Hi! I am new to the doll scene (besides doing the Monster High thing since 2010) and I have just ordered my first "real" doll!
I'm not sure if you could call Pureneemos BDJs, or if the term is exclusively used for larger dolls.
I have wanted this Nozomi Tojo Pureneemo since she came out, and found her for a really decent price.
I really want to get a larger doll eventually, and build a decent size Nozomi Tojo from scratch. I've been looking at Volks USA's website, and am leaning towards the DDH-08 head and the DDdy base body (mostly because of the large bust) for her.
I have experience doing faceups on Monster High dolls so I don't see myself having much of a problem doing one on a larger-scale doll.

Some people use the term BJD for any bigger doll but technically it only applies to dolls that use ball and socket joints. A lot of people use BJD to only refer to strung resin dolls like super dollfies and some of them get mad when people uses the term for other types of dolls.

Listing said wig (the straight one not the ponytail one which is unopened) is used (can tell it needs light brushing. I've been slowly building my customs and I actually used the GSC faceplate maker. I'm in two minds over using them. On one hand, it saves a lot of hassle and they're very cute with a wide variety of expressions. On the other, the face plates don't have defined noses like normal nendos, it like a smooth bump instead, so they look a little out of place against the mature body parts.

So I've been out of the loop for a while, has anyone found a place to get good quality wigs wigs from? I'm looking for a 7-8 inch black hime-cut style wig for my doll, but I've not had good experiences in the past looking for myself - I always seem to get products that aren't the same quality the sample photos imply. Yes. On Azone's sizing 50L means 50cm Obitsu Body with the stock Obitsu L bust.
Easiest way to find cloths that fit on amiami is to just type "50cm" in the search box, that will give you all of Azone's 50cm clothing so you don't have to sift through all their pure neemo and picco neemo clothing. Anything that says it fits 50L should fit but some stuff made for the bigger AZO2 busts might be a little loose.

I've always admired ball-jointed dolls. They're something I've always kind of wanted to get into. Cost isn't really an issue, I have a very well-being job and several other expensive enthusiast hobbies (tea and mechanical keyboards, for a example). But dolls just seem to have such a high barrier of entry from a knowledge perspective. Plus, I'm just a normal dude who doesn't pretend to be a girl on the internet so I don't know fuck about women's clothing or (especially) makeup, and the idea of somehow fucking up an expensive doll part or dealing with the seemingly steep learning curve seems really stressful. If you're just talking about the typical vinyl dolls on this thread they're easy to get into; cost is the main barrier but as you say that doesn't apply to you.

Makeup/faceup can be bought off the shelf or made custom by someone else.
Clothes/wigs, as long as you have the right scale (1/3, 1/4) and bust size, will fit.
I don't know any other technicalities that could make the learning curve "steep". If you have deep pockets you can buy all your problems away.
Little girls play dressup with barbies, it's almost the same thing minus the vinyl stain upkeep and cost.

Well if you wanna DIY everything then by all means. It's extremely time consuming and imo the returns are crap even when you reach a high level of skill where you can sell it for a good amount, but do it if that sounds fulfilling to you and for that reason alone. If you got a lot of time and this sounds fulfilling to you, knock your brains out, there's a lot to be occupied with.

I'm a DIY'er myself but I prefer building race cars/motorcycles and building guns/making ammunition over sewing tiny human clothes so I just buy everything for dolls since the aspect I enjoy about the hobby is dressing them up and looking at cute things.

Probably.
The only thing with clothing is just making sure you buy stuff that fits the doll, which is pretty easy if you buy a popular type like Dollfie Dream. Then just buy stuff you find cute or think looks good. Dark colored clothing can stain vinyl dolls but that's one of the only things you need to be careful about.
Makeup you don't need to worry about unless you want to make your own doll. The face and makeup are painted onto the head and are permanent. You shouldn't use actual makeup on a doll face. So just buy a head with the face already panted and you're set.
As for breaking them most dolls, especially vinyl ones, are more durable than they appear. As long as you're not swinging them around by their limbs or playing with them like some 5 year old playing with action figures you'll be fine.

Most people don't make their own dolls if that's what you're getting at. Most either buy dolls of popular or original characters or buy a basic body and customize it with different wigs, clothing, accessories, and optional body parts.

As other anons have mentioned, you're not expected to do a lot of DIY with 1/3 dolls, you can buy ready made outfits and clothes and doll heads often come with an existing faceup or you can commission someone to make one for you. The customization aspect is one of the biggest draws for me but it's more of finding what clothes, wigs and eyes that fit the particular doll in question best than actually making the items. If you do decide to take the plunge then as someone else for whom the cost isn't really an issue either I'd advise you to focus on just one or maybe two dolls at least at the start, I made the mistake of getting too many in too short amount of time and ended up feeling that I neglected most of them. And also as someone who didn't know a lot about womens clothing etc. the knowledge gap is bridged pretty quickly I found, one way of doing it is to look at the pretty dolls online, find a theme or an outfit you like and try to recreate it. You can find a lot of resources about where to get stuff on various forums or in the FAQ (although it's kinda out of date now). Alternatively ask here and I'm sure someone will know places to get stuff.

I went ahead and got one of the new bodies for Yuzu. It's nice that you can easily take the default mdd hands off of the wrists, but I haven't noticed too much of a difference aside from the wrists and neck being easier to move around.
I'm not sure if I'll even just replace the skeletons for my other dolls unless the individual parts go down in price though, so I guess Yuzu will be a little special for the foreseeable future.

