I got what both だけ and しか mean and what's the difference between them, but I still cannot fathom ばかり - it sometimes looks very similar to either of those.
I understand the "he does nothing but play games" part, but there's also regular "only" use of it.

DoJG doesn't even give any 'related expressions' comparison for ばかり; it only mentions it in relation to other grammar points under しか pic related

Yea, if you don't limit your study time you'll just do it forever. Depending on what you're studying you can change that time but your brain can only focus so long and then after that you're wasting time. Also once you blow your focus out then you can immerse better because your monitor is weakened (i.e, krashen theory). Hope that helps it helped me a lot. I have a bit of a hard time setting up a good workflow to watch anime and look up new words and save them for later review. Does anyone have any tips? I already tried the following:
>using animelon / daiweeb: it's fine, but the selection is limited. There is no offline option and pulling the words out is a hassle. Also the translation and word detections aren't that good.
>using Voracious: it's actually quite good, but a huge hassle to find good jap subs and the correct video to go with it.
>just watching anime and looking up words with mobile app Takoboto: it's fine and has anki integration, but no audio and it's a hassle to type in words on a fucking phone.

I'm probably asking for too much, but somehow I just feel I need to much time to fiddle with all the tooling and don't have enough time to just learn.

>> No.20693604

watch the anime and if you feel like you just heard a word perfectly but you dont know what it means and you can type it out right way then look it up and see what it means. then rewind a second and relisten and keep watching that's what i've always done. i like to google the word in quotes with the anime name and episode number to make sure im hearing the right word. a lot of times people will type up transcripts of anime and you can get confirmation there. you don't want to mishear something and commit it to memory

yeah thanks, I also kinda feel like this is the best way. If I'm always stopping and trying to translate I feel like I understand less than when I'm just watching and relaxing. I presume it has also to do with the poor auto translations, that don't really make much sense in context. But I'm missing a good dictionary, that lets me save words and export to anki. 1. Watch anime raw, no subs,
2. Make a subs2srs deck of the whole show.
3. "Watch" ep in Anki in "real time", deleting sentences that you know or are too hard,
4. Suspend cards that are "+1" to you.
5. Put cooldown time on yourself when you suspend a card, I have one minute, so I don't stop all the time.
5. Look up your sentences when you're done with an episode to see if they are truly worth archiving.

This works well for me.

Most of the ideas of Low Key Anki are good. Anki's spacing model is actually very bad for language related learning, particularly what it does when you fail cards. You can get 80% of the way to the benefits of Low Key Anki by doing the following things without using any addons:

- Setting the review limit to 9999
- Setting the lapse interval factor to something between 10% and 40% (I recommend 20%)
- Never EVER pressing the Easy or Hard buttons
- Suspending or deleting cards you're 100% certain you'll never forget again (like if you see 犬 with a four month interval, and you read a lot, you can just suspend or delete it.)
- Set your default ease to 130 and your interval modifier to 200%. (I have not tested this. In theory, it should be almost equivalent to making the "Again" button not affect card eases, which is a good change to make.)

Things like this seem like a huge workload to me and I don't plan on watching an episode over and over. I get it and I think it's a good method. But I'm simply not motivated to go to these lengths. I guess it would be nice, if people who actually do this would share though.

Btw. what does +1 actually mean? I hear this all the time and I thought it's having a sentence that introduces only one new word. But I don't understand it in the context of your recommendation. Why would I suspend those?

n+1 sentences are sentences that contain only a single thing that you know very poorly, and the rest you understand at least well enough to get by

that single thing can be a word or grammar pattern or idiom or whatever

a closely related idea is i+1, which is an abstract concept describing what things you can acquire language from easily, and the letter and number don't actually mean anything

you can't copyright algorithms so no. the reason anki doesn't use it is because it's bad and incredibly complex. anki even has a bunch of useless code that doesn't do anything that attempts to block flaws that later supermemo algorithms have, because anki's original author hates the new supermemo algorithms so much.

The 30-60 minutes of work it takes to make an subs2srs deck will get you a full audio-visual-deck of thousands of cards in one go. That's a lot of bang for your buck.

If you don't want to watch it multiple times just skip the first part and don't watch it raw before making a deck, I find it to be great listening practice, and you get to watch it fully animated.
But if it's a hassle then skip it.

