So to bump this thread, here I come with a stupid question
If I wanna go to japan to study japanese, It doesn't matter where, because in every school theacher only speak japanese ? I know is a stupid question , but to put in context. If I speak french, I was thinking "hmm I have to search a school where teacher speak some french to help me" but after researching I understand that the teachers only speak Japanese, Im right ? So thats why I think doesn't matter where study.
Im right?
Im baka?

He did Memrise bullshit for a year, quite for six months, then seems to have switched to Matt's stuff around February this year.

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.

I try to pin it down in a J-J dictionary, since they tend to exhaust all the possible abstract ideas in a word, or at least put them in terms of other abstract ideas but in a way that makes more sense than English. Also look at how people use it by typing it in google with quotes, or just watching 10000 hours of anime.

talking to yourself is essentially just mulling over and preparing how you would phrase thoughts in real conversation, so it's a solid idea

the dogma of "become 100% fluent through reading/listening!" is just armchair language learning theory pushed by djters who learned a lot of what they know by looking it up and having things pointed out to them, then tricked themselves into believing they knew it all from the beginning

it's good if you aren't a retard and picked up on a decent amount yourself but you need to understand your place in this world and avoid giving the retards false hope

Speaking is necessary but talking to your self is pointless. Your basically testing if what youre saying is actually getting the meaning you want across and more importantly you are getting lots of input back from hopefully a native speaker. Phrasing things to your self is pointless when you could just be aquiring actual natvie content. If you speak a lot you will be forced to abstract your thoughts either way in a scenario that actually makes sense. How are you going to learn anything speaking to yourself?

when speaking to yourself the point is not to learn anything new, but to rearrange what's in your head so that it might be more useful in practice

after you take in enough input, you become a good judge of whether or not a phrase is natural and gets its point across, but you will not neccessarily be good at synthesizing such a phrase on your own and in a short period of time

because of this, mulling over ways to phrase things in your free time can improve your ability to come up with what you want to say faster

Writing is essential. The point of RTK is not to recognize a kanji - you can do that by immersing - but to be able to recall it. And this of course trains recognition too. You don't really "know" a kanji if you don't know how to write it.

>> No.20232890

Bullshit

You can learn to write whenever you want, but writing does not advance you towards fluency, which is what you need if you ever hope to put that writing to use.

Also, you will naturally learn how to write some of them just by seeing them enough and making observations on a long enough timeline. If you want to hone the writing skill, you can and should do it LATER, after you've already gotten good at the rest of the language.

If you spend an hour practicing writing Kanji, you're wasting a good hour you could have spent immersing.

You've just gotta look up words and learn how they sound, no real way around it at this point. It'd have been quicker if you'd just done it from the start, but you have the VERY SLIGHT advantage of recognizing them but the HUGE BURDEN of having an English meaning/story attached to it.

日本語の森 uses a very focused mid-range vocab that always works back and around on itself, so if you know just 1 Kanji in a compound or don't know an individual word, they're REALLY great about explaining them without using English.

That said, if your grammar base isn't so hot, you might rely hard on the example sentences to figure out the subtle differences between similar grammars, but it's ok either way.

Whichever ones you largely understand.

The N2 Grammar videos like the one in that screencap are piss easy because ユキ先生 speaks slowly, clearly, and makes a point to go over EVERY part of EVERY sentence to make sure you understand the words and grammar. While I'm not convinced it's really for someone coming straight out of N3, it's up to you to decide.

I think ケント先生's videos might be better in a lot of ways, but he is not as thorough. He does a lot of funny and memorable skits/scenes though, which may make up for that if it's more your style. Also he's かっこいい as fuck.

As for higher-end stuff, タケパン先生's videos are EXCELLENT material but she's obnoxious.

Speaking helps you find gaps in your knowledge, it helps your recall speeds, it shows your brain there's another aspect to the words, it activates other regions of your brain for language, your listening will improve and you'll spot vocab better in general. It shouldn't be the focus of your learning but it's definetly helpful.

Neither of them. Both are outdated. And if we're trying to create a new one we can't agree on what should be in it because everyone has his own idea on how to learn a language. Only use them for the resources.

