Feedback welcome on these, by the way. A lot of people seem to dislike Ixrec's guide so I tried writing my own alternative to his "Alphabets" explanation. I also thought it would be a good idea to have something explaining the basics of Anki, hence the second pastebin.

Let me know if I made any mistakes, or if anything could be improved.

What specifically would you say is wrong with it?

>Anki guide is OK but you should be dissuading people from doing core more. The way you worded it sounds like the general consensus is doing 2000 isolated vocab before reading which is stupid
I was trying to make it as balanced and objective as I could (although some bias inevitably entered into it), though perhaps trying to represent all sides was not the right approach.

>>20178906
I can't really do much with feedback like that. If you think it's that bad, by all means write your own version. Up to now, DJT hasn't had any real in-depth guide regarding writing systems, pronunciation or Anki, which is something I felt ought to be corrected. None of the "anon curated guides" on itazuraneko cover this stuff at all besides Ixrec (which isn't an Anon guide and which nobody seems to have anything good to say about in any case).

The whole kana section feels out of place, I really dislike the pronunciation thingy as it is both completely useless for a beginner and discouraging because it's too much information at once
These guides should focus on presenting the primary aspects of the writing system, not teach kana per se. The kanji section is alright in that regard

I'm not sure what you were going for with these guides by the way, I'm pretty sure all of this information is somewhere on the the neocities guide(s)

>I'm pretty sure all of this information is somewhere on the the neocities guide(s)
It possibly or even probably is, but I don't think it's assembled anywhere all in one place.

I won't post these guides any more myself, though. If people think they're useless and of no help to anyone, I'm happy for them to disappear (though it would be nice if they got backed up on itazuraneko under the anon guides section at least so I could feel like writing them wasn't a complete waste of time 草). If any legit mistakes are reported in this thread, I'll probably fix them, but besides that I guess I'll just sit back and see what becomes of them from here on out. If they're destined to die then so be it.

That's close, but you've changed the format of the sentence so much that it doesn't make sense to even include the word 太腿 in there anymore. Your sentence would be correct if it was 私の顔に座ってください but it seems like you've failed and given up on trying to parse a grammatical structure you haven't tried before, and have fallen back on one that you're somewhat familiar with while trying to shoehorn something else in.

Lots of people recommended HanaHira as my first VN because it's easy and short. I'd have to agree with that.

But holy fucking shit.

I'm about a third of the way through it, and I already want to kill myself.

It's about a mentally retarded and severely autistic student who literally can't do anything right. She can't even eat properly without dropping her food and getting ketchup all over her face. The other characters scold her and tell her to get her shit together all throughout the day, but for some reason, she doesn't pick up on emotions or social cues, so she is still super happy and upbeat and wants to touch boobies. The two loli characters speak like they've got a chew toy stuck in their throat after spending most of their childhood in a helium tank. I don't think I've ever heard such high pitched, distorted and annoying voices before. I could live with it if they at least all spoke like that, but no, of course there's this one super shy and soft spoken girl whose voice is impossible to hear. If I turn up the volume, one of the other characters will inevitably yell "YAAAAAA" way too fucking loud in their stupid autistic loli voice.

I've read about 1400 lines and I'm still not sure what the plot is. Well, four girls attend a school and they are friends, but some want to be more than just friends. There we go. Literally nothing else has happened so far. I'm actually impressed how little content the creators put into that many lines of text. I feel like the story would have had a better plot if the text was replaced by lorem ipsum.

And seriously, there are so many plot holes. In the middle of class, two girls smash their desks together and start yelling and screaming, and the teacher doesn't say anything. In fact, I don't even think I've seen other characters yet. Maybe it's all just in the retarded girls head and she's actually stuck in a mental asylum. In a way, that makes more sense.

The worst part is that there's not even anything to wank to. Come on, just draw a little bob and vagene. Censor it if you have to, I don't care. Surely one of them has a dick too, and that's fine. I'll gladly take it in the ass if it makes this VN better. At least just give me something! It got pretty close at some point, but then it just stopped, left me with a cliffhanger, and went to a new scene.

How do people make it through this shit?! You gotta be more retarded than the retard loli girl for this to be entertaining. You know how some things are so bad that they become entertaining? Yeah, this is so bad that it's way past that point, and now it's just back to being really bad. I knew that I wasn't a big fan og animay and mangos, but I figured that I would at least be able to power through a trash VN for the sake of getting better at Japanese. Now I'm starting to regret even learning Japanese in the first place. If I had never learned Japanese, then at least I would have never put myself through this pain and suffering.