By "suspending" them you just put them aside for examination after you're done with the episode, I just used "suspend" because it's a quick way to highlight them in your deck. But then again just deleting the irrelevant cards does the same thing anyway.

The idea is to enjoy the episode and not start and stop, looking things up all the time, it kills the flow of immersing.

they track data related to individual cards rather than just their current interval and "ease", and try to predict when you're actually going to forget them instead of just using an exponential spacing curve.

this leads to weird problems where pressing a "bad" button can give you a larger interval than pressing a "good" button, because the supermemo author has no idea what he's doing and his theory on how memory works is pure bullshit.

spaced repetition isn't this hard. it's never actually going to be good. you just have to show things you know well less often until you know them so well you don't have to see them anymore, and that's exactly what anki does. the only problems with anki's spacing system are in how it handles the event of failing a card, and you can "fix" it by changing the settings e.g. low key anki. I would advice against a translation, you just want the pure Japanese transcript, you translate it yourself by putting the pieces together instead of interpreting another persons version of it, considering how vague and context-heavy Japanese is, translators will have wildly different ways of seeing things.

Since you're working with +1 sentences you're never overwhelmed because you simple delete the ones that are too much to handle at present, when it's time they will pop out at you.

>It is our argument that as Northeast Asian countries are lower on the q index than European countries, yet higher in intelligence, this would assist in explaining the surprisingly poor representation of Northeast Asian countries in terms of original scientific achievement. However, there are a number of alternative explanations that need to be discussed. First, it might be argued that until around World War II the standard of living was significantly lower in Japan than in Western Europe, and this would explain the poor representation of the Japanese in terms of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. However, this raises the question of why the Japanese should have had a lower standard of living if they had a significantly higher average IQ. A parsimonious explanation is that they were less innovative than Europeans due, in part, to lower q. Moreover, since around 1970 or earlier, the Japanese standard of living has equalized with and exceeded that of Western Europe, but even since this time, Japan has lower scientific achievement. The most frequently cited 10 scholars in 21 scientific fields in 2014 (210 in total) include only seven Japanese, while there were 18 British and 12 French scholars (Thomson-Reuter, 2015). Since the Japanese population (126 million) is more than the sum of those of the UK and France (120 million), Japan produces less than one-fourth the number of prominent scholars.

So I'm almost done with Core 6k and because I've taken so many breaks, it has taken me around 1½ years. It's basically the only studying I've done since the summer of 2017. It all felt a bit pointless because many of the words seemed "useless" and I probably wasn't going to learn them without Core 6k at all, but today I actually ended up using a lot of them.

I have a Japanese friend in my country and today we were hanging out, just walking around the city. Because of the things we saw and talked about, I ended up using 電線、蝶、蛾、裁判所、鐘、方向音痴、手ぬぐい、栽培、サボテン、区役所、飛び降りる、大工、透き通る、醜い、噴水、美術館、虹 and even 多肉植物. Probably even more that I've forgotten. Words that I didn't really think were necessary to learn. I mean, I don't go to museums or art galleries. We don't have wards in my country. Do I really need to learn how to say power lines and carpenter? And how often do I need the word 醜い?

But they all made it so much easier to talk. And it was much more enjoyable than when I used to have a very small vocabulary. Even uncommon words have a place in most conversations, and even though they only make up a few percent of all the words used in a conversation, they are usually the most important words. Now of course a few of these words are not in Core 6k, but the idea is the same: They seem useless, but in reality they aren't! So I guess this just gave me a huge motivation boost because it feels like I've made a lot of progress, and it looks like I'm actually improving despite feeling like I've been stuck on a plateau for ages. And I realized that I only felt like I had hit a plateau because I wasn't using my Japanese! I never really got to use all the new words (and grammar!) that I've learned. I had just been studying, so obviously I didn't notice any changes. And remember, we were only hanging out for 4-5 hours! That's a shit ton of "weird words" for such a short amount of time.

So to all you people out there: If you feel like you've hit a plateau, try using your Japanese more. You'll keep hearing words and grammar you've just learned. And as long as you keep learning, you'll get closer to being fluent. You might not feel that way now, but someday, you're going to need the word 回路 or 脱線. Rare words are the most important parts of a conversation or a text, and there are so many of them. But if you just learn enough, you'll start to see them everywhere. You're probably just not noticing how many "rare words" you're not hearing on a daily basis, simply because you haven't learned them yet and don't pick up on them. Trust me, they'll show up soon enough.
