Well guys. If you are thinking about going to japan for work, i cant advise it.

1. Work culture here is brutal 12 hour a day affair (not that big of a deal to me)

2. The isolation is real. Its not easy to make friends that you would consider conventionally japanese, the ones willing to meet you are alot more outgoing, more than you even are maybe.

3. Life overall requires more effort. Deal with stuff in japanese. Walk all the time. Everything is more expensive (well almost everything, relative to the amount you get). The apts leak so much air its quite cold.

Etc etc.

I can live with it I just wish i could find more people to hang out with.

So just try to read something anyway while I'm learning the essentials one lesson at a time? Even if news articles, doujins, and the like have a bunch of grammar points I can't make heads or tails of? I'm slowly recognizing words thanks to the Core2k/k deck (their example sentences help but I've still a long ways to go) but again, running into advanced grammar points and possible slang is killing me. Never mind I can't tell if something is a word or someone's name. I don't want to even consider I'm too much of a brainlet to pull this off, is what I'm saying.

A thought occured. I often go back to watching this anime every other month, but English dubbed. I remember some lines but obviously not all of them. Suppose I switch to Japanese vocals and seek out similar subtitles. Would that work as a "test" of sorts? Mulled about doing something similar with manga and CG sets, but not so time consuming. Just wanna fulfill basic comprehension within two years of studying at least a couple of hours per day.

I'd often try to mentally translate the example sentences within the Tae Kim lessons but the result upon scrolling down isn't 1:1 with what I had in my head very often but the "idea" so to speak is accurate. Passable.

>> No.20256643

you dont want to really translate anything and you definitely dont wanna be fuckin with dubs

the reason you want english subs is simply because they put you in the ballpark most of the time for understanding emotions and contexts and of course plenty of concrete things

the whole point is to make what youre listening to comprehensible and not to be translating it or correlating anything but the idea the subs give you to the japanese you hear

>Even if news articles, doujins, and the like have a bunch of grammar points I can't make heads or tails of?
every single semi-confident guess about what is being said slowly develops your intuition for what different shit means or does to a sentence, even if it's only a piece of a bigger puzzle and you can't see the big picture
which includes the one line you spend 5 minutes deciphering, but the lines you spend under a minute on are probably more valuable
having a shallow overall understanding is fine as long as you're making some connections and some guesses and you're not entirely lost
but if you're just picking out single words here and there you probably need to back down to something easier
>>20256622
drilling lines is usually something talked about in terms of improving speech, not comprehension, no opinion on it personally
mental translation should not be used for anything more than the broad strokes, because translation is not one to one, and also because the nuance is always affected even if the translation is good
even then, don't worry about trying to suppress it, but you're probably not getting much out of mental translation so i wouldn't make an activity out of it

Considering the online dictionaries were shit and no hover dictionary, considering the srs tech was shit, considering the content was extremely limited and no japanese subs even, then those actually will do something. Krashner is debunked crackpot. He's right that you need lots of listening practice but he's crazy thinking you have to learn through context. I learn words all of the time through srs that I then understand in media later because I learned the definition. Yes, even with the example sentences I find myself only understanding about half of it or getting extremely liberal from what the "answer" actually says. For example.

I thought it said "It's been a while since I heard his voice". But it's actually...

Not because of actual acting ability but because of bad writing or weird direction. There's something funky that stops East Asians from being able to act worth a damn which is one reason why Americans don't want to watch shows with too many Asian Americans.

Matt understands that memory is subject to all kinds of complex variables such as some things being harder to remember than others and that anki's algorithm can't perfectly predict the point at which you'll forget something. He spoke about this when comparing Anki's algorithim to some newer one used by Supermemo which attempts to take more variables into account. You're probably confusing his oversimplification of the concept to the masses with his understanding of it.

I agree with you on the reading thing though.

All that says is that British actors are "disproportionately" represented. You ignored the important part of the post:
>even if it's true that the British have better actors, the discrepancy pales in comparison to the gap between Japanese and western acting.
The British could comprise 40% of leading roles in high-grossing films while having a fraction of the US population, leaving the rest to Americans. That's a huge gap between Brits and Americans, but watch a typical Dorama and you'll see the disparity between Japs and Americans is so much larger that it's insurmountable. It must be a biological thing considering underrepresentation within the US as well. People seem to agree their acting is garbage.

At least they're good voice actors.

動 stands for 動詞
サ means it's in the サ行
四 means it's 四段

you also see 他 or 自 in the descriptions of verbs, these stand for transitive/intransitive

so for example classical verb 寄す, its conjugations look like this:
寄さ・ない
寄し・て
寄す・から
寄せ・ば
寄せ(命令)

these are classical conjugations, modern verbs are either 一段 or 五段, so you can tell a definition is for a classical verb if it's described as 四段 or 二段

just do ones you don't remember even after the 5th time seeing them

ドが付く just comes across as totally goofy since it's an excerpt of a longer phrase and appears phrased differently fairly often, it's not its own word, like are you going to mine バカがつく out of 丁寧にバカがつくほど or are you just going to figure out what the whole sentence means because you understand the grammar that makes it up

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing. By "everything I see" I didn't mean every variation of something I already know. I just meant that even if it seems obvious that a word is rare I still mine it since the stuff I tend to like is prime wiki dump self-wankery material which skews frequency rates.

