For the newest version of Dies Irae (HD Animation Anniversary) how do I access the aspect ratio options in the config exe? They're current grayed out and the game guide doesn't mention anything about not being able to access them.

To be fair, SMT4 is designed in a way that an ambush can absolutely buttfuck you with no chance of retaliation, so save anywhere kind of "makes sense" in that game. Not that it was a particularly stellar design, though.
Then again some games DID manage to maintain tension despite allowing you to save anywhere. For example, being knee deep in a sprawling, half-explored dungeon with little remaining resources and a full inventory and facing the decision to bail out or keep searching for an exit/checkpoint isn't something free save can help you with. It's a matter of execution.

Usually a "resource management" based gameplay shouldn't have saves like that though. You can save all the time, check locations, reload if you get nothing and so on. Many games would also allow you save in a way you can skip encounters. Though SMT4 one-ups this by giving you free revives at encounter place where you can just continue. You get even your stats from before the fight back. Got mana drained? Just die. Free refill.
Think P5. You are starting to have no SP, can't do much anymore. As it is, you need to figure out how to get with that to the next save-room. If you die, you get reset to the last. Being allowed to save everywhere wouldn't change how you still need the next (or last) room to leave, but you can try every battle as much as you want. If escaping isn't chance based, you can try that a lot. And so on and so forth. In fact, this is how the easiest difficulty works. Dying doesn't game over you, you can just retry the battle as much as you want.

Being able to save all the time, or even just almost all the time, works best with each challenge being on the same level. Think of those popular very hard 2d platformers. Segments without saves are fairly short (unless a hard mode or whatever exists), but challenge is heavy. Rpgs can, in theory, work the same, but they are rare. That said, I'd like more game to include some kinda suspend function. If being allowed to save all the time lessens the enjoyment of the game, a suspend function is a great thing.

Been reading Sanoba Witch and I'm well into Meguru's route. I've been disappointed by it though. Everything up to the scene where mc tells her about his power was fine/decent and that scene itself was great but immediately after it has gone to shit and I'm still reading but it has yet to recover.

I mean like why after that scene did they have to play this dumb "how should I talk/act" game. Then maybe this is just a personal issue but the actual confession scene is orchestrated and spectated by everyone else. Then after they are done being happy they decide that it is the best time to do the whole emotion collection thing and smack her with the hammer.

Then everything in the next chapter so far has consisted of Meguru consulting with Nene on fucking everything, it's almost like they are being babied through the whole thing by the club. Even then it is mostly Meguru not saying what she wants and the mc guessing what it is Meguru wants and everything happens to go well they smack her with the hammer or shoot her again. It is almost like they are cattle to their emotion collection.

The only route I liked in SW was Nene's route. It's underwhelming, but Nene is a top tier cutie and MC's friend plotline was fine.

Finished the Chaos route. The game's story is more like an improvement over Brave rather than trying to replicate the older games. The split happens late, like the beginning of chapter 6 and it feels a bit too sudden, considering most of the choices before never really let Zahak or Tia do anything particulary evil. But then it gets pretty good imo because you have 3 chapters to explore the consequences of Tia's decisions. The rest of the heroines either go against her or for different reasons join her which I really liked because I think it was well executed
I'm not sure how many endings are there because the only wiki I could find is incomplete so I'll do the Law route now and then just experiment.

I just recently started getting into VNs, and been really liking the isekai stuff and shit. I'll keep lurking since I'm new af, but if someone could point me in the direction of what I should play that's not complete garbage I'd appreciate it.

I finished Parallelo, it's amazingly good. I'd say it's Lucle's best work for sure, although the style is slightly different from his previous games. It's also the best eroge of 2018, at least from what I've seen.

The matches definitely require some active focus by the reader to follow what's going on, since there aren't CGs of the field as a whole to help you grasp positions and everything, but if you can achieve that they're like really intense and gripping, I was basically unable to stop during a match even when they're like 3 hours long because they're so engaging. Also the characters are all completely amazing, this is really a game where the side characters shine, Lucle goes into their backstory and their motives for playing and their symbolic meaning in the story really well. Like you might think Ryouji-senpai is just a joke villain character at first but he's literally one of my favourite male characters in eroge ever now, that was some god-tier development.

The game deals with a bunch of really great themes, like talent vs hard work, or trusting in your teammates, or taking on your loved ones' dreams, it's not afraid to go really hard and show the harsh reality of things, this is a common theme in Lucle works where he sets up situations where you think "it's just a story so things are bound to work out" and betray those expectations, but it's also super optimistic when appropriate too, it shows how effective determination and perseverance really are. And it also deals with the despair of the losing side really nicely, you always see both sides of the story in full.