Recommended watchings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5IPArDxO40
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiTsduRreug

But the main points most of us can agree on are
>Learn the hiragana/katakana
>You don't need to be perfect to go to the next step. The only way to really learn it is time anyway.
>Start Tae kims grammar guide
>Read it thoroughly, try to understand it. But don't study it! It's just to get an idea of how Japanese works, afterwards you'll just be using it as a reference.
>Once you're finished start reading
>Lookup stuff you don't know (use the resources in the OP)
>Also practice listening (without English subtitles of course)
>Repeat this daily ad infinitum

Optional steps that may or may not aid you learning Japanese. They should be seen as a supplement to the above
>Doing Remembering The Kanji (RTK)
>Doing a premade vocabulary deck
>Mining your own words/sentences

Some helpful tips/ mindsets
>Read LNs, WNs, internet articles, ect... rather than manga. Looking up stuff is a lot faster since you don't need to use clunky OCR tools and you can just select, copy and paste it into a dictionary. VNs are also good if you can get a text hooker working.
>If what you're doing isn't fun you're just gonna give up eventually. Find something to read that's fun to you (surely you have a backlog of things you want to read, right?).
>Don't spend too long on a single sentence. If you can't figure it out and don't have anyone to ask just move on to the next.
>It's normal to suck at it and not understand certain things. Learn to live with and try to have fun regardless. You'll get it one day as long as you don't give up

Do I need to speak Japanese if I want to live in Japan? (studied Japanese for 4 years but want to quit) Hi everyone! Recently I signed up for the JLPT N3 test which will be officially tested on December the 2nd. I decided to make some practice tests to see if I was capable of passing a N3 test after 4 years of studying almost every single day: I failed every single test I made badly. Not with a couple of points off but with a whole load of points off. I have therefore decided not to take the JLPT N3 test in December as I'd rather lose the money I paid for it instead of also losing the gas money and time I'd otherwise also spend on it. I have taken N5 in the past which I passed, although I must confess I still don't know how I managed to pass that one as I had no clue about what I was doing. Because of this I also realized something else: I don't enjoy studying Japanese anymore. A couple of months ago I decided to hire a private teacher to help me with Japanese, but even with someone helping me every week I can't seem to grasp the language. Pair this with the fact that I don't enjoy studying Japanese anymore and having my hopes crushed by the test results, I'm not sure anymore if I should continue studying the language. The only reason I have kept on studying in the first place is because after I graduate in about a year I was planning on moving to Japan. Although I still want to move to Japan I just can't find the motivation anymore to study the language...Should I continue studying even though I hate it? Or is living in Japan without knowing the language possible?

Knowing how to read doesn't make RTK easier but it can be useful if you want to take advantage of Japanese keywords, however even if you do RTK first you can still transition it into a production-style vocab review deck by replacing the original keywords with Japanese ones later. I've heard from multiple people that it does. If you don't know how to read before doing RTK your long term retention plummets too, which I personally experienced.
>however even if you do RTK first you can still transition it into a production-style vocab review deck by replacing the original keywords with Japanese ones later
I was doing that but the process isn't quick enough to justify the time spent on daily reps. It'd probably have taken another year or more at that pace before my mature retention hit the high 90s. It made sense to just ditch RTK and do it again later when I'm fluent. I'm surprised you thought I hadn't done RTK.

The thing is, learning how to read words is better in the long run than doing RTK because you'll constantly be exposed to kanji and words which will naturally SRS themselves with continued reading. Even if the order you learn them in isn't Heisler-approved, fuck it man, learning 特 before learning 牛・寺 is not gonna cripple your Japanese.

Which is great, because like 1500 or so of the Kanji actually show up most of the time, and you'll get so good at reading those you won't even need to think about them, which leaves you, realistically, with about 1500 you actually need to memorize, and most of those are just Jinmeiyou junk that you'd learn on the spot as necessary anyhow. Even better still, because those other ones are so uncommon/novel, they're usually really easy to remember because they're clearly NOT one of the more common ones.

Anyone who reads more than the 5 NHK EASY articles a day understands what I'm saying here.

tl;dr - read and the Kanji become so easy you won't need to think about them

Lazy kanji is probably easy as fuck so it might be worth the time investment, particularly if you can do 50-100 a day, but word->kanji for a beginner isn't worth it.