We're being pedantic already so I'm going to have to disagree. This "sit" is not a standard form of "sit," it is being used in a commanding form. If you say that you "sit your ass down," you are not "sitting using your ass," you are making your ass take a seat(i.e. you are steering your ass in such a way as to have it sit down). The Japanese equivalent of this "sit" would be 座らせる, not 座る. I think anon has given up so I guess I'll just write the correct way: 君の太腿を俺の顔に座らせて下さい
Because Anon used で and 座る, and not を座らせる, the accurate English equivalent would be "sit using your ass," not "sit your ass down."

the "using your ass" only doesn't work in english because it's a very stilted construction. i'm not completely convinced that that remains the case in japanese.

All you're really doing is missing out on more nihongo time by using it for english instead, but I'm not sure how relevant that is if you can't comprehend the original anyway no matter how hard you try. I guess it works as training wheels, but make sure you're still trying to understand the Japanese, especially if the English doesn't mesh with your comprehension.

What I'd be worried about is translations are largely complete shit and toss out nuance from the original every chance they get (though it can vary), so I would expect lots of places where it provides no help at all. At least that's been my experience when I tried to reference English translations. Are you sure you're actually getting a whole lot out of reading it in English?

>this is too long for a beginner
That was my worry.

The original name of the guide was "TL;DR Japanese Writing & Pronunciation Guide", but I had to throw away the "TL;DR" part about half-way through when I realised how long it was going to end up being. It really was my goal to keep things short and sweet and make a TL;DR guide that beginners could quickly read and learn all the essentials from, but it turned out that there was just so much to cover that keeping it short was impossible, at least for me. I have a really bad habit of being excessively verbose though so I'm sure someone could do a much better job of keeping it all concise than I did. I did make some contributions to the DJT guide itself at some point, and the maintainer was always able to cut my walls of text in half or better without losing anything important from what I had written.

>pronounced like the "a" in "cap".
>no
The approximate for the Japanese "a" that Wikipedia's Help:IPA/Japanese page had was the "a" in "father", which sounds nothing like the Japanese "a", at least with my accent. The problem here might be that I'm a Northern Britfag who doesn't speak RP or anything even close to it.

>pronounced like the "o" in "story"
>not an ideal example
Couldn't come up with a better one.

>typing section fails to mention less common combinations like ティ or at least how to type lone small kana, which seems to come up regularly here
Yeah, that was a bad oversight on my part. To be honest, by the time I got to the typing section I just wanted to get it over with so I rushed some bits towards the end.

>i think this and maybe other parts of the sentence card overview will irritate people, but i don't do sentences
You're referring to the full sentence bit? Sentence cards are typically an AJATT thing, and the way Khatz, Matt, etc. instruct beginners to use sentence cards in the very beginning has them using full translations of the sentences (either taken from Tae Kim's guide, a textbook like those JLPT Tango books, or from J-E dictionaries like Kenkyusha). I'm aware that the sentence card section is pretty biased, but I did try to give both sides of the argument in spite of my own opinion that they're not a good idea (the biggest problem being the sheer amount of time involved in making and reviewing them compared to the other options).

Anyhow, I don't think I'm going to attempt to fix any of this stuff. The goal was making a quick introductory guide for beginners and I clearly failed in that regard. I don't think the "Japanese Writing & Pronunciation Guide" belongs in the OP given its current length.

I would have used the Anki 6k deck at the same time as I would have started to learn with the textbooks

My biggest mistake was that I thought textbooks and Kanji are not necessary... Now I have to pay for my sins. Your problem is that you think about things too much. Forget the past, forget the future, and just do whatever it is that you want to do right now.

