Yeah, i think social media is definitely out for me too.
Some of the IP camera streams i watch while unauthenticated are still questionable if the owner intended for them to be publicly available, and the only faster way of getting shit pulled from the internet then posting it on 4chan is posting it on any sort of social media.

Also a guy i used to know posted about unsecured IP cameras a few years back got people not understanding the difference questioning if he was hacking into peoples webcams to spy on them, and later got the cops on him for posting about finding cameras in places he really should have stayed away from.
Not much of this applies to these threads but all it takes is one person misunderstanding things to get into a shitty situation.

Currently rendering a 4 hour timelapse of sunrise and general morning activity at the shrine from a few days ago.

I have been escaping reality by watching IP cameras and streams around the world since 2004, just turns out i enjoy the aesthetics of Japanese countryside more then anything else.
Station cameras are nice because they show a lot of people coming and going.
Now i just need to find a decent quality stream outside a conbini with some vending machines, a shrine and inside a restaurant, preferably with sound.

Not sure why I did this 4.5 hour timelapse, all the fun stuff I saw is lost trying to fit it into a reasonable filesize and length. I might do a 'highlight' of the morning and link to it, there was a few neat things occurring at this time.

In 2005 I took an overnight train from Tokyo to snowy Hokkaido. I was by myself for a whole month in Japan during Christmas time and I was at a very shaky, directionless part of my 20s. The train made its way north, and I became almost meditative. The view was incredible, the food was delicious, and I befriended some of the nicest people. It’s when I really fell in love with Japan and represents, for me, the most personable way to travel. People are usually tired and stressed on an airplane, and cozy and friendly on a train. Just a better time all around, IMO.

You know, I've just realized something. With a little computer vision you could automatically build a highlights reel of the what happens at this station. Speed up the video when there is nothing going on and slow it down when there is something. It would miss minor but sometimes interesting motion like the birds, though.

I am not a regular in these threads, but the views remind me of where I spent my childhood. We had train tracks running through the countryside with regular passenger trains, though they rarely stopped in my small town. The Japanese counterpart looks cleaner and nicer with a lot less war.

I've actually been meaning to do this. Though the stream auto-closes after upwards of 30 minutes(for me via ffmpeg), I mean, I can just have it loop start stop them for 24 hours, switch to another dir, start recording the current day, then append and modify the current version fit 24 hours into a few minutes. I stumbled across an Aizu-Wakamatsu snowing thread a few years ago, and every year I made a point of coming back to the threads since they were so wholesome and comfy. Since then the more I've hung out in these threads, the more I've come to appreciate just how cathartic train and other livecams are. I've also developed a burning desire to a) finally visit Japan now that I've got the money and an excuse to go (friends working out there) and b) to take an overnight sleeper train journey again. Last one was Shanghai to Beijing with a bunch of guys I knew back from my school days. Didn't realise how special the experience was at the time which I deeply regret now. if i had to just riff here, i'd say these are my golden rules for traveling in Japan independently:

1. Prioritize. Make a list of everything you want to do. Rank them from most to least desirable. Then start at the top of the list. If you burn out, you will have at least done the things you really wanted to do most. Aim for two things a day--anything more and honestly you risk getting burned out. Between traveling, food, and the unpredictable weather, overplanning could ruin a trip to Japan real quickly. There will always be opportunities to come back.

2. Make it easy on yourself to get around. Buy a Passmo/Suica when you get here. They cost 500yen. You buy the pass at a standard ticket machine, charge it up with a 10,000yen bill, and you don't have to worry about buying JR or subway tickets while you're here. Nothing worse than walking by foreigners outside of the train gates staring at a map trying to figure out if they need to buy a 240yen ticket or a 310yen ticket to get somewhere. This, as 400 people are rushing around them trying to get home or to work. Just use the pass--you walk to the turnstile, scan it, and go without worrying about how much to pay. These passes work all over the country, and now can be used to buy food, toiletries, and everything else at convenience stories, which, if your Japanese is poor, will be a godsend.

3. Make time to sit still. The rush of the city is enough to overwhelm anyone. Find a nice place to sit down and just sit. Literally this is the best advice I could give. There's so much to be understood and learned about Japan by just sitting and watching people in a smaller neighborhood. Harajuku and Shibuya are largely shitholes IMO, full of tourists. I like to go to smaller areas and just sit and people-watch. My favorite places are smaller neighborhoods in SW Tokyo with great coffeehouses: Wakabayashi, Jiyugaoka, Sakurashinmachi, Gakugeidaigaku. These are urban neighborhoods, with enough to see, but not so crazy that you can't hear your own thoughts. Literally just go to the train station, pick a direction, and start walking. This is how Tokyo will reveal her true self to you. It's not throngs of people, glittering lights, and giant screens--it's largely pic related.

I could go on and on, but it's really about your threshold for crowds, noise, and your language ability.

In my experience, it really depends on the size of the line. Those that run through the big cities will generally be completely cordoned off from you, and those that aren't will just ask you to step back and silently suggest you leave them alone. You have better luck with the more rural lines.

Can confirm, I rode the entirety of the Gono line on the Resort Shirakami, and the entirety of the Akita Nairiku line.

Beautiful scenery with great views of the coast for most of the ride, and views of Mt Iwaki when leaving the Ou line and entering the Gono line. If you do this trip, do your best to get on the Buna train. Buna is the newest train running the Resort Shirakami service. It has amazingly comfy seats, a lounge/bar car, and large observation areas at the front and back of the train. Aoiike and Kumagera do not have the bar/lounge, but do still have nice seats and observation spaces.

