Weird question, but it's reading cursively in Japanese supposed to be the same as reading in English?
By that I mean reading through the sentence instead of reading each individual kana.
For example, when I see stuff like よろしくお願いします I usually just glance at the sentence and recognize it immediately. But sometimes I trick myself, because it turns out to be a different way to say it, and I just end up reading it wrong.

idk like 7000 words or something but i dont recommend grinding vocab out of context. just use something to help you write quickly (for handwriting recognition) and distinguish similar looking kanji. matt says do lazy kanji which shows you the kanji and you have to recall a meaning of it. i would say do something like that with the addition of copying down the character with proper stroke order for each repetition

KKLC probably has better mnemonics on average but its mnemonic system is overall inferior because it doesn't grant names to every single re-used component. And a benefit of RTK is that it has community mnemonics which destroy KKLC's. But if you're not learning to write then you shouldn't use either.

there's really no reason not to use mnemonics to remember kanji even if you don't use rtk. it's just a useful memory technique that even all the people who take part in competitions like pi memorisation use it because it's effective

I’ve been studying vocabulary and kanji concurrently, and realized that knowing English keywords for kanji wasn’t benefitting me at all. I should have listened to /djt/ from the start and started vocab immediately. Now I’m learning twice as much vocab daily and have more time to immerse and watch anime. This is absolutely the correct choice. If you ever feel like you really need to improve your Kanji you can go through RTK once you speak a bit of Japanese. This meme with doing RTK up front is one of the most widespread bad pieces of advice. It's not the same. Tango is more for vocab. I believe it has around 10k audio vocab in n+1 sentences and it's presumably way better than those core decks since they are pretty much completely all over and not real n+1. They audio is freely available on the internet, but nuke will only share the decks if you show him an order confirmation of the books. I completely understand him and it's probably also better for legal reasons. However I have a hard time ordering the books since nobody (especially not amazon) likes sending stuff to my country.

I get your point, but mining isn't that easy. I absolutely need audio for every sentence and I wan't the translation to be as accurate as possible. Also I would like to have at least some kind of n+1 increasing difficulty, since complrehensible input is way more effective that complete gibberish. I'm doing the core deck and I have a way harder time to learn new words if I don't understand the rest of the sentence as well. Sometimes I even learn random other words from the sentence before I can remember the actual word that should have been learned. It's not completely useless, but I'm clearly wasting a bit of time that way.

My goal is to understand japanese, audio seems the most forward way. If I read it in kana I always make small mistakes or don't get the pitch accent correctly. Also it takes time to getting accustomed to a fluently spoken language. Reading can't help you there at all.

Well I get it that it's often hard and stuff. But when I try to read a sentence word by word and use jisho to translate it, the sentence often makes absolutely no sense at all because you usually can't just translate everything word by word. So I rather have a deck where skilled translators do this for me. If you already have a pretty solid base, mining is great of course. But I think it's not the best way for a complete beginner.

Of corse I'm also watching anime. But I feel like the combination of anime and audio decks is really beneficial. With the decks I learn the sounds of new vocab every day and with anime I see those words in the wild and in different context. If I only watch anime I don't learn as fast, because it's not comprehensible. If I only use text based anki I have a harder time recognizing the words in anime later. I understand what you don't like about this approach.

I have a deck with several hundred words I made myself by dictionary lookups. But I don't really use it, because the words aren't in a sentence and I have no audio. I don't feel like I learn much from using it.

vncore is kind of overrated, it doesn't even have audio or sentences.. it's a nice easy ice breaker to make you feel like you're making good progress but there is a ton of fields in there you should use to add stuff to to make it better. Really the best way is to set up anki-yomi insta card maker correctly. I do the cards in the deck then clone the deck and reverse the info for listening. That way you can relate to it better too instead of a list floating in your brain waiting to get erased by the subconscious if it gets a chance.

for the ppl who don't know how to have fun or need everything told to them here is a lil algorithm to take you from 0 to epic probably more epic than mia's algorithm

stage 0: watch 10k hours of anime without subs (ongoing thruout every stage)

stage 1: rote memorize kana, do core2k in anki, read tae kim basic and essential

stage 2: read 5k pages of manga with furigana looking up words as much as you want. (ongoing/optional) make 40k anki sentence cards

stage 3: read 10k pages of novels/lightnovels/visualnovels

stage 4 (optional): do rtk with japanese prompts.
you basically know how to learn japanese at this point and don't need anyone to tell you what to do. nihongo is yours to explore and enjoy from here on out
