Youtube suggested this video to me, so I gave it a look out of curiosity. Turns out he's a Matt follower and is a year into "immersion." However, most of what he talks about in the video are sentence cards and methods for making them. In fact, the yatsu barely talks about compelling content besides mentioning watching tv. I can't help but think he's looking at the trees and missing the forest.... Are all Mattdrones like this?

I have an autism story. I first started learning Japanese in 2011 and my impression was learning kanji was the main hurdle, so I did RTK for like 12 hours a day for a month before learning any kana/grammar/vocab. I think it did give me a big advantage, like a Chinese person starting to learn Japanese or something. If you're a NEET on the spectrum and can handle that kind of mindless grinding then I'd say it's worth it. I also felt the same way after doing it originally for a couple of years, but I think it's hard to understand the advantage it gives you if you have done it yourself. It takes away a large aspect of what makes learning Japanese difficulty. If you haven't done RTK and want to learn a new word you have to memorise new kanji (which you have no mental framework for doing easily), on top of remembering the compound itself, and the pronunciation. If you've done RTK you just have to remember the pronunciation aspect and the rest kind of slots into the memory you already have of the kanji. I think it makes learning Japanese closer to learning a European language.

I know a lot of Japanese language learners in real life and almost none of them are good at kanji except the people who did RTK, and I know some people who have switched and said they wish they had done it from the start.

if you didn't use anki, or if you quit doing your reviews a few months after having gotten all your RTK cards to maturity, eventually you forget your story and the english keyword for most kanji. so you can compare the benefit of having done RTK it to without. the benefits are marginal. you could make an argument that doing kanji to keyword for like 500 kanji is useful but you definitely don't need to do anywhere near 2200.

>I know a lot of Japanese language learners in real life and almost none of them are good at kanji except the people who did RTK
i don't know what you mean by "good at kanji". writing words? it's probably selection bias. these are the people who care the most about learning kanji.

>> No.20723753

>>20723725

I admit that sounds dumb. I mean it just slows down the process of learning if you are constantly encountering kanji that you don't know. You can't just learn new words because you also have to learn the kanji at the same time. There's also nothing stopping someone from doing RTK and simultaneously learning vocab based on what you've learned, which is the method I would suggest. There are scripts that you can use to input a list of kanji and it will output the most common vocab using only those kanji. I think if you went through RTK while doing that it would be the most efficient way to learn.

>> No.20723790

a lot of kanji used in japanese are used so commonly and in so many compounds that memorizing them shouldn't be that hard since it's constant reinforcement. most of the kanji in words that i have to draw into the computer now aren't even in RTK so what is the point?

if you want to write characters from memory from the very beginning like in written correspondence i can see the value of RTK.

but whenever i write kanji i am literally just copying it from the source text into another source, never having to produce from memory.

and when you get past the beginner stage using english keywords to produce kanji seems counter-productive when you can just learn to write out real words you know

>> No.20723791

>>20723741

"good at kanji" means being able to remember the readings for vocab, nor writing.

Saying that there's a marginal benefit to RTK is like saying Chinese people have a marginal benefit over English speakers when learning Japanese. It's actually way more than a marginal benefit to have the kanji firmly in your head. I think people just misunderstand what that benefit is, and think it's something that will make you able to read Japanese. You still have to grind vocab, sentences, etc. It's just a lot easier when you don't have to worry about kanji.

Yeah this is a good point, I'll admit it's probably hard for me to unbiased about RTK. I went through a phase of thinking it was a waste of time to thinking it was actually beneficial for me. Since I did it before learning any other aspect of Japanese it's hard for me to judge. I think that you have to tackle kanji in some holistic manner though, just learning them one by one as you come across them seems very inefficient and unlikely to actually set you up to be able to memorise new ones quickly.

So let's say you work 9 to 6. You get home at 7. Eat and rest a bit until 8. Either study for college or whatever for like half an hour every day, or only study for college when you have exams. Can't help you there.
