That sounds like way too few for the level that N2 describes to me, but maybe that's all you need to pass their N2 test.

That said, looking again at the descriptions for the various JLPT levels, I notice that none of them make any mention of dictionary use, so it might be the case that the level described by N2 assumes you will be able to do those things *with the help of a dictionary*. If this is the case, then yes, I'd say N2 level is probably achievable if you're putting in 3 hours of reading & listening per day (though 3 hours is probably the bare minimum and ideally you should try to do more).

Tried to stick to good games here, I can imagine not wanting to read Bradyon Veda despite how difficult / good for learning the text can be

All chuunishit by Light, Nitro +, etc (Tokyo Necro and Kikokugai are obvious choices)
Hanachirasu - https://vndb.org/v430 - Didn't include this in the chart because it's super obvious, but this is written by Muramasa's author and covers similar ground so there's no better prep for Muramasa than it. Also, it's really short (and really good).
Machina Series - https://vndb.org/v568 - These games heavily involve politics, sci-fi, and fight scenes just like Muramasa. (despite appearances, the order at the start is indeed Kikai -> Amatsukaze)
Dungeons and Daimeiwaku - https://vndb.org/v19579 - As expected of Mareni, complex grammar and extensive vocabulary. However, due to brand differences (liar-soft instead of rail-soft), his style is restrained and more accessible. This makes it a better VN to learn than Mareni's full power VNs.
Itsusora - https://vndb.org/v23 - Wild setting and fight scenes, lots of intense text

So basically, just stuff that tackles serious subjects and has good writers. In the end, it's really just a wealth of experience that you'll need, so reading literally anything will but help. Like I have Comyu and Mushi no Me above it on the tier list but honestly they'd be great "prep" for Muramasa too. The key is just reading a lot and reading a variety of things.

Oh, and dabbling in printed novels will be good too, just to expand your horizons. I recommend this web novel not only for being good but because it's particularly well written with flowery prose that will be a good learning experience.

I think hiragana is easier to learn since there's variety in the shapes, but Japanese cannot really function off of a hiragana system alone like Korean can with Hangul due to the fact that Japanese has only a handful of sounds in comparison. Korean's hard because it's a more heavily agglutinative language than Japanese is with even more difficult pronunciations to pull off. Another Pro-Tip: King Sejong the Great, in his infinite wisdom, tried to make the Hangul represent your tongue/mouth in the position of the sound of the character.
N = ㄴ
Tongue curling up to the front of the roof of your mouth.
K/G = ㄱ
Tongue curled at the back of your mouth.

This is why ancient Korean peasants had a literacy rate of some bullshit like 99%, it's simple as fuck.

And everything compounds into groups of characters, typically 2 or 3, but you can get 4 in some cases.
M = ㅁ, B = ㅂ
Oo = ㅜ
Moo = 무, Boo = 부

Etc...

You never have sole character, in cases where you need just a single character you use the "ㅇ" placeholder.
"Ee" (The Korean surname romanized as "Lee") = Placeholder + Ee = 이

I'm going to try Haruhi in order to push myself out of my comfort zone, and Super Robot Wars Alpha. That one should be easier since the only real issue is all the new vocab (in addition to it being a PSX game and thus lookup is slower).
Of course those aren't the only things I'm going to do with my Japanese, but those are two short-ish term goals that will satisfy me.

1. Give up reading it weekly, wait 3 months for the volume scans to get uploaded on nyaa
2. Just read the scanlation despite being in English, higher image quality, get to participate in discussions about it as it releases
3. Anon tells me the secret of how to find raws for new manga chapters, everyone is happy

Hi guys.

I spent the weekend polishing up a old project of mine, and just released it. It's an OCR Japanese dictionary - and while it's not quite as fully featured as OCR Manga Reader, it's much more convenient to use (in my opinion, anyways), and works *everywhere*. The OCR is also sometimes better due user-adjustable binarization levels.

Give it a try and let me know what you think! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.fuwafuwa.kaku

Spoken language and written language always differ, especially in case of Japanese. Furthermore, to differentiate between homophones in speech you rely greatly on context. Even if it's a formal speech full of onyomi-constructed words, these words will be common enough for this specific context. Books lack context so they need kanji.

I dislike the general interface, but there are also serious bugs like this one which was reported the best part of a year ago and remains unfixed:
https://github.com/FooSoft/yomichan/issues/118
(Some other pop-up dictionaries are also effected by this to some extent. I'm not sure about Rikaikun, but RikaiRebuilt I know has this bug. Both RikaiChamp and Nazeka are free from deconjugation errors though, with Nazeka having the best deconjugation ability of any extension.)

Yomichan's dev hasn't fixed any bugs or even issued any updates for the program in over a year now. He doesn't even bother responding to bug reports so it feels like he's given up on maintaining it and it's unlikely that this and other problems will ever be fixed. RikaiRebuilt seems to be in a similar position where, while the dev hasn't vanished and abandoned the program, he doesn't seem to be making any progress on tackling the various bugs it suffers from.