It's worth noting the side routes are really short and mostly just moege stuff, make sure you read the true route first to avoid spoilers and don't expect too much from them, they're not bad especially Ria's route has some really moving content but the true route is what the game is really about.

I guess I should also mention the Aokana comparisons, the game is definitely heavily inspired by Aokana for sure, the setting is very similar and it builds on a lot of similar ideas. But it's also very different, the matches being 3v3 rather than 1v1 is very important since Parallelo is so much about teamwork and not letting your teammates down and things like that, and Parallelo has a lot more focus on actual matches across the whole season, whereas Aokana just has the 2 tournaments. They're both good for a lot of the same reasons though, they both have a really large and interesting cast and really exciting matches and really strong themes and ideas, Aokana fans should definitely check this out if they're ok with how depressing Lucle's writing can be at times.

But yeah the game is amazing I completely loved it, can't wait for Lucle's next game.

Grasesta (or any eushully game I tried for that matter) insists on running on integrated graphics even if I change both nvidia and windows default settings. Any fellow laptop top users ever faced this problem?

Yuu's route ended up way better than I expected. Mostly because I expected nothing after common not exactly trying to sell you any heroine but the main one. (and then locks her away... what awesome gamedesign this is)
Will start the second route today. It's going to be worst girl, but who knows. Maybe I get surprised again.

So far:

-Common route that's not too great, mostly because around the middle you get bombarded with rather boring seiyuu stuff that's not very interesting or just too obvious. Now, seiyuu stuff never stops, but it does get better/more enjoyable. This route also doesn't give a shit about any heroine but the main one, making transitions to the other 3 routes awkward. Even more so, because the main girl's route is locked. I doubt anyone would care about those 3 "side" girls, aside for superficial reasons. (i.e. "she sits in a wheelchair" or "I like ponytails") But those reasons would exist from before you even touched the game, so that's not the common route's achievement. The main girl is great though. Maybe I like being called a pig or something deep down. I like pigs actually. Also, sensei app when? Pic related.
Finally, it's also awkward how the story is written. The first three routes are supposed to happen after common at the same time, and yet not really. It's so fucking weird. Why not just a stair-case system? Sure, the stair-case system isn't too friendly for integrated romance, but cutting out all story that is just not relevant for the route feels fucking weird. The club handles three scripts and you conveniently only see how one is handled. And from the name of the final route, it takes place after this period of time, which makes it even more weird. The game just has a shitty and for its story unfitting structure.

-Yuu: Luckily, the route itself still manages to be fun if you simply ignore the awkwardness of how the overall things are connect. The plot progresses incredibly clichéd and you probably won't get surprised. Ever. She can't act romance? Just fall in love, then it works. Yeah, I would've liked to see something a little less overused, but hey. I still take good writing and clichéd plot over terrible writing and interesting plot. And the execution of most scenes was pretty good. The ending felt like it could've done a lot more, but I feel like that's probably coming in the final route. Again, because that seems to happen after the route. Just not really, because protag has to be single. Or something. God it's weird if you don't ignore the overall story.
One complaint though. This is an eroge. Yuu likes eroge. She played nukige. She even says something like that she'd want someone perverted as a partner, so she can maybe try some things she knows from eroge. It never happens. IT NEVER FUCKING HAPPENS. Other than that, I enjoyed this route.

So I've read that you can take cards from the hetare room without being a hetare in Himegari. Figured I'd get some items from the maids. I thought I might be able to grind another one of those stat rising equips I have one of. Yeah. Well. After I had 3 of them dropped within not even 10 minutes I became scared. This is the fourth one, didn't take very long either and happened while I tested after having everything I wanted. I feel like I got either insanely lucky with my drops (I also got some super good ones from lower tier items of other maids), or this room is rigged. If it would be, the wiki would've probably mentioned it though. So.. lucky? Or did everyone just recruit the maids here and never bothered with this?

Honestly, the chance for a maid card is decent and easily scumable (10% or so?), so no need to count that, but then it's a 1/4 for the right maid and 1/3 for the right item for me. My first 5 maids were 4 times the right one and they dropped 3 times the right item. Spooky. Tested a little bit and never even got a single maid drop, I wouldn't be happy about. Coincidence? I have no idea.

