Canon Reimu has just gotten dull after we've been forced to play as her or Marisa in like fifteen fucking games. Also, she has a built-in narrative dead end of "cannot die, because the whole setting would die with her" and that really lowers her potential as a character. What are you going to do with somebody who cannot be threatened?

However, most of the Reimu hate stems from non-canon stuff. Chado and Flipflops portray Reimu as a flat out invincible arrogant ultrabitch without any redeeming qualities.

The problem I have with Tohonifun's Reimu in particular is the absolute bullshit powerlevel Reimu has. It's like the entire former part is made just so that you'll hate Reimu (mocking Cirno until she cries before smashing her headlong into a rocky outcropping, then spending the rest of the manga just glaring at people until they exhaust themselves).

I'm not sure whether I find that worse than the fact that Reimu subsequently manages to fire enough homing amulets that somehow gained shot-blocking powers to outpace Sakuya WHILE she's using time manipulation and Patchouli's hosing the general area with spells at a rate of 3 spellcards in 1 page. She may as well have just flown straight up in the air, and thrown the freaking Sun on the SDM given the impossibility factor of that stunt, but I guess that would've cut into her glaring time.

As for my own views of regular Reimu, I don't count Reimu as one of my favorite characters. In fact, I generally don't like main female characters, because they tend to have very generic personalities. I kind of like regular Reimu for her sort of mordant manner of treating endless threats upon her life, although Marisa's much higher on my list. Reimu's certainly better than the generic pleasant-to-everyone wants-to-be-a-bride-when-she-grows-up female lead that seems to be some kind of hidden Japanese anime mandate, at least.

As for Reimu, the triple threat of Reimu Sue Works (Chado, Flipflops and Aki Eda) are annoying as hell but despite their prevalent status they're more of an exception than a rule. If those three doujin writers are ignored, it becomes harder to hate her - she becomes a generic good-looking main character, little more.

Still, I must say I can't recall a version of Reimu that I would have actually liked. The poverty-stricken, opportunistic Tako version comes the closest.

Because despite earning no money and getting no donations, she still manages to feed herself somehow.

TH10.5: Celestial bitch causes trolls all Gensokyo. Another bitch royal ensues.
TH11: God bitches set up some Raven bitch with nuclear powers, Raven bitch thinks she's it and worries everyone ending with other bitches pushing Reimu to solve it.

Any wonder Reimu fights most youkai she sees on sight? Nothing but trouble, the lot of them. You too Nitori... people think you are sweet but the whole 'attack you so you'll run away' thing doesn't hold.

Let's talk about characters we want to see hurt and why.

Me, I like to see Reimu in pain, despair, poverty, etc. getting the short end of the stick in whatever ways. She has become an insufferable, arrogant little twat who takes success for granted and I yearn to see her knocked down from her lofty perch. As hot as she is, her attitude has made her perhaps my least favorite character and she needs to be punished for that.

I also like to see Alice in similar situations, but for the opposite reason - I like Alice. It's just that the reason I like her is her beautiful suffering and for that reason it must never stop. Every little ray of hope should be just a beginning of a new nightmare to her.

The fact they constantly provoke and fight one another is one of the best parts of Gensokyo. Ultimately we see from the endings that it isn't too personal and the mature youkai will happily have a drink and joke about it afterwards, but for the most part they all just have a natural rivalry. Youkai have always been that way as beings of superstition often born from human feelings.

End of the day, Reimu beats up youkai because she's expected to keep them in line... well, ok she's rather keen to do so sometimes and lax at others, but a fight can always be started because Reimu is the shrine maiden and the youkai are monsters probably up to no good.

Touhou's cast reminds me of a comic by Rumiko Takahashi.

Personally I'm taking a step back and looking these doujins differently lately. Lets face it, all Touhou doujins basically amount to fan fiction, each their own interpretations and ideas on how things may work. Chado takes the extreme, he thinks something would be kind of interesting and works with it. Wriggle vs. SDM is a perfect example of this, it's a 'what if' story taken to it's extremes to have his favourite characters written in new situations.

To take this example to the work about Reimu, you are looking at it with a very narrow scope. Sure, in his works Reimu is for all intents and purposes unstoppable. But the story isn't really about FUCK YEAH, REIMU KICKS ALL YO ASSES, though it could be read that way if you want to, it's about Gensokyo being built with Reimu as a force of nature and the pressures that come with it as Remilia tries to solve what is clearly becoming a problem.

Sure, you can argue he isn't a good writer, his action is too DBZ like and gets really sketchy to the point it's hard to even tell what's going on at times, but to hate it just because he's taken Reimu to that level seems rather narrow-minded to the story he's trying to tell.

Admittedly, I find this harder to do with Aya Kiss, that doujin is pure rage material. Not just one character, but two completely turned on their heads for a cheap yuri doujin. FFFFFFFFF-

I don't hate Reimu so much as I don't care about her much, as expressed by some people. I think that's sort of the point, though.

I've always felt that Reimu has this "Why me?" attitude whenever she's dealing with a predicament. Her position gives her a lot of power and she's trained it to a pretty high level, so petty insults tend to enrage her (understandable); she's also lazy, so I get the feeling she looks for the most simple solution to any problem first, and then goes about systematically getting rid of potential problem sources in order of complexity and threat (with a few unwanted stops here and there).

The bitch is really just a girl who wants to stay at home sweeping steps and drinking tea, but fuck, no, can't do it because everyone is always bothering her about some stupid problem they have.

On the surface she's kinda boring, but it's probably because she has simple, practical reasons for everything she does.