Hey, I'm completely new to dolls and I'm thinking about taking the plunge. I *think* I want a dollfie dream. Still on the fence between standard and mini (a 2-foot-tall doll is actually kinda big, after all), but assuming I go with a standard-sized model, what's the difference between Standard, Sister, and Dynamite? Just the proportions? That seems to be the case, but I figure it'd be good just to clarify. And, is the newer f3 model strictly better, or is there some reason I might want to go for the older frame?

I haven't gone through and done all the math yet, but it seems like self-assembly is a few bucks cheaper than buying a standard model, so I'll probably go that route since I like building things. That said, it also looks like all the heads available on the Volks site are without makeup. Is there are a good place to buy painted heads?

Can you elaborate? Aren't the limited dollfies usually cosplay stuff, like the NieR one they just did? Frankly I don't have too much of an interest in that kind of thing, so it seems like it'd be a waste to spend that much extra on a bunch of clothing and accessories I don't want, just to get a special head. Not to mention that it would probably take months and months just for them to release something I actually like in the first place.

the first point is purely perspective and based on what you're willing and want to do to have a doll that's just right for you. I have no confidence in my ability to do a doll's face up and other customizing features and therefore find limited dolls much more to my liking. Does that mean I like all limited's? However all of my dolls are limited girls, plus one character model. I find it easier to see a limited girl and say "Oh my god, I must have her!" with or without squeeeing involved.
Limited does not have to mean they have to be based on famous characters like Vocaloids, Touhou, or other media. You'll mainly find that with the Dollfie Dreams, but not all Dollfie dreams, regardless of size are character models. You can also get standard models and have them come with the standard face up as a starting point, like I did with my first girl who's model is the MDD Mirai.

DD is ~60cm, DDdy is also ~60cm but has a more curvy body, wider hips etc. DDS is ~50cm but proportions are otherwise very similar to the normal DD body. f3 is supposedly better but if you're buying a character (limited) doll then there's only two ones out there with the f3 body (if you exclude the two DDP ones), Saber Pendragon (DDS f3) and Ruler Jeanne (DD f3). If you're buying a brand new standalone body then you might as well just get a f3 one. For buying prepainted heads your best bet is to look at YJA as the other anon mentioned though if you end up with a character or even a standard doll then they all come with a preexisting faceup. The other alternative is to buy a head and either do the faceup yourself or commission an artist to do it for you.

Don't put the sticky tack or whatever you choose to use around the socket first. Position the eye and check it a few times with pressure still applied until you're happy and then apply whatever holding substance around the edges connecting it to the socket. Repeat the same process with the other one.

Eh, rather than that I'd say find the aesthetic, size, and price range that suits you best. Do you like the obitsu knobbly joints? Are you on a budget? Is super high posability a selling point to you? If so, go for an Obitsu. They have a good variety of sizes on Parabox and cost less than DDs.
Dollfie Dreams have very different looking, less visible joints, and still have good posability. I think they look better, but they cost more. Pic related is just something I have saved, DDS on the left and Obitsu 50 on the right. Just pick what you like!

I preorderd Sharo's doll. This is the first time I buy a doll, I've been collecting stuff for a while and I think owning a doll was the last one I need to cover the full spectrum of what anime/japanese collecting covers.

I didn't do it just to "expand my coverage", almost since the beginning I've always been thinking about buying a doll but the price and always missing preorder dates for the ones I've liked didn't help. I also like Sharo too much and my scale figure expenses will be lower in 2019.

afaik there is a neck joint available specifically for sticking Volks heads on Obitsu bodies. PB40S with a DDH-01 head is a somewhat common combination. Don't know exactly where to get it though.

More body size options available. Volks to my knowledge is 100% exclusive, whereas Obitsu license their bodies to a few different companies who make their own compatible products. Parabox, AP, Azone, etc; so you get a much wider pool of compatible parts. Magnetic feet. A bit smaller (smaller = cuter, this is fact). Less curvaceous body may mean less condescending looks from friends and family? Very cute and endearing.

But an absolute clusterfuck to buy clothing for. That's just reality. Most shops make for Volks as that's where the majority of the customer base is.

I should probably go make one myself out of my current purchase history. It's the absolute worst feeling when you buy something, anticipate it arriving, and go through all the effort of stripping your doll naked only to discover it doesn't fit. Then you end up with a bag full of failures.

Volks owners are lucky. You get everything tailored to fit. Your only concern is bust size which is easy to change to fit a certain piece.

MDD clothes fit PB40 absolutely perfectly though, so my little twins have the biggest wardrobe by far. Anything for "SD" or "DD" is too big. "MSD" is a crapshot.

Don't know if there's any charts since how well clothes fits often depends on if the item in question is tight fitting or not, it's generally hard to know without trying or getting exact measurements. For example, loose fitting DD clothes might fit DDdy but tight fitting clothes will certainly not. Volks outfits all have their own sizing diagram that shows what Volks bodies they will fit though. In general Smart Doll clothes will fit DD and vice versa, also everything that fit DDS will almost universally fit DD (assuming the same bust size). SD16 clothes will often fit DDdy but sometimes not perfectly. I don't have any experience with Obitsu bodies unfortunately.
