From my admittedly limited understanding, I think it's a damned if you do damned if you don't kind of thing.

If you don't speak a lick of Japanese, you're like a super-gaijin and (of course) they'll rip you for that, but I've been told that they have something against people who speak really good Japanese as well, especially if you try to use regional dialects.

Some of them just plain freak out and can't handle it. You're not SUPPOSED to speak the sacred language that only they can understand.

So, I'm hearing "learn adept quality language skills, but act like you have none". For this to produce effective and more importantly, amusing results, we're going to have to redouble our efforts to researching and sharing honestly good sources for developing functional Japanese language skills.
