It's weird how just sitting around reading japanese books you start to hear more spoken words too. I'm also practicing speaking a few hours a day too and I disagree on Krashen that it doesn't help. You are memorizing and melding what you say into your lexicon of comprehension. I mean you shouldn't make it a focus or anything but it helps in a few areas.

of course conscious learning is less desirable

because what you consciously learn has to now go through effectively a filter to have any chance of becoming intuitive knowledge

I find that writing out the character(s) is a lot more useful for memory retention. I tried doing memorization and then visualization, but then I found out that just writing the character while repeating the sound in my head and also vocalizing it goes a longer way. how to actually start learning how to read japanese

step 0: set a consistent schedule to learn the language
step 0.5: know that you cannot make an english analogue for everything and doing so will result in failure
step 1: learn the ganas (make sure to emulate speech)
step 1.5: start with the core anki 2k/6k deck simultaneously (make sure to emulate speech)
step 2: if you can write every single character out without difficulty, you can move onto immersing yourself while keeping up with anki (make sure to emulate speech)
step 2.5: learn the fucking grammar
step 3: start reading elementary school textbooks for japanese students (make sure to emulate speech)
step 3.5: start reading elementary school manga (make sure to emulate speech)
step 4: start listening to newscasts or other sources of japanese that are audible (make sure to emulate speech)
step 4.5: find a japanese buddy to talk to or go find a club (you can stop emulating now)
step 5: realize you've spent 2 - 4 years learning the language and you're at the top of the mountain, proceed to shekel every dime from EOPs

desu memorizing those 100~ characters first and foremost is the smart thing to do since you can figure out everything else verbally with the language without trudging through slowly, plus reading after helps with memorizing the sets

this might piss some people off in the thread but i learned about five every night and did nothing but write out the character, say it and drew it down until it looked right. then the next morning i did a quick review of what i remembered from the previous night by writing out what i remembered. then after i was done with the day, i'd study another set of 5 according to vocal / consonant groups, repeat by adding in the sounds i already knew

this only took a bit more than half a month to do and while i did occasionally forget a character now and then when i got to tackling actual books, it does provide a good base to ease people into the learning the language and working on it without risk of burnout.

Progress report:
Indeed I’ve reduced the tools I need to google, kenkyusha v5, and Daiweeb.
I tried reading LNs first, but it was less fun for reasons that anime aren’t affected by, I made the switch.
With anime I tried a couple things, the first set of methods were watching leisurely with no subs, with j subs only, with both je subs. The clear winner was je subs, it was more fun, the problem was that I often didn’t know when a sub was capturing nuance or when it was localizing poorly, I couldn’t come up with a way to guess which it was long lines containing a lot of unknown words and wound up figuring that the best heuristic is to always assume it was localizing poorly.
The second set of methods were watching scene by scene. Because this was a more interactive method I deciddd to use the popup dictionary, which was far superior to English subs. The methods this time were study a scene then rewatch it, or watch a scene with no subs first then study it. Studying if it first was the absolute best winner. Watching it without subs was adequately satisfying which made actively studying it again a nuisance. On the other hand, studying a scene first then watching it after was extremely satisfying. The mood is the same across a scene so you can basically guess what the characters would be saying, this makes the dictionary usage easier as well as adds a thin layer of intuition. The real treat is after, when you can tell what a character is saying. It doesn’t come from real comprehension, but it does mimic it, and it feels really really really good so I think this may be the method I stick with.
Also, I tried reducing the workload even more by just using a popup dictionary as I go, then rewatch the entire episode without subs, but for me it missed the sweet spot, not enough immediate reward for all that deliberate, active translation, there was less retained fake-comprehension, and rewatching a full episode seemed to get boring 10-15 minutes into it. Gonna continue that scene method for a while and see how it goes. I’ll probably do the j-cat in a few days then again after some time to see how effective this actually is.

Tl;dr:
Used daiweeb and kenkyusha v5 to translate line-by-line for a scene, google anything not explained by the dictionary then rewatch the scene without any subs, was extremely epic.

This is a bit controversial but I don't believe that is the case. I think Japanese often have trouble reading their own language, from what I've heard. And it's only getting worse. Most Japanese can't even write many kanji, the written language is dying out fast. Half of their language is loan words now. Most japs can't even function without english words. Over time, more and more kanji will be phased out / simplified.

Some of it is conjecture, but other parts I know for a fact, such as the fact that less and less Japanese can even write kanji outside of the common ones. And I also know that Japanese often have to look up kanji on their phone, much more often than the average English speaker has to look up English words.

>that argument earlier regarding voiceless vowels
>nobody bringing up the fact that English has them as well

It's only tricky at first because you're not used to placing them at the end of sentences. We have words that do the same, which is why saying something like 二十日 comes more naturally than です.

Mittel in German doesn't only mean medium, it also means "means" (as in, means to an end).
Lebensmittel is exactly such a word that uses "means" instead of "medium", i.e. "Means for living".

>> No.20486730

>>20486695
Using the above example, you don't necessarily pronounce the full "u" in つ from 二十日. Your lips form the shape and you breathe it out partially before you go to the next mora. A good example of this in English would be the word peculiar. We don't say PEE-culiar, we say it somewhat truncated like p'culiar.

Oh I see. I guess the most prominent voiceless vowel that I can think of would be the one in し then? It's often slurred to "sheh" or just straight up "shh".

I guess it's inevitable people would have problems since most of us mostly learn from reading.