Great rural Japan scenery, the line runs through a lot of rice fields and forests, with a mountainous area near the middle just after the line's main depot. When I rode, there were several farms that had rice field art for the people riding the train, pic related. There's also a small park near the station at the Takanosu terminus, that has an old C11 tank locomotive in it.

Thanks for the ideas, I hope to ride on at least one - so far I've only taken short train rides, might post pictures of the conductors cabin I took once I get to my computer. I'm constantly surprised by the retro digital look of these things in Japan. Another thing I noticed is that the conductors carry these pocket watches that were probably synced with the station clock.
Do you think the coastline ones are worth riding in winter too? I've heard Akita is beautiful in winter and I'm really hoping it lives up to the hype.

IIRC the full Aomori-Akita run on the Resort Shirakami takes about 5 hours, and the Akita Nairiku full run takes about 3. On my trip, I had stayed at Odate during the Nebuta festival and then took the Resort Shirakami from Aomori to Noshiro, and stayed at Noshiro for 2 nights. I originally planned to do 3 nights, to give 1 day for seeing Juniko and 1 day for hiking Shirakami-dake, but cut it to one because I didn't think I'd manage the Shirakami-dake hike and I'd need to rent a car to do it. After leaving Noshiro, I took a train to Takanosu and rode the Akita Nairiku line all the way to Kakunodate, where I transferred to the Akita shinkansen to go back to Sendai.

If you can only do one, the Resort Shirakami is the more comfortable and more easily accessible ride, with the Tohoku Shinkansen getting you to one end and the Akita Shinkansen getting you to the other. The Akita Nairiku line is a bit out of the way, but is still accessible by the Akita Shinkansen at one end and a limited express service at the other. Both were beautiful during the summer, and I think they'd be even better in the winter. I do have a lot of love for the Akita Nairiku line though, I really like Japan's small private rail lines and the Akita Nairiku is a really nice one.

Not sure on the cameras, but if I had the kind of time you have I would definitely try to ride some of the restored steam locomotive services they run. SL Ginga and SL Banetsu Monogatari are both in the Miyagi/Akita area. Not taking the time to ride one of those is probably my biggest regret from my trips, along with having to pass on hiking the old Usui pass route to megane bashi.

I'm definitely going to ride the steam locomotive, riding one of those sounds like a dream come true. I took the Shinkansen and disliked it, it felt more like being on an airplane than on a train. It lacked that cozy feeling. It's why I actually like Akita quite a bit, this place is stuck in the past in so many ways that it sometimes feels like it's still pre 2000. The train service from my station to Akita feels like the train hasn't changed in decades - the station itself, Wada station, is in the middle of nowhere.

By the way, I'm interested in your perspective on that - did the Akita/Tohoku area make you feel a weird nostalgia for the 80s/90s? I don't really remember them myself, but the prefecture is like a time capsule which is becoming my impression of Japan in general. I really enjoy that aspect of it, frankly.

This is the unfortunate truth, i no longer share links of IP cameras i find since they all get taken down within a day when posted.
While i have other cameras i have been watching for years by now, seems like a bit more then coincidence with the timing.
Youtube streams seem a bit more resilient, but i sometimes wonder if they are set up properly in regards to laws and regulations and they may run into trouble with that sort of thing when they get too popular and people around start to notice.
I am guessing that's why almost all the Japanese streams with audio disappeared almost at the same time, might be privacy concerns.
I know in some US states recording or transmitting a conversation without both parties consent is considered illegal wiretapping (Gotta love all those open to interpretation "fuzzy" laws), other nations probably have similar regulations in place.

good to see some train enthusiasts around these parts. my favorite japanese train might be the Ibusuki no Tamatebako, it's owned by JR kyushu and it's known for being the one that goes to Nishi-Ooyama station, the southernmost JR train station in the country (Okinawan railways are not owned by JR). And so I've started to play around with 24 hour recordings. And I just noticed the out of place night in the middle... Well it's a thing now. I did have it sped up at twice this speed coming in at a little under 4 minutes. But that and this I feel are to fast... would other Anons enjoy something like this? Also maybe sped down to 10 minutes? I mean... it'll always be "too fast" since it's 24 hours worth of footage...

You need to be able to set high shutter speeds for shinkansen photos and phones often don't have the ability to manually set shutter speed, and won't set that high automatically.

I get to experience 30-36C summers and -10-20C winters. Sometimes it feels like cycles of hell. It is autumn now and the mornings are 0-5C and by mid afternoon it can be 20+ So you can even dress properly if you go out in the morning. Shit is fucked.

It's not that bad if you dress properly, gets really annoying when you have to do physical labor outside though.
Have to dress in multiple layers and perfectly balance putting on and taking off layers so you don't get cold but don't get sweaty either, being sweaty and cold makes things uncomfortable very fast.
Now when it hits -30 things get very interesting, it doesn't feel as cold since it's a dry cold, but it will freeze you in no time at all if you get caught out without proper clothes.
Also have to keep in mind not to touch metal with exposed skin.
It doesn't really snow when it's really cold though, so less need to constantly go shovel snow.
Fortunately it doesn't get that cold here very often.

From Aizuwakamatsu it stops at Aizukawaguchi, at which point I think I'll just have to turn around and ride it back since I'm going farther north after Aizuwakamatsu.

As far as I am aware there is no plan to close the Tadami Line as it is a major scenic line in the region.
But, yes, you would just ride it back to Aizuwakamatsu. It stops at Aizukawaguchi for about half an hour and then goes back.

I took Lake Shore Limited then River Runner from Boston to St. Louis. No food, loud as fuck, shit seats, twelve (yes twelve) hour delay, missed connections, no sleep. Spent 36 hours on a train.
