第五次: The fifth
聖杯: Holy grail (you're probably not going to know this beforehand unless you're pretty advanced or a massive 中二)
戦争: war
映像: movie
化: -fication
決定!: is decided!

"The moviefication of the fifth holy grail war has been decided!"

are you doing flashcards or are you talking about actually seeing them in context?
it should be obvious which one it is in context so i hope you're a flashtard, in that case cut it out and read more

anyway, focus on the phonetic part of the kanji when you read
材 contains 才 which is in plenty of words like 天才 and 才能 which should help you remember the reading
朴 contains 卜 which is in much less words, but you can just remember it as "the one that's not 才" here and learn the ぼく reading for it along with some other word like 朴訥

1. if you only know one language you're probably not used to understanding ideas in an abstract way that doesn't rely on that language to verify that you understood it, which can lead to you doing translations of your target language in your head to "make sure you understood it" which is a bad habit
2. forcing yourself to internally monologue in a foreign language before you can speak it is dumb and pointless

If you really think this way then you are just a bunch of crabs in a bucket who are apparently actively learning something for the first time in their lives. Though I agree that arguing SRS to be the end-all-be-all for vocabulary learning to be just as retarded. But everybody learns differently and the best method for one person could easily be the worst for the one sitting next to him. >how is Japanese "full of exceptions"?

Both 取 and 扱 have one onyomi (there is another one for 扱 on jisho but it doesn't seem to be used) so how would you read 取扱?
Another one, how would you read 帰り支度?

It's the first examples that came to my mind but there are thousands like that.
No matter how easy a word seem to be read as I always check to be careful.

It's good you check the readings of new words no one should insult you for that. This incident should teach you though that when reading Japanese books not everything will be in the dictionary or googleable and so in these cases you just gotta feel the nihongo. When you see new kanji compounds like this and it's not obvious from context what the word means, draw on your knowledge of other words using those kanji like 凍る and 眠る and blend the meanings together in your mind and see if it makes sense

this is a straw man. i didn't say you could know how to pronounce them the first time you saw them. i'm just saying that the way they are pronounced is not an exception to a rule.

the pattern being that in nominalised compound verbs the okurigana can be left out for brevity (this happens more often in newspapers than other media for space-saving purposes)

e.g. 取り引き>取引・引き取り>引取・取り扱い>取扱>乗り換え>乗換

etc

anyone who knows these verbs is not going to read 取扱 with onyomi.

the second one is just simple rendaku and follows regular rules for that

Didn't know about that specific rule, even if by intuition when I was reading i think I was applying it.
Anyway that doesn't change the fact that to know how it was read you'd have to know the verb 取り扱い in the first place.

i just finished watching this (2x speed). i had to study all this shit like 2 years ago in uni but i forgot most of it so it was pretty useful to re-solidify all the basics in my mind, and i thought your explanations were clear enough to grasp/good examples.

one thing i'd say is maybe it would be to mention about 旧字体 or 変体仮名 as well when you're talking about being able to read shit from 1000 years ago. grammar alone isn't gonna help you read something like pic related without furigana.

the bit about ら抜き言葉 seemed like a pretty tangential rant though, although obv it requires a lot of the prior info to understand so you can't really just rant about it separately.