>> No.20235578

Soon, Heisig was summoned by the teaching staff of the school. Some staff were perplexed that there was someone at their school who wasn’t actually taking classes.

“They called me in at 3 o’clock, at tea time. There were these six teachers standing there.’We’ve heard that you’ve learned the characters and we want to see if you can really write these things.'” Heisig agreed and they put him in front of a blackboard. They told him to write “inu” (dog), and Heisig explained that he did not know what “inu” meant.

“You mean you have been here for two months and you don’t know the Japanese word for dog?” The Japanese teachers started to mutter among themselves, and Heisig asked the one teacher who spoke English what they were talking about.

“They’re saying you should really come to class. This is inexcusable.”

“No, just give me English words.”

This is the lynchpin of Heisig’s system. Heisig insists that you must learn the characters in your own language first before you start getting tripped up by the different pronunciations of different kanji.

“They said dog, and I wrote dog. They said cat and I wrote cat. Then they started to murmur amongst themselves and explained you’re not supposed to know that one. It’s not on the list.”

After the chalkboard was filled with characters, the teachers buzzed amongst themselves and asked Heisig to come back at 5 o’clock.

“So I went away, thinking it all very strange. I came back. The teachers had determined that I had a photographic memory and that it would only be short term for the characters and that I should come to school and give up studying on my own.”

“I told them that my memory was just like everyone else’s but it’s extremely easy to learn it if you learn it in the right order.”

I don't think that could be a good translation in any context, but I don't know the context so whatever. Either way the english translation of a VN doesn't matter here, it's a grammar guide and it's not doing the job of explaining わけ. He should have just taken a J-J dictionary and paraphrased it, it's a lot more sensible than his weird technical ideas about how it describes "one thing leading to another."

>>20236218
What are you talking about? I'm not saying the line is wrong in Japanese or English, just that it's a bad guide. No clue what you mean by being limited to one sentence or "the rules."

Again I don't know where the example is from and that clearly has nothing to do with the guide itself, because there isn't any context provided by sakubi. Sure it's got の and てる but it's still nihongo and the dictionary explains what わけ does accurately, the guide doesn't.

Putting that kind of example in a guide is not a good idea, because it does not help you think about what the actual grammar means and leads you to think that any sentence formatted the same will have an equivalent in-context meaning.

嫌いな訳じゃない
There's no reason that I don't like it.

^ Can you see why this would be wrong and not helpful? You can rag all you want about it being "made up" and "not real japanese" since I indeed just pulled it out of my ass and am not going to cite a source, but there's no empirical difference between something like this and the example in sakubi.

The explanation is shit. That's what I'm saying.

There's no reason that I don't like it.

^ Does this in any way sit better with you?

I get that "There's no reason classes should be determined by age" is something that makes sense to say in the context of the scene if it was being played out in English but you understand that's not really the point here. The issue is the underlying grammar. There is no noun in the original that refers to a reason for classes to be determined by age, and no structure that implies that such a reason doesn't exist. The sentence *means* something else. This is crucial in a grammar guide, because it's supposed to be teaching you how to rationally extract meaning from pieces of the language so that you can start reading/listening and picking up on the even finer stuff.

It's particularly noticeable when I hit to reveal the answer of a word and I can't even decide whether it I should hit again, hard, good, or easy. Like I can't even remember if I got it and if I didn't I can't remember if it was easy or not.

I think I'm a little japanophil or something.
Whenever I see a Japanese person, I want to run up to them and talk to them and be friends.
I obviously don't do that since that would be fucking strange and I don't want to bother them, but it's what I would like to do.

Not sure maybe this is caused by the fact, that although I live in a big city, my city doesn't really offer much for tourists so no tourists visit us.

I don't want to do a language exchange, I want a Japanese friend.

Why is the japanese writing system so fucking dumb?
I started learning chinese after starting to learn japanese because of a chinese friend who inspired me and chinese is just so much easier to learn because of how consistent it is:
>ALL characters are 1 syllable only
>Out of the most common 2400 characters only 20% have multiple readings
That alone makes it a breeze. I'm actually almost having fun learning to read chinese.
Anyways, sorry. I just wanted to vent because it makes me kind of angry how stupid japs were when they invented their kunyomi/onyomi 1-5 syllables and up to 15 readings per character shit