Admittedly, your problem is worse. The faster you get, the harder it is to make meaningful gains. An hour per manga page can be sliced down to thirty minutes a manga page in a week or less depending on the learner, and doing so has fairly concrete steps - looking up unknown words and kanji. But two minutes per LN page is a very low time for a lot of text (assuming a fullish page), and indicates familiarity with every word/kanji already. Getting that down to one minute will take a lot of time and there's no concrete steps for it, you just have to read more and more and more and more until eventually you just naturally get faster. That's a lot harder and will take a lot longer.

If I might offer a little advice, try not to focus on "speedreading". In many ways, speedreading is basically skimming, and it will hurt you both in the sense you comprehend less of the text and in the sense that you actually won't get faster at reading since you're not getting used to processing the text faster, you're getting used to skipping chunks of the sentence. I can understand the urge to get faster but it'll be better if you just read normally, process everything, and let your experience build. At the very least, 2 minutes per page is a good milestone in that you can now read 1 book a day if given enough time. If you stick to reading you'll see exponential gains, I think.

(Judging by the LNs I've read, I read about a page per minute (6 hoursish for a 300-some page book).

You probably would for a short period until they got it.

I agree about the naturally picking stuff up when you’re ready for it, that’s plainly obvious. But in trying to mimic that one natural process it ignores other natural processes. If you realize you don’t know a word or why a part of speech is the way it is (in your native tongue) you’d google it, look it up, think about it, not just go “oh well I just need more input to fix this”

No, with core2k you are learning kanji through vocab. If you do that you don't need to learn them in isolation. You can still spend a few weeks learning radicals after you finish with hiragana and katakana because it might make memorizing vocab easier at the start, though it's not necessary.

There were experiments carried out on mice that proved that while it is theoretically possible to download fake memories into a brain, they quickly dissipated once an incongruity was discovered. The biggest flaw they saw was that the implanted memory was purely locked to visualization; so when they ran associated vocalizations for "danger" or "good" memories, it prompted no reaction in the mice. Also, while machine translation will be decent in our lifetime, the problem is that it will never be able to understand context without human input; that's why something that's very context-light like in English can usually translate well into its sister languages, but trying to do that with Japanese is like fitting a square peg into a round hole.

While it does sound nice to just "know" a language, there's very little demand for it as translators do that job more reliably than someone with no cultural context or background doing the same. In other words: just learn the language and you'll be fine!

A human brain is the physical proof that it is possible to run translation tasks (and much more!) on a 20W machine. Vision alone takes over 30% of your brain space and in many tasks we're nearing "solved problem" status. There is nothing magical about the brain, it is a very complex and mysterious biological device for sure but a device nonetheless.

>>20535461
I really hate the "neural network" word because beyond some initial inspiration (especially convolutional networks which are further inspired by vision neurons layout) deep neural networks are almost entirely divorced from any biological meaning. They're just (for the most part) layers of linear algebra stacked onto each another with non-linear functions (often tanh or sigmoids for natural language processing).

One of the cool things with deep neural networks is they can learn features automatically and essentially build a compact hidden inner representation of data. For machine translation this means in practice you can train an English -> Hidden representation network and a Hidden -> Japanese network, which allows you to get for instance a Finnish to Japanese engine without having extensive Finnish <-> Japanese translated works. The concept of abstracting language text into a universal compact representation should sound familiar to you, that's basically as close to "thinking" as you're going to get...

Some of the challenges right now are handling memory (how far back in the sequence do you have to remember to have relevant context ? If you had a limited memory how do you learn what is important or not for context ? see LSTM and GRU networks for reference) and more subtle structures where the slightest contextual clue can fully change the meaning (sarcasm is especially hard to detect but progress is being made).

Hope that helps explain why I'm confident we'll get there within 20 years! Reminder that 10 years ago self driving cars were science fiction. Sorry for off-topic...

You're not wrong to be skeptical, there is a chance the whole of research gets fucked overnight in a remake of the great AI winter, and it's true researchers are often a bit too optimistic (otherwise most would quit). I like this Bill Gates quote : We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten.

Right now, the consensus is we lack something fundamental to get to General Artificial Intelligence (basically the very poorly defined thing you'd call intelligence). Some people smarter than me like Yann LeCun think it has to do with our poor understanding of unsupervised learning (the ability to infer interesting patterns from blobs of data without examples of a specific thing you're trying to find). Fortunately for most researchers "intelligence" is irrelevant as AI was a buzzword crafted to attract grant money even though it's really computational statistics by now (RIP symbolic AI).

Neural networks are shit at a LOT of tasks and in practice I avoid them as much as I can afford to for various reasons, but the architectures we have right now are also incredibly good at 2 things where they have driven extinct all competing approaches:
>Computer vision
>Natural language processing

In practice in most computer vision tasks you can think of (including and especially all of medical imaging), deep neural networks are now on par or superior to human expert performance. Having worked on vision research I can testify even a retard like me can fire up PyTorch and get something impressive done in an afternoon provided I have data, which is why humans have stopped being a relevant benchmark in research for a few years now.

Natural language is a bit tougher for now. Some tasks we've gotten fairly good at (sentiment analysis, image captioning) others are still very rough (text generation). Translation is somewhere in the middle, with performance depending on the type of text. People like to shit on Google Translate (which isn't even state of the art) but you can't deny it has improved significantly over the past few years, now you can translate a news article and get mostly intelligible text. I can't say for sure we'll have great translation bots in 20 years but I consider it a relatively safe bet considering what we know right now.
