According to Arthur Jensen and J. Philippe Rushton the black-white IQ difference is largest on those components of IQ tests that are claimed best to represent the general intelligence factor g.[47]

While this certainly is good advice, it shouldn't really matter. In the end you need to know them all and why not learn them before I encounter them somewhere and need to stop all the horses and look the word up. Btw. a list of distinct words used by some books in english:
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: 2766
Pride and Prejudice: 6424
A Tale of Two Cities: 9877
Oliver Twist: 10419
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court: 10312

Of course you need about 20-40k to be comfy in a language.

if you can't just copy/paste the kanji you can handwrite them on google translate.
yomichan has audio files for lots of words, you can also just mine from anime or other voiced media and record the audio yourself with sharex.
30m-1h of anki is good, but reviewing cards you made yourself with words or sentences you found yourself that you want to learn is a lot better than grinding a premade deck.
i know it's tempting to use a premade deck in the beginning cause it's easier, i did that for a bit too. but trust me, mining is definitely the way to go.

It does. Don't get discouraged and keep on watching.
In the very beginning your brain is just adjusting to the new sounds of the language, it takes a while but once you're past that stage you'll start learning a lot.
You should also look up words that you keep noticing a lot, but don't pause and look up words all the time that's a waste of time.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. It's not that you have a magical ability to learn words and grammar patterns... It's that people can only use the words and grammar patterns they naturally learn, and anything that cannot be learned will be eliminated from the language. It can thus be concluded that language evolution constrains itself to the faculties of the language acquisition device, and to the particular ways in which the natural language learning environment provides a setting for the language acquisition device to function.

Anyone got any recommendations? tsurezure is right around my level so preferably anything like that, I'd like to read other genres but SoL is easy cause common vocab so idm

You might already be doing this, but some tips:
- If your "New cards/day" setting in Anki is "20", only add 20 new cards to your deck every day. This way you should remember where all the words in your deck came from and in what context you saw them which will make them easier to remember. When you let a backlog build up in your mining deck, it essentially becomes a pre-made deck with random ordering.

- At least in the beginning, prefer words which you know you've seen before but can't reliably read and/or remember the meaning of.

- Don't cap your reviews.

Going by the context, the 「~たら」 form sounds more natural for both examples because it doesn’t seem like we’re really focusing on the condition itself. We’re probably more interested in what’s going to happen once we meet the friend or how nice it would be if we had money.

The past conditional is the only type of conditional where the result can be in the past. It may seem strange to have an “if” when the result has already taken place. Indeed, in this usage, there really is no “if”, it’s just a way of expressing surprise at the result of the condition. This has little to do with conditionals but it is explained here because the grammatical structure is the same.

家に帰ったら、誰もいなかった。
When I went home, there was no one there. (unexpected result)

Utada Hikaru is the best singer to learn Japanese from.

>> No.20213769

Listening is easier than reading provided you know vocabulary. You always have to guess readings while reading and even when you're 99% sure about something and right about that 99% of the time, you're still not sure whether you read it correctly, teetering between various onyomi.

>read long new word like a disease name with 8 kanji
>know what it means but you need to guess the readings
vs.
>watch medical show
>doctor says a new disease name
>you know the kanji and the meaning based on what he said

I finished RTK and kept up reviews for 2 months afterwards before realizing just how pointless it was since I still couldn't read Japanese. The 40+ minutes I was spending on daily reviews was not worth the ability to write most of them. I watched raw anime every day for a minimum of 2 hours, but I spent a month doing 3 hours. It was very pointless. I hope nobody else tries it. Matt needs to more strongly caution people against early listening since the vast majority couldn't give a fuck about "perfect accent" or whatever nonsense. Not even most of his followers who thought they cared actually ended up caring. Most of them have started reading against his warnings, like JapanCode or that mixed guy. It's nonsense.

I've been studying Japanese for a long time. I first started studying back in 2003. 15 years later, I'm still studying, and I'm still a beginner. If it's not obvious to you, I'll tell you, I didn't study very much, during those 15 years. I slacked off and eventually quit many times. Sometimes it was really heartbreaking. Well, I'm back at it again, and this time, I think I'm going to stick with it, for good; and the reason why is because I have a new perspective on motivation and discipline. No one really explained discipline to me, and so I didn't really believe in it. I hope that by reading this, you will be able to stick with learning Japanese too.

We become motivated to study Japanese for many reasons. I became motivated by anime, and then later by J-pop, and then later by the guilt and shame of the waste it would be to quit. But none of that was enough. I started slacking off, and then eventually, I was completely off. Then I would have some extremely happy encounter with Japanese language, and suddenly I would be hitting the books and buying apps. Eventually, it got to the point where I would declare that I was quitting. Like some kind of defense mechanism. Motivation is not enough. You will lose your motivation. Motivation is like romance. It's a hot feeling that quickly burns out. But the thing is, it will keep coming back. And each time it does, if you haven't been diligently studying, then you will feel bad. You'll be kicking yourself, wishing you had kept it up. And you'll be ashamed, and embarrassed, thinking about how you're just another loser who talks big but doesn't actually do anything.

So - how can you possibly succeed, if you don't really want to succeed? Actually, I think there's a mistake here. I think there's a misconception in this way of thinking. This is how I thought. I thought: motivation is wanting to succeed. I've lost my motivation, so I must not really want this. But here's the thing - you will want this again. Maybe not for a few days. Maybe not for a few months, even. But then it will hit you again, and you'll be filled with regret. This - I believe - is the trick of discipline: you do something not because you want it now, but because you know you will want it in the future. For me, at least, this was a surprise, because I always thought discipline was just doing something you didn't want to do. It really didn't make any sense to me, because that's just nonsense - nobody does what they don't want to do - ever. Whatever you're doing, it's because you want to do it more than you don't want to do it. But it doesn't have to be that you're wanting it directly, right now.

So next time you're starting to lose your motivation, imagine yourself in the future, and be motivated by that terrible feeling of regret - and by the alternative feelings of success, deep satisfaction, and tremendous glory.

I hear it explained a lot (at least in stories) where people will describe their name by the kanji, or talk about how fitting a name is (based on the kanji) and otherwise make comments about how the names are written.
And I know in particular a lot of parents like making retarded names with weird kanji because it makes them look special.

Its not like a huge deal, but its a nice thing you got going on the side. Kinda like having a middle name named after someone who saved your dad's life or something.

Kanji study is ok but don't try to argue in favor of RTK, there's so much in that book that's just a fucking horrible idea. Specialized english keywords that half the time don't have anything to do with what the kanji actually means in its common use, pushing learning to write before you have any clue how to read, no vocab exposure, terrible ordering and selection of kanji.
It will do one good thing in exposing you to a lot of kanji but there are better ways to do this. Ideally you learn what they actually mean and how to read them by picking up some vocab along with each new kanji, and no writing until you have the facilities required to come up with long-form Japanese to transfer to a piece of paper.

Why does he even still waste his time with Japanese?

He's said repeatedly that he regrets learning it and would choose not to do it again if he could go back in time. He tells people who don't enjoy learning Japanese (e.g. himself) to stop learning it. He doesn't like the people who speak the language nor the country its associated with, yet his whole life and self-image seem to revolve around it. Now he's trying to reach 'native level' by rote memorizing the pitch accent of some 40,000 words just so he can show off and stick it to those evil native speakers he hates so much for in the past not accepting a Jewish-American who can't speak Japanese and eats his lunch in the toilet as Japanese.

He's even trying to force himself to learn Chinese (which he also doesn't like) just in the hopes that it will make him better at Japanese. There's something seriously wrong with this guy's head.
