Any video I see of this guy, I click off of it. It's as if he sucks away any interest and focus of the episode's topic and turns it on himself; not even worth sitting through. I don't get that with Begin Japanology and Peter Barakan.

It's NHK's decision to make every other foreigner except for Peter Barakan be all like HI!!!!!!!!! I'M DAVE DAVIDSON!!!! AND TODAY I'M GOING TO TALK TO YOU AS IF YOU WERE A TODDLER!!!!! WOW!!! LOOK AT THIS BENTO!!!! NEAT!!! SO MANY COLORS!!! etc

You can see it and heart it in all of their other programs like Lunch On and Somewhere Street. They really want their tarento to be over-enthusiastic. Matt's been on a few podcasts and when he's just talking not from a script and he's just being himself he's a really chill guy. In his Japanophile episode as well you could see how he was more himself and not the character he plays for Plus One.

A much as it may erk anyone, Matt's performance is just that; a performance.
Matt's persona is very likely written and directed by the NHK.

Being unbiased here...Its probable Matt's personality will change with the roles he takes on if Japanese studios keep hiring him.

I met Peter a couple of years ago. Not sure if he still does meet ups because I know he's had trouble with autistic stalkers but my wife and I just messaged him in Facebook to say thanks for the show, that it's made us look forward to our trip.
He offered to meet us for a drink when we were in town so we did. Lovely guy.

Yeah, it was cool, he told us to come along to one of his club nights. Didn't know what to expect but ended up paying about 4000 yen apiece to watch soul music on YouTube with him and his son, shin.
Felt a little chinked, to be honest, but it did give us more fuel for joking around.
He's kinda a meme in our house just from watching the show and doing skits as him referring to every object we see as having been previously named Edo, or those little digs he has at otaku like "aha some might maybe say, I mean not me certainly, but I imagine one might think at first glance, maybe if you didn't understand the full depth of your appreciation, you might be forgiven for thinking somebody like you who is into these things might be, ah, wasting your life ahaha.. ".
He was interested in the pretty awful shirt I'd bought and was wearing that day, so one of the skits we do a lot is him calling up about something ostensibly mundane, but always bringing the conversation around to just wanting to know where he could buy the shirt.
Anyway, sorry for the blog post, there's literally no other thread in history I could explain this. I'd recommend reaching out if you're headed to Tokyo, or going to one of these club nights, if you don't mind paying 40 quid to watch his youtube playlist.

What kind of shirt was it? I've noticed peter tends to wear a lot of awful shirts and I wonder if he collects them for fun knowing how ugly they are or if he really just has a bad fashion sense.

He told us that he was away to film a Japan ology on running the day after, and months later it showed up on YouTube and the date fitted, so that was neat, we watched it like "I wonder if he's thinking about the shirt".

Pic related, definitely as bad as his usual, but maybe not "left and right half are different colors" bad. a lot of younger people had things like this and wide brimmed hats, very metro. Not usually into that but I just wanted to enjoy being a bit of a ponce since its so safe there.

Of course, they like it like they like any other idol group. People have a favorite waifu in the group or whatever and they spend their parents' retirement fund to go see them on their world tour every year.

Japan has a real metal scene and they're ambivalent towards them. Some like them enough, others want nothing to do with them. Also the guy who runs the group and everything is a giant reverse-weeb. He's a giant self-hating Jap who loves nothing more than to share the stage or collaborate with shit like Korn and Red Hot Chili Peppers but he's yet to really collaborate with any Japanese bands. Not since they became a sucess anyway

I've actually never encountered any decent Jap comedy outside of Otaku culture with the exception of a few funny manzai skits I found on Youtube. I guess the game shows can be funny on the first viewing, but once you've seen one you've seen them all. The novelty of weird Japanese variety shows gets old quick and it starts to feel like Bollywood levels of cheesiness after a while.

How is their written comedy? Outside of manga, do they have any joke books or humorous authors?

>> No.20237086

I'm an uneducated retard, but I think it has to do with the fact that a portion of humor is culturally relative. Laughter is a psychological reaction to something shocking or unexpected, or to someone else's misfortunes. Japan is such a polite and introverted society that the smallest pun or faux-pas or banana peel is enough to make them laugh hysterically.

If you've ever watched a single episode of something like Game Center CX, 90% of the episode is something like this

>Arino: Damn! Those enemies sure are slippery!
>Cameramen and directors and assistant directors and gaffer and boom operator and everyone else in the room: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OH MY GOD HAHAHAHAHAHA THAT IS HYSTERICAL