Please stop already with this crap. It has been scientifically proven that english subs do nothing and you absolutely have to turn them off if you want to learn anything. You could start out with jap subs at the beginning, but personally I do not recommend it. You mostly only improve reading skills and you can do that faster and better with VN and books.
You guys really need to understand, that your brain will take the easy way out, if you let it. It certainly would be possible to watch with subs and constantly concentrate and force yourself to first listen and then check the subs for consultation. But as soon as you start to chill and simply watch the anime, you loose. This is almost impossible to maintain over longer periods of time. It's like edging when you are on no fap or whatever.

>>20259845
Look I don't even think about a particular study. This is basic neuroscience or even a little psychology at play here. Your brain is constantly filtering out all the nonsense that isn't relevant if you aren't a huge non functioning sperglord.

I know this even from personal experience. I have easily watched 10k hours of anime subbed over the years and I learned maybe 20 words from it that really stand out. I didn't even get a basic idea about sentence structure and all those particles they use in almost any sentence.
Also I have seen numerous people watching languages they wanted to learn with subs in the particualr language they tried to learn and believe me, their listening skills haven't improved even a bit. This is such a waste of time. They could have achieved almost perfect listening comprehension in a few weeks time, instead they watched years of subbed stuff and were basically just reading all the time. As soon as someone on the street asked them even the simplest question, they were completely confused.

You have no idea little padawan. I started watching subbed anime with about 13 and I'm 35 now. I have been a neet for multiple years during this time. But even when I work I watch about 2h of anime a day. So it's easily 15k hours and that's a very cautious guess. Don't judge random people on the internet. Sure I could be lying, but why the fuck should I? I'm just trying to help you guys not wasting your time. Learning a language is work and it kinda sucks, there are no shortcuts. If you wanna watch 10k hours of subbed anime, that is completely fine and will hopefully be a fun experience. It has for me. But don't expect to learn nihingo from this.

>> No.20259943

If you want to learn Japanese, and watch English subbed anime with that objective in mind, you will focus on the Japanese audio either consciously or subconsciously because you believe it is relevant (if you're not an idiot, you understand that the English subs aren't getting the whole picture across ever), and you will acquire some Japanese doing it. The subs work like training wheels, but the core idea is you don't just take the training wheels off and play with them like your average weeaboo. Obviously you won't learn how to ride the bike that way.

No one is trying to tell you that you should know Japanese by now just because you saw a lot of subbed anime when you were a faggot who didn't care about the language. I'm convinced you're still this faggot, since you keep trying to make excuses about your brain "taking the easy way out" when really there is no easy way out, you've just been staring at garbage fan translations for 20 years and have missed pretty much everything relevant you could have picked up if you weren't born retarded.

Sure I already mentioned a couple of posts above, that it can beneficial if you stay mindful and concentrate while watching. I even do this with seasonal anime I want to really understand. But I don't really consider this learning time and if I watch some other childrens anime raw it helps me a lot with my listening skills.

I just wouldn't go around and tell people in all seriousness to watch 10k hours of subbed anime to learn the language. Why? It's such a waste of time. Watching raw isn't that bad, you still have the animation and kinda understand whats going on and as you progress with vocabulary and grammar you start understanding more and more.

Btw. you are right if I had started learning back then, I would be long fluent enough to completely understand every obscure anime on the planet. I was just too lazy and it didn't really seem like worth it. Just recently I decided to finally do it and it's kinda fun, I really think I will go through with this. I watch so many hours of anime, in the end it's stupid not to learn the language.

VN Core 1250 update.

Should you switch to this if you're already using VN Core? No.

- Added audio. Audio is based on the first spelling for that card. Five cards still don't have audio because there was no source for audio of them. They are: 御(お), 者(しゃ), 膣内(ちつない), 肉棒(にくぼう), 祭(さい).
- Lots of definition fixes and typo fixes. Never hurry when you're making something other people might actually use.
- A small number of changes to spellings, a couple of which were typos like こざる vs ござる, but some were just the frequency lists's fault, like 積り vs 積もり.
- Deleted 古(こ) because it was an analysis error and added 予感 to make up for it.
- Moved up a few cards in the frequency listing by incorporating the frequency of other readings/words associated with their spelling.

No such things unless you wish to read things aimed at 5yo, and even then as a beginner there is no such thing as 'Easy'. Besides reading that would be boring.

You'll just have to get comfortable with not understanding certain things. Sure you look things up, but if you spend 5 minutes on a single sentence you're wasting your time.

I had a backlog of books I wanted to read in Japanese, yet I would never read them because I wanted to become better fist so I could understand it. So I kept reading boring stuff and procrastinating on it so my Japanese wasn't improving. So I just said fuck it and started reading those things anyway, suddenly reading everyday was no longer a chore but something I looked forward to, and my Japanese started to improve again. Sure there where sentences and paragraphs I didn't fully understand, but I can always reread it later.

It's really annoying that 'matter' is such a common word. Makes it much harder to ctr+f comments that mention me.

the harder words slowely bubble up to the top and it gets harder as you go. Might have to take some time to really work through the tough ones. Try writing them, adding pictures, etc. You won't regret finally doing them though.
