what does the ではな part of this sentence mean? I've been struggling but I can't find anything concrete.

This is what I have so far:

- usually I'd like to collect my exploded/scattered flesh,

-this body, no, this head ではな。

is it supposed to be short for ではない?
is the で は used to say because of/using (her head) is the topic, with な as an emphasis particle?

I don't post much on /int/ anymore but when I did he didn't come across as arrogant, the opposite really. your average casual bilingual who cant write or think for shit or is otherwise not really interested in really getting shit right is what youre going to find the most

english speaking communities for japanese language are just shit but also like ones for anime and hentai games etc are just complete aids because they dont understand them at all and on the flip side the majority of japanese consumers are actual retards too (shocking i know even japanese people can be retarded just like the westerners) so its very hard to strike up good conversation about the finer points of things because the mega otakus like you are way more introverted than you ever thought you were and thus you have no access to them

Update that nobody asked for or cares about:
Turns out the problem wasn't Wine or ITHVNR after all but rather the visual novel I was trying to hook. I just tried hooking a different VN and everything works perfectly.

I'm going to have to test it some more since this could just be a fluke where it only works with this one specific VN and no others, but I'm really hoping that's not the case. There are a bunch of newer VNs which I've been wanting to play which just won't run on my VM, so I might at long last be able to play them now. Finally, over a year after I started learning Japanese I can read something which isn't in an 800x600 window!

And the 気 thing is an idiom. There are a bunch of these 気 idioms, e.g. 気を遣う, 気に入る, etcetera.

Speaking of 気に入る... If you check 入る in a dictionary, you'll see it can be read as both はいる and いる, but いる is kind of archaic and in practice pretty much the only time you'll ever see this reading used is in idioms like this, and also compound verbs like 立ち入る.

>I have no idea how anyone sticks around djt long enough to become a thread personality.
I was a DJT regular back in 2013/2014 but left after realizing I was good enough to no longer need the support of the thread. I only come back when a friend links me to a specific post. The thing is that once you get sufficiently good at Japanese you realize that hanging around Japanese learning communities is just wasting time you could use to engage with the media you learned Japanese to consume in the first place. This means communities end up comprised of beginners and dekinais that lost their way. People like Nukemarine spend decades failing to learn Japanese for a reason: They get so into the language learning community that they never immerse themselves in Japanese content and really let their language skills blossom. The result of this is a shit community of beginners needing help with everything and autistic dekinais stomping around way past their welcome. The community you're looking for - a community of people competent in Japanese free from retarded people acting retarded - is in hobbyist message boards of people who already know Japanese talking about what they like. It's in Japanese message boards, it's in all the places that need Japanese but aren't about learning it. DJT is a nest and you must learn to fly away. The chick that never breaks its shell will never be born.

Though it's not so easy to leave a community you're used to, it's a necessary step for learning Japanese. In my case it helped that Jamal had just blighted our thread with his disgusting presence for the first time, which made the call to leave easier (and seeing him still shitting things up literally years later is comforting confirmation that I made the right call).

Yeah, pretty much this. Among the worst things you can do for yourself as a learner are to hang out in learner communities and follow gaijin e-celebs who make content aimed at learners. Both are just total wastes of time. Any time spent talking about learning or listening to somebody else talking about learning is time not spent doing the actually important thing for your Japanese - learning itself.

I keep drifting in and out of DJT. I check in out of curiosity and end up getting sucked back into the threads for a few days before realising how much time I'm wasting and leaving again. I really wish I could stop coming back for good but every now and then my curiosity just gets the best of me and I want to see what people are talking about here since I last checked in.

It will pass. I had the same problem way back when but eventually you just stop caring. It's kind of like an addiction that fades over time, but resets the second you visit the thread again. If you can resist the urge long enough it will go away for good. I can promise you that if you leave DJT for good, a month or two from now you won't be idly wondering what's going on in DJT, you'll have almost completely forgotten it even exists.

i have two decks
one custom made with kanji and their general meanings (kanji, meaning, stroke order)
and the other - standard core 6k
the thing i noticed is when i got ~95% correct answers on mature in core6k, my retention in kanji deck is below shit, somewhere around 64%
but when i struggle with core6k, the number of correct answers in kanji goes up significantly
this kanji deck is almost 2 years old, yet it stopped maturing, and there is 225 cards i always screw or will screw up in the future
i started core6k in january, and i'm doing 2 decks simultaneously since then, and core is much easier to work with imo

so my question is: do i have to screw up words to be good at recognizing meaning of kanji, or i'm just dumb?

i also have this addon called "true retention" but it always shows numbers around 80-90%

>For me the biggest problem with this add-on so far is definitely the pop-up disappearing off the bottom of the window.
Looks like Nazeka got an update today which has semi-fixed this. The pop-up no longer disappears off the screen, which is a definite improvement, but instead of going above the cursor when there's not enough downward screen space, the popup goes to the side of it which blocks your view of the line of text that you're reading.