I haven't spoken to anyone outside my immediate family IRL in months (in terms of having an actual conversation, it's been years), but I really don't care. hey /djt/ I have some questions. I've tried doing a jlpt N5 sample and wondered why I got these questions wrong:
弟はへや( )そうじをしました。
1 が
2 を
3 に
4 の
I picked に since it represents where the little brother is. but the answer is の. I assume へやのそうじ means 'cleaning of room'. Also:
私は、日本でたくさん友達が欲しいです。皆さん、( )。
1 学校に毎日行きませんか
2 学校で友達遊びました
3 家に遊びに来てください
4 家で姉と遊びたいです

You said you’re listening is strong, and I’m sure it is. But how strong? Can you follow Trick 100%? Can you follow the Japanese Diet proceedings (www.shugiintv.go.jp) 100%? Can you follow Tiger and Dragon 100%? Can you repeat virtually any 5-15-second-long piece of dialogue you hear, verbatim, after one listening? If not, then, I’m going to go with the input hypothesis here and say that you do still need to listen EVEN MORE.

Canonical example: you watch a commercial once a day, or every other day for several weeks, and then suddenly you can say: “I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO”, even without having tried to memorize it.

What I’m saying is, don’t force the speaking, let it come out naturally as a result of input. That way will require less effort and cause less mistakes. If you want to practice speaking in a “safe” way, start by imitating TV. Say the lines with the people on TV/in movies etc. Copy them, repeat what they say. It’s hard for me to explain, in large part because I don’t know the underlying processes at work, but simply put: if you hear it enough, I mean, really, really, listen to a lot of Japanese, then you will eventually be able to speak it really, really well — you just will. It will take a while, but, yes, more listening will improve your speaking. It’s counterintuitive (“surely I have to practice soccer to get good at soccer!?”) so people are afraid to do it, but it works, I speak here from experience.

Having a crazy fucking idea right now.

Basically, Anki is very time consuming, stressful, and not fun for me. It makes me feel guilty about consuming media when I have reps due and it makes me want to avoid Japanese in general. However I really like the idea of SRS at a high level for faster language gains (priming your brain to learn words during immersion). So I've decided to ALWAYS hit Good no matter if I could remember it or not. This way my review pile shrinks quickly, I don't have to stress over some word I can't get, and my brain still gets primed to learn a word through repeated spaced exposure to it.

Thoughts? I just started tonight and am going to dive into some reading now.

Just turn off new cards for about 4 days and do reviews. You'll be amazed at how stress reducing it is, how much faster everything will go, and far ahead you get. Another thing I started doing is turning off new cards until like my last 50 reviews. New cards are actually fun when they're kept kind of seperate from reviews.

I have been learning hiragana and katakana using tofugu.com and realkana.com to practice. Things are going pretty well in that I can read and say all the hiragana and am half way with the katakana. The problem is I still have no idea what any of it means. No information is given on that. There are even example sentences to practice and I could write out the romaji or just read the hiragana but there is no meaning. At what point do I learn the meaning of the hiragana and katakana and where do I learn it from?

I have also been learning the English meanings of Kanji using the Kanji Tree app but that is all Kanji and not the hiragana.

See, this is exactly why we (people who actually learned the damn language and use it every day) keep telling the Internet noobs to stop spreading that dumb trend where people cram kanji with English meanings without ever looking into a fucking textbook. That’s how you get hilariously stupid questions like this.

Get a fucking text book (Genki is popular). Read the first five pages or so. Question answered.

Stop doing anything else in Japanese until you do that because you’ll only get even worse ideas about how the language doesn’t work and it will take even longer to get these out of your head.

Also stop watching any stupid youtuber who gave you your current method because obviously it doesn’t work.

It sounds to me like you got your priorities wrong. 50-25% of your lifespan goes towards "being sad" and you want to spend the rest 50-75% of your life learning japanese? You should be spending whatever active time you have liberating the rest of your month from depression.
Lets say that you have 448 waking hours a month. 224 hours of those goes towards depression and 224 don't. If you were to spend 224 of those that don't go towards "being a bitch" to get out of depression --> you would have another 224 hours a month to do whatever you want. The difference would be that 224 hours a month you wouldn't feel like shit.
But you already know this, no way you wouldn't. You just want some sympathy and you don't want to solve the problem. You should just kill yourself.

Finished the last chapter of that book today. Tomorrow I'm starting a "Let's Read Japanese" for the drama transcripts for 流星の絆. It's about the same character count as ゼロの使い魔 book 1 (about 300,000 characters) which I count as being 200 pages. For reference, the Japanese translation of Harry Potter book 1 is 600,000 characters and is a bit over 400 page if you don't count chapter title pages so about 1 page for every 1500 characters.

By the way, this has been a fun way to read, even though Jamal-anon would say it's not reading since I'm using audio and yomichan.
