This is what I’m trying to do. I tried just doing anime with Japanese subs, and it was amazing for grammar, context, parsing etc, but for nuancless grammar (esp nouns) it was ridiculously inefficient, and with a vocabulary of like 500, i could only understand like 5% of the sentences without using a dictionary which made it not very leisurely at all.

Yeah, unfortunately I don’t naturally pick up on what’s being said in Japanese and I wind up zoning it out and just reading the subs. So because it does take effort some effort to listen, I might as well do something more effective.
Plus when I DO hear something i+1 the English sub never translates it correctly, ever.
Nigongo no Mori has enough content, and it’s geared at JSL so it’s gentle enough, but not literal babby tier contrived shit, In a couple weeks I’ll see how much (if at all) anki for recognition helped, and in the mean time I’ll be using NnM for watching/ listening.

I’m not against studying, I study all day, what I’m saying is that if getting basic recognition for simple vocabulary first actually prevents using a dictionary every sentence, it’d make watching anime (even) more enjoyable, why shoudnt I try to see if that works or not?
I read a blogpost and a Chinese guy claimed to do anki core (just aiming for vague recognition nothing else) before reading, and said 3k vocabulary was ideal. I’m gonna do nayr’s 5k (has audio, an example sentence, pretty bad sentence translations but has all the dictionary entries as well) and see how often I need to use the dictionary when I try to watch anime after 1k,2k etc cards.

I’ve been watching nihongo no mori for a little while, it’s really comfy hearing a Japanese person’s view on the difference between two similar grammar points, it almost feels like cheating for nuance, but I haven’t been learning new vocab. There’s other ways that it would confound testing Japanese comprehension, but on a metric like dictionary lookups per sentence or minute, I’m not too worried.
I would note the other important resources I’ve used before because although NnM hasn’t taught me new grammar vocab, I have learned grammar from other sources and so another person who didn’t already learn them as well would need to look it up when they came across it in an anime.

I want to start learning Japanese again, but have some questions:

>How long should I study a day?
>Do you think learning Hiragana and Katakana in a week is reasonable? I heard some people say you can do it in less than a week.
>In a year, how much Japanese did you learn?

>> No.20634881

>>20634728
With 4 hours of study a day, living in a Japanese speaking community, you would be passable in speaking, reading and writing well within a year. You should study as long and as often as you can mentally and physically tolerate.

>>How long should I study a day?
It's up to you but I'd recommend at leas an hour
>>Do you think learning Hiragana and Katakana in a week is reasonable? I heard some people say you can do it in less than a week.
I learned hiragana in a week and ignored katakana and just learned as I went
>>In a year, how much Japanese did you learn?
I'm at 3 months in now 1-4 hours per day and I can read NHK easy pretty comfortably. I guess at 1 year I should reach my own goal of being able to play all the nip games in the original language.

>Do you think learning Hiragana and Katakana in a week is reasonable? I heard some people say you can do it in less than a week.
The thing is you don't need to be perfect to move on. To actually read it as fast as the English alphabet you're gonna need more than a single week. Just spend like a day or 2 on it and move on. Just keep the hiragana table somewhere close to you. And learn the katakana somewhere in between.

>In a year, how much Japanese did you learn?
In the first 3 years I learned jack shit, not knowing what I was doing, messing around in anki, constantly giving up and picking it up again. Then I said fuck it and I just started reading what I wanted to read all along but "saved for when I was better at Japanese", then I started seeing massive gains. It's been 7 months or so since that.

tl;dr just read

>> No.20635010

Nah, I just reread if I forgot something.
Making notes is useful though if you're kind of a person that learns well with that method.

Everybody learns a bit differently so take all advice with a grain of salt and try to find what works for you.
Some people can't stand anki reps and rather just look up more words manually while reading, some people like to make their own notes, etc.

>> No.20635020

>>20634999
Things like Kino no tabi and various isekai WNs. In the beginning I would also still read NHK easy during commutes.

>words meant if you didn't know them and learn from there?
Pretty much. You look up stuff you don't know. both grammar and words. But you have to find a balance. If you look up too much it will be slow and painful, if you look up to little you won't learn anything.

I mostly read WNs since it's easy to copy and paste text into a dictionary. You don't have to mess around with OCR tools or text hookers. But that's your choice.

Whether or you make anki cards of those words is your choice. Maybe they help you learn faster or maybe they don't. I don't know. Personally I can't be bothered. The words you need the most are so common you don't need to make cards for them, you'll remember them fast enough just by reading. And uncommon words aren't common enough to waste my time making and reviewing cards. That's the logic I use to justify my laziness. Experiment and do what works for you.

>I'll read Tae Kim then. Did you take notes and what not?
Tae Kim is short and concise. It's basically already in note form. If you want to search back for something you just use the search bar.

hmmmmmmm. I want to say that I like something, and that something also possesses a quality that I want to mention.
In English I could say "I like girls with large breasts".
女子の大きいおっぱいが好きです doesn't really work, because isn't that saying that I like the large breasts of women, and not specifically women that possess/own large breasts?

Is there a particle I should be using for this, or a verb like 備わる in some way maybe?

ok real talk, RTK genuinely took a lot out of me and since then i only read a little bit and haven't even finished a single vn. i've reread a few grammar guides and watched some dolly videos. i've been so lazy that i've only gotten through like 1k word in anki. i think sometime soon i'll force myself to do what i should have done back then and just start reading every day but it's tough because i have to force myself to do it and i have PTSD from forcing myself through RTK.

RTK is no joke. spending multiple, intense hours every day on not learning japanese could have lingering effects on your motivation if you're not disciplined.

Kanji doesn't bother me, neither does grammar. What bothers me is the katakana in between all the kanji, sometimes there's just so much of it that it makes a sentence looks like a scrambled mess which makes you wish there was more kanji.

I'm still starting out so the lack of spacing is confusing as fuck when there's too much Katakana, it's hard to tell where a word ends and when another begins. Ironically enough a lot of beginner shit opts out using kanji which is why it can get confusing.
