Even people who draw highly stylized art have some fundamentals behind them. ZUN seems like he never learned any. No illustrator with decent figure drawing knowledge would have made the mistake of Satori's t-rex arms. ZUN art has a cute style, but don't look at it too closely or you'll hurt your bones.

Zun isn't technically skilled but his characters have great expressions so I like it.

To add to this, I guess you could say he's a good character designer even if he lacks figure drawing fundamentals. Try making silhouettes out of his designs and you'll see that you're going to recognize them at a glance. Being recognizable as silhouettes is one of the principles in character and pose design. The famous "hair accessories" do a lot of work in this regard, but ZUN uses other elements like wings when disambiguating between similarly clothed/hatted characters like scarlet sisters

There's a hint of him actually considering silhouettes in pose and character design when you remember that the game discs all have the silhouette of the final final boss on their jacket.

Well, the right (Our left) leg isn't egregious, and from the amount of anatomy I've drawn before, it's definitely not incorrect per se, it's very much possible. The bigger problem here is her left leg, for it to be that far to our left her knee would have to be raised, which isn't the case since both feet are joined.

Guess this is why one doesn't apply /ic/ to ZUN, it's like that phrase on studying humour : it's like dissecting a frog, you get to know more about it, but it dies in the process. And now that you pointed out the legs, I'm noticing it in more and more of his drawings. Fuck.

It's not a tiara. It's a headband. This is something 5hat artists have interpreted as a pin for years. A similar thing occurs with Tenshi's hair. Her hair is actually a gradient from dark blue to a slightly lighter blue but artists almost always draw it as solid blue. She's also supposed to have clothes made out of the sky and blue eyes.
-Alphes got the hair gradient but made her eyes red and her clothes solid blue
-Moe got the sky clothes but continued to make her eyes red and hair solid blue
-Aya gets everything wrong with red eyes, solid hair, and solid clothes

Alphes may have gotten it right at the time. You know how ZUN likes to change eye colors. There are also two peaches in the SWR art and one in that card.

You can see it clearly in the other portraits, Alphes tried to incorporate the gradient. Tried. He also has the beginnings of the clothes made of the sky (you can see her back bow with a slight cloud pattern) but he didn't go far enough with it. It's possible that her original eye color was supposed to be red but ZUN changed his mind last minute to blue and that somehow didn't get communicated. Whatever the case, the red eyes stuck among fan artists, even offical guest fan artists.

Do you see the other leaves on Tenshi's hat? The other peach is just in a position where it is covered by the hat. A very early sketch of Tenshi by ZUN had no peaches at all, so you can tell her design changed quite a bit last minute.

I think the main thing to consider is that he's a programmer and musician first, and an illustrator second. It's probable that he didn't learn fundamentals of illustration because that is simply not his profession. To be honest, most programmers usually have way worse artistic skills, and contract all the art out. ZUN prefers to keep everything as a one man project, so that's why it turns out this way.

Most if not all of the hairstyle of any Touhou is easy to draw so long as you get the bangs right. The bangs always give it away. Luckily, most girls have straight fringes, sometimes split down the middle. You can see that 3 outta 5 Sanaes in pic related have straight fringes. It's only when you get to characters like Aya (Three or more pointy bangs over the forehead) or Nue (Absolute fucking mess) that it starts to get a bit weird. Go give it a try, practice making straight hair first and you'll be able to draw just about any 2hu, or draw over magazine ads for IRL shitposting reasons if that's your thing.

ZUN's art ranges from good to passable to derpy but it's a fairly unique style that serves it's purpose.

Also worth noting ZUN's style originates from a much different time in anime style as a whole, and never really evolved to resemble modern anime style even as the Touhou games were released as the more modern anime style became ubiquitous.

ZUN's art style would literally never work with anything other than his fluffy lolita outfits because anything that requires functional proportions would rapidly break down. (clownpiece is seriously derpy)

I think ZUN's actual art is long since irrelevant after being completely drowned in fanart of higher technical quality and modernized design.

I would say ZUN is better than Ryukisihi.
ZUN faces can be ZUN faces at times, but while I enjoy a certain charm to GIANT MITTEN HANDS his art detracts too much for me to fully immerse myself in Higurashi and thus take his story seriously.
Plus, especially in Umineko, his characters are just flat and boring, ZUN at least does shading and gradients.

Both are great character designers though.
Touhou does has the edge though of not being story focused so ZUN art is easier to let slide.

I like the covers of his music collections, as well as Akyu's Untouched Score. I also like his pixel drawings, such as with konngara and her changing facial expressions, and the backgrounds of touhou 1 are pretty cool and otherworldly. I can't find it but my favorite of his is a picture of reimu in the credits of touhou 1

This is one of my favorite doodles. I really wish I had it, I'd frame it up and hang it above my Suika merch.
