The appeal of FSN is for the audience to feel for Shirou and his dynamic.

His pure idiocy of his impossible dream, his pure love for Saber and his passion towards those are only possible because he's such an idiot. Despite being the weakest in Fate, he had the strongest most unrelenting heart compared to UBW and HF.

UBW contrast his spirit against Archer's. HF puts him on the highway of hell. etc.

Archer's appeal as a character is NOT what we perceive as GAR in general, which is not supposed to be a character trait anyway, it's about their actions that make us gay.

Personality or worldview don't conflict with the medium at all I'm not even sure why you'd think that, there are plenty of non-adult/manly protagonists who have set personalities and worldviews and the VNs work just fine. The context and reasons of how the specific badass moments came make us realize that the character has more to him than we though and is actually quite interesting.

Simple 'OH YEAH' moments of characters don't really make us like them too much.
Hence why we could never like Fate Shirou much at first (if you do not realize how fucked up he actually is as seen in other routes, his actions in Fate have much less significance)

It's easy to disregard Shirou as being weak, stupid and useless overall in Fate route on a glance-through.

But going through UBW and HF, and rereading Fate again would inaudibly shows that Fate!Shirou is in actuality, probably the strongest one of them all.

It's not what's outside, but inside that matters.

Shirou in Fate route had no real shortcuts to the power he desires. He had tracing, but it's not as prevalent as UBW or HF to the core of his story in Fate. In the end, it only meant that Shirou would face greater challenges in the years of his life in Fate route, with slower uptake, less advantages, but with only his unwavering desire of his dream.

Last Episode pretty much summed it up with his UBW and internal monologue. A harsh life he went through, but it was with no regrets as he lived the way of life he promised himself as a child without compromise, despite his Archer-ish UBW.

I still want an UBW wallpaper. A good one.

Each ending showcases something about the different paths and happiness the characters can grasp.
And no ending has been used for a future story as a basis.

And even in a future story that is a proper follow-up, it's more likely that they will reuse the characters and routes a la Melty Blood, instead of a definite ending.

The moral of Last Episode from Shirou's perspective is simple. While he endured a difficult life akin to Archer's, he did not stray from his path as a hero. His memory of his love towards Saber and his youthful passion that chases after his hero of justice life never changed at all for Fate!Shirou even till his old age.

It was by his own power and perseverance that he was able to achieve a single miracle and reach where Saber was. None of that World contract bull.
