keio uni without needing to take the test, but sending your kid all through that is insanely expensive so keio is full of rich dumbasses as well.

i know people who had secured jobs in japan at british universities 4 months before they graduated in the same way japanese people do, they just had to do a lot of skype interviews and shit.

if you want to work in japan 'for a few years' in an actual company you pretty much either need to be a) a programmer (because tech is usually slightly more open to anyone thanks to high demand) or b) be applying in your final year of university and enter a company as a 新卒. companies don't really want to hire random people who aren't just finishing uni. usually this will require N2/N1 as a stated pre-requisite and good enough speaking skills to get through 3-4 interviews entirely in japanese. they'll probably give you a break on keigo because even japs these days aren't that amazing at it anyway, but if you think keigo is hard you probably aren't good enough at speaking to even deal w/ an interview in japanese anyway.

most people have bad accents. that's fine. there's nothing wrong with having a bad accent. but the fact that there's nothing wrong with it doesn't mean it's not bad.

the world isn't perfect, people don't have to lack negative traits to be respectable and hold self-worth.

the idea that once someone is good enough at something to get through life you have to stop calling them bad is what's actually toxic here, it makes it that much more disheartening when people are truly horrible at something and can't even hope of improving.

there's nothing wrong with having the word "bad" attached to something about you, and there's nothing wrong with being honest and calling someone's something bad.

the mindset where you can't say people are bad at things that they're bad at (like speaking without an accent) because they're otherwise respectable is, itself, the toxic mindset. not the mindset where you draw a line between bad and just okay.

>ビルに入った時は、1階に受付だけしか無く何処から2階へ上がるかを考えたが直ぐにやめていた。

I'm reading a web novel and sort of muddling through it, still a beginner and am pretty bad.

I've been trying to figure out how to wrap my head around this sentence, since the resource I'm using translated it completely differently.

What I got:
>When I entered the building, there was nothing indicating that the reception was on the first floor of the building, but I assumed that it was on the first floor and stopped thinking about it.

What my resource got:
>I was wondering at first why the first floor only has a reception desk. I was actually going to ask about how they would go to the second floor, but I refrained.

looking through the grammar resources on the guide, I can lookup だけ and しか separately but だけしか無く何処から* is eluding me. I'm on my 2nd day of trying to decipher it with jisho, rikaichamp and grammar lookup, and I feel even more confused than when I started. Hopefully I'm just being stupid here and this is an easy concept.

* (I don't think this is a morpheme in itself but I want to be as clear as possible because this is the first point where I haven't been able to just intuit my way past the grammar)

Any comments (you can be mean, I'm posting this here because I know I'm a dumbass) are appreciated.

well it was my only point. anime is profit motivated, which necessarily means that they are trying to appeal to the widest number of individuals possible when they make it.

this says absolutely nothing about the quality of the anime itself, merely the fact that it has to try to appeal to a lot of people or else it would not be made. if you don't like that then it's entirely possible to dislike anime entirely (altho there are obviously some exceptions possible).

The reading Japanese to English questions can be solved without knowing any Japanese for the most part since they provide a word bank for your use. English to Japanese force you to use their way of wording things which isn't a natural way to think. It's better just to read what you want.

>Does watching anime with both english and japanese subs help?
Two ways to do this really. Either you let it run and hope to pick up as much as you can or you go sentence by sentence and pause, making an episode last an hour or more in the beginning.

Considering the former: You won't be fast enough to read both Japanese and English at the same time, especially since English is easier for you that means your brain will default to it. It sucks really. If you want to watch at normal speed you have to be content with Japanese subs only and hope to pick out enough words you know.

For going sentence by sentence it helps if you go for each thing only with the Japanese subtitles. If you don't understand what was being said you stop and try to translate it bit by bit. If you still don't get it you briefly check the provided English translation. But be aware that usually the translations are trying to convey the meaning of what was being said in natural sounding English. This will mean that the translation is hardly ever literal enough to help you with individual words. I will only use it if I don't have a clue what the fuck is going on.

For me doing either of these is not a binary choice btw. Some shows I watch without pausing and for some I go with the slow approach of translating. Both have their problems and benefits in the end.

AJATTers are people who listen to incomprehensible white noise-tier japanese for 24 hours per day even while sleeping and """magically learn to understand 90% of everything they watch""" yet will never dare to prove any results. even their leader matt-sama could barely read muramasa and still made mistakes despite rehearsing ahead of time. these are crazy people who want to basically become japanese and think they can achieve that.

you can probably learn enough japanese to play retro games (WITH a dictionary) in under a year, and after that it's just grinding vocabulary. if you want end up wanting to take your studies further than that, you can. but being that video games are for kids you can learn to understand them pretty quick.

usage examples that are very few in number that can be attributed to people who suck? something existing in search results, in small numbers, doesn't make it correct nor does it mean it sounds natural. you can google something like "it's to difficult", get thousands of results, despite it being objectively wrong.

you've been trying to create an unfalsifiable claim, where anything that would speak against it is not allowed because reasons, out of the fear of being wrong. the only thing that matters is what you say despite offering no concrete proof for your claims, despite your dubious skills in japanese.

You have synapses in your brain that have to grow nihongo. Learning a word in srs form is just a few dendrites/vines spanning across making these long connections, but you need immersion to grow the forest. natives can't suck.
they are incapable of sucking.
anything that several natives decide to utter without sarcasm or jest, uttered the way they intended to utter it, meaning what they intended to mean, is right, especially if people who say that phrase are connected by a demographic.
if you disagree with this you're objectively wrong and you will never learn to produce truly natural japanese.

A lot of people latch onto the jouyou figure of 2,000-some kanji but in reality Japanese people easily end up knowing 3,000+ kanji, even around 4,000. Once you reach a certain level of knowledge, new kanji kind of become like new vocabulary. Learning a kanji like 齷 is equivalent in English to recrudescent or propinquity. You just see it, look it up, and bam you know it. Sure, you might forget it, but still - it adds up.
