Your basically testing if what youre saying is actually getting the meaning you want across and more importantly you are getting lots of input back from hopefully a native speaker. From my experience the vocab get easier as you go too. It's really hard at the start because you don't know what any kanji mean. Kanji is reused a lot and sometimes you can the pronoucement and meaning after a while. I'm only 3k vocab in and I figure out new words pretty often already.
