I learn Kanji readings from Vocabulary and i'm at about 1700 words now, but when i get new words i often have to trial and error for 5+ days until the word sticks and i can recognize the Kanji properly. I've done about 100 in RTK so far (i know that's not much) and i was able to remember all the Kanji after the first encounter. Of course the actual difficult Kanji are probably more towards the back end of RTK

That construction only works with a couple words, think of it more as a set phrase with 多く and also 近く and 遠く.
The 連用形 conjugation of these words can sort of work as a noun. Also 古く and 早く, like in 古くから or 早くに.

How did you guys focus on reading when starting out? I find myself reading a couple of sentences then looking at other things. Constantly having to figure out vocabulary is really taking its toll.

Find something compelling. If you have to force yourself to read it then it's not compelling. Nah dawg just dropping the real hot advice which is largely true across this whole language: If you don't have to use something, don't fucking use it. Keeping it simple is 99% of success in reading and speaking Japanese. This applies all sorts of shit like avoiding use of は, pronouns, and other things that are mostly unnecessary with uses that become more apparent the less you rely on them.

Obviously shit gets used but let's be honest 99% of your problems in Japanese are solved by not overthinking, and thinking towards simpler thoughts rather than trying to convey exactly what you mean in English since the languages are largely incompatible.
