About 1990 when those university students were born, boku was a pronoun for nerds, so it's natural that they didn't use it themselves and the parents didn't let them. About 1995 when those elementary school pupils were born, boku's dignity started to be restored, part of them use it themselves. And now, 10 years after this survey, boku is much more natural and neutral, so use boku. Your impression of boku is out of date. When I said this before, no one trusted me, but this time this survey backs me up. You can't go wrong with boku.

I'm not sold on this from a technical perspective. It's not completely wrong and it has some points, but I do believe that what we encounter as our wake consciousness really does think in language and there are other separate entities that think more in pictures, feelings and such.

However the main point still holds, as long as you are basically translating everything in your head you can't get to a more fluent state. I'm not sure though, if it's really possible to influence this. At least not at an early stage, where you really have to pay attention to at least understand a little bit out of all that gibberish.

Although I personally prioritize listening above everything else, there are still very good reasons to go with reading first. The most obvious one is that almost all of the approved learning resources focus on reading. However it's still imperative that you focus on the content you enjoy the most. So if you don't plan on reading much japanese, don't overdo reading practice and only do what you need to be able to use the textbooks. You will learn quite a lot already from things like Tae Kim and Genki alone.

No I don't. Learning Japanese is a hobby and not a career. Whoever is learning Japanese for the sole purpose of a career in Japan is delusional. >use Anki for new words
>use RTK for all 3000 Kanji
>use textbooks until you have reached the advanced level

If you would have followed this simple guide, you would have enough knowledge to know how to progress further. It's a shit way, but it's sadly the best.

After this you should know
>all Kanji
>the most important grammar
>the most important words
>know how to read, write, and think in Japanese
>know a lot about Japan

The only thing you will be lacking is talking, but most textbooks have audio, so if you don't learn Japanese with a teacher, you can use the audio cds (or just the files you have "most likely legally" downloaded from the /djt/ linked site).

The only proven better way than the "boring" (I like textbooks though) textbook way is the most expensive way with a paid teacher (which requires not only a teacher, but even they will use textbooks.)

The biggest reason why only this will work is because Japanese is literally a language which has nothing to do with English. Sure, every grammar on the world has some basic rules, and yes, Japanese uses words and grammar like most other languages, but every word and every grammar as well as every written word is completely different.

For example if you learn Spanish as an English speaking person, you are not really learning a new language. You already know the writing system and you have just to update your grammar and words a little. In this case you can just learn the language while using it. If you do this in Japanese (which you did), you are now here realizing you have wasted 1 and a half year of your life. But this is normal if you don't go the TAK (textbook Anki RTK) route until you are at the advanced level.

I wouldn't do Heisig before. It's harder to do it at the start because you have less context and you'll forget shit more easily. If you really want to learn how to write you can always go through RTK later on.

The reason some say to do it at the start is because it gets your brain used to distinguishing kanji that look very similar and makes them look like less of a garbled mess to you, if you that makes sense. But for that purpose alone, Lazy Kanji works just as well. Personally I'd go through like 500 cards in LK and then not worry about kanji study until you're at a point where you want to learn to write by hand.

I mean, things like Wanikani or Duolingo or almost unanimously shat on for their inefficiency and in case of WK milking customers, so why isn't there a similar consensus in regard to these kanji guides.

>>20842394
Oh yeah btw, Heisig wants you to recall from the keyword and KKLC I think the other way around so like wtf, which is the correct way? Man I'm so lost

>> No.20842425

the people who complain about rtk probably all gave up because it was boring to them. it's helpful at getting you to feel very comfortable looking at & distinguishing kanji all day which is what you'll be doing for a long time. the people who dont do it are all sittin around like dumbasses visualising kanji as single pictures like a drawing or smth lmao

I immerse, sentence-mine and daily add 10 new sentence cards, five new kanji following RTK, but I also add the reverse so I get both keyword-kanji and kanji-keyword, 20 cards in total. Yes it will take me some time to get the 3000 into my system but to me it's a good measured approach and together with already immersing it helps solidify them more. I rep cards for about 25-30 min a day, which I think is fair, leaving me with more time for actual immersion.

keyword to kanji is the only thing that makes sense
you don't want to look at a kanji and associate it with an english keyword, that's ridiculous

Ideally you want to go from simple to complex. Unfortunately kanji are made for Chinese bureaucrats and they don't give a shit about foreign language learners. If you learn the simple kanji first the words that accompany them may be complex and rare. If you learn the simple words first your kanji order is going to be completely illogical.
So you separate the two. Learn kanji and what they mean first, and then you don't have to worry about them while you're learning words. KKLC is worse because it gives multiple and often overlapping meanings per kanji. Technically more accurate, but far worse for memorisation. You'll get the exact meanings over time as you study vocabulary. The reason it gets pushback is that the "dude just immerse lmao" crowd spent years agonising over kanji and they don't like the idea that a few months of dedicated study is enough to make the whole script a non-issue.
>>20842415
Wanikani is ten times the price of a single textbook, and is deliberately slow to drag more money out of you. Duolingo only kind of works for European languages because they're all more or less the same. Keyword to kanji is better because it doesn't allow cheating. You either know the character or you don't, no "oh it's that one with an extra stroke". If you structure your mnemonics properly this is a tiny amount of extra effort.

>>20842444
it doesn't matter which one you do unless you want to write kanji from memory (in which case keyword to kanji is obv more beneficial). if you just want to be able to recognise kanji the latter works fine & you can just attach what you learn in the future (ie vocab) onto the english keyword+kanji combo that's already embedded in your brain.

well since u dont know any japanese and the only language you know is english you have to allow for some overlap in the beginning or else you will never understand anything. unless you want to go down the route of "just learning everything by osmosis like a baby" type weird shit that takes way longer

the longer you study the less prominent the english shit you know about the kanji will be. i did rtk and i still do reps but i just go based off words/onyomi now and can barely remember the english keyword most of the time even tho i havent changed my cards to remove it.

One way is just do the 500 most common kanji in RTK or KKLC order (skip any not in that group) then learn 2000 words before doing another 500 kanji if you want. There's no optimal way, just a way that works for you.

Alright. 所 means ところ. If you want to figure out what that actually means I recommend you find a Japanese couple to dote over you for a few years, that's how the natives do it. Alternatively you could use a translation into a language you already know like a normal person.

Kanji is not Japanese. Japanese just use kanji in their writing system like a few other languages do. You can learn Kanji in English, then learn how Japanese use Kanji in their language. On not. Up to you really.

what's wrong with "penetrate"? the point isn't to memorise these words, it's a tool that you use to let you learn the kanji. you're not going to be sitting here 2 years later looking at 徹 having learned it properly in japanese and thinking of the english word. your brain just finds it much easier to associate things to things you already understand and have some reference to in your brain. its like if someone just tells you a random fact you're not gonna remember in two weeks but you might remember it better if it's attached to some other concept thats already in your brain

the fact that some words have more straightforward definitions changes literally nothing though? it follows that it would still work.

does anyone think it's worth using the kanji word association tool while going thru RTK so you're always just learning vocab based on kanji you know? or will it just result in too many pointless low-frequency words?
