I think that they do not use paper money because it is not backed by anything. The only way they'd be using any form of currency would be like using old Japanese coins the same way we use Spanish currency in the American colonies. And even then, the coins themsevles are probably worth nothing but they are tangible hard items that the human village still uses because they don't know anything else. They also probably barter with youkai, no currencies involved.