No. Other than your pride. Hetare maps usually give big advantages that destroy any fun you may have if you utilize them. That's why you don't use them. Himegari's hetare map however isn't really good. It's easy to pass on the title.
You can get a couple of really cheap healing items that may help a little early, but are kinda whatever. Exp grind is impossible I think. There are some lvl 30ies you can beat with anything, but they don't give exp. Which is actually super weird. Why would fighting something that gives zero benefits make you a hetare? Well. Who knows. Then there's the obligatory boss that kills you.

Other games give you way more though, if you become a hetare.

Himegari's core concept may've been different though, if the lvl30 hetare monsters giving no exp is no bug they never fixed. It's quite nice. There's basically no story events at all, other than random ero scenes, so less headaches. The characters are obviously extremely flat as such, and almost feel like generic units in a way.
That said, it's still Eushully. So it's not exactly a super awesome game. Controls are as shit as always, you'll get annoyed by quite a few design decisions and so on. There are also some gimmick maps which SUCK fucking SUPER HARD. For example one where you have to explore a dungeon while two enemies can't find you. They move randomly. If they ever get a treasure through random movement, it's gone. It's such a horrible design. There's also one where two characters have a "match" with points against each other. Fucking awful, as you have to basically ignore enemies, just so one of them can kill them, and ignore treasure so the other can take them. FUN FUN FUN. The other ones were actually fine though.

Well, outside of the awful gimmick maps, the maps are pretty good. Way better than the awful shit in Amayui at least, where they give you random 30*30 big rooms with enemy reinforcement whirls which is really fun with enemy control leading to door combat against 30 fucking enemies clumping up. Shit like that isn't much in Himegari. There was ONE version of that so far, and it was super lenient in comparison. For one thing, it only opened up after you cleared one part of the dungeon (as in, you spent some turns already), and then reinforcement would stop at a fairly early turn. (18 out of 80, giving you plenty of time to even get the best rank, as you have 32 turns for that) Also it was actually MEANT to be door combat as well, as you didn't need to go in there. The goal was to stop it invading your HQ, while you circle around it to get to the boss/HQ. Crazy. Actually well thought out map designs from Eushully. But yes, that makes the game quite nice, in my opinion. The maps are actually good.

I also already wrote about some things like how great the magic concept in the game is and how powerful retiring is. It makes maps feel way less tedious, as you don't have to worry about getting into dead ends or worry too much about missing hidden stuff or units lagging behind.

You also have your typical ex maps, which are kinda for ng+. You first unlock them when you are around lvl 30 and you CAN try them. The lvl60 enemies and 70 bosses will probably make you stop that pretty fast though. You CAN try them though, which I like.

Is there a program that lets me force stretch a vn but keep in in windowed mode, like an upscaler or something? I'm reading oretsuba right now and fullscreen looks bad but windowed mode is too tiny. Changing the whole screen resolution looks like garbage too. I've tried a few programs but they haven't worked.

I think we all would be happy, if that'd be a thing. With my screen (1080p, 20 inch or so), 800*600 is still fine. Below that however is usually not fine anymore, with the text commonly getting too small.

That said, I don't think it exists. You'd basically need to apply a good scaling algorithm on every frame of your screen, which is more costly than you'd think. It's something the game would need to do itself, so the amount of upscaling gets reduced to "once every image change" and you can keep commonly used stuff in ram. Even that can be costly enough mind you.

Oh yeah, a little add-on: The best way to play these games is to let your screen handle the scaling. Exclusive full-screen or manually changing the resolution of the screen. In my case it actually looks completely fine with 800*600, but that really depends on how well the screen scales, how high the natural resolution is and so on.

It's definitely possible to do it like video upscaling. I even made a test. Upscaling dvd video with my current settings used 20% of my gpu (gtx 1050), just not with full power. (like 60% power?) As such, upscaling a VN in a similar way, just with more frames, would take at least 2.5 times that. I don't know if the upscaling is in any way "intelligent", as in compares frames and only changes what changes or whatever. Toasters won't run that anymore. And toasters are unfortunately the primary market of eroge. Also this is for 1080p. It'll be worse if you wanna go higher.

There's also a problem that a video doesn't have: Delay. When you play a video, it's obvious what's going to happen: Each frame lasts for the same time as it plays back. You know the next frame and when it has to be ready. So you can pre-render what's next. With a VN that's not true. You only know what's the current frame. So you will end up having a delay for each upscaled picture. How high that would be I can't say. Using a good image upscaling program for a single screen can even take more than a second. Some things like the waifu2x scaling algorithm takes even quite long to the point it'd be impossible to run in "real time" on a VN. Add to that the issues with the text upscaling (which you are generally better of not doing as part of a picture), and you have plenty of things that won't be too nice.