This can be somewhat alleviated by changing the "popup positioning corner" setting from "top left" to "bottom left" or "bottom right"... however, then you get the opposite problem where this popup positioning issue occurs with text that's too near to the top of the screen instead of the bottom. Speaking of these "top left", etc. settings, their names all seem to indicate the exact opposite of what they actually do ("top left", for instance, has the popup appear to the bottom right of your cursor). See pic. Not sure if there's some sort of logic to this, but if there is then I'm not following it.

Anyhow, the best setting for now seems to be "bottom right" or "top right", depending on whether you see reading lines at the bottom or the top of the screen respectively as being the most important. Provided there's enough horizontal space, with the "* right" settings the popup will block the text behind (to the left of) your cursor, which seems preferable to it blocking what's in front (to the right) of your cursor. If you use either of the "bottom" settings though, you will probably need to check the "Reader insert at the bottom" box if you want to use Nazeka's built-in clipboard grabber ("Reader") window (though there's a note on the setting saying that this is "not recommended" for some reason; it might be due to the now-fixed disappearing popup issue, but it could also be for some other reason).

Wait, just discovered a new problem which seems to have been introduced by this update (or maybe it was around before and I just didn't notice). If you have a window with a width of less than ~1200px, the popups created are sometimes (or frequently, if the window is particularly narrow) too big to fit in the window and will get cut off by the right hand side of the screen. Not as bad at the original problem of the popup getting cut off by the bottom since at least this is avoidable, but it's still not really an ideal state of affairs.

>>20116693
I think it has a lot of promise if some of these basic issues get fixed. Instead of just mindlessly cloning Rikaichan or Rikaisama, the dev for this seems to be trying to do something new and improve upon the originals (e.g. with the addition of the Reader window).

>the popups created are sometimes too big to fit in the window and will get cut off by the right hand side of the screen
Seems like the "Lookup popup width" setting needs to be (window size / 2) - 7 to prevent this, or inversely the window width needs to be (2 x "Lookup popup width") + 7.

This only works if you haven't messed with the "Lookup popup scale" setting scale though, since that magnifies the popup along with its contents meaning that the figure you enter for the "Lookup popup width" setting will no longer reflect the actual width of your popup. In order to get around this, you need to set your "Lookup popup width" setting to figure which when multiplied by the "Lookup popup scale" will equal the figure you got from the (window size / 2) - 7 calculation*. I don't know how exactly you would go about calculating that though.

*So if (window size / 2) - 7 = 260, but you're using a "Lookup popup scale" of 1.3, your "Lookup popup width" will need to be 200 (200 x 1.3 = 260) .

Your mistake was that you dropped いる altogether (付いて) instead of just the い (付いてる), so you ended up adding ば to the て-form which is wrong. ば attaches to the 仮定形 (已然形).

Anyway, you need to do more reading and listening. Just the sound of 付いてば should've felt wrong to you without you having to think about it.

Fossilization includes those items, rules, and sub-systems that second language learners tend to retain in their interlanguage, that is, all those aspects of interlanguage that become entrenched and permanent, and that the majority of second language learners can only eliminate with considerable effort.[6] Moreover, it has also been noticed that this occurs particularly in adult second language learners' interlanguage systems.[1][2][7]

Reading comprehension, anon. This basically says that mistakes you make when you're still in the process of learning a language can solidify if you don't fix them. Interlanguage = How you use the language when you're still learning.

The only 2 differences between L1 and L2 acquisition is:
1) You have no language to help with L1, with L2 you have L1.
2) You're presumably a child so it's easier*.

*It's not actually easier because, again, you have no language that already exists in your head to help. It would be easier than a hypothetical adult trying to learn an L1 but that's unrelated.

matt and yogapants have a lot of weird assumptions when it comes to listening comprehension

matt said in the podcast that reading a lot makes listening comprehension easier but that this is something to be avoided because your brain is "cheating" by actually knowing the words which strikes me as pretty acrobatic doublethink

he also stresses that reading is incredibly dangerous and permanently fucks up your accent [citation needed] after spending an hour saying that getting a perfect accent is pretty much impossible anyway and going after it is a waste of time for most people

>> No.20122120

i imagine the reasoning has to do with the fact you don't actually know how read as a beginner, so you'll just be slowly bumbling over long sentences and trying to decipher them like code, and your japanese after 6 months will still be just as much of a shitty mess as the posts further up in this thread

a good reason to focus on listening is that it builds the facilities you need for interpreting text, in other words watch subbed anime

you can do it at full speed, which means it's enjoyable and you don't end up with 90% of your time wasted bumbling around misunderstanding easy grammar

you do have to pay attention to the japanese audio but this should be easy if you're genuinely interested in learning the language

Matt is a weird case of the seeing being led by the blind. I've noticed quite often lately he will mention how he got one of his new ideas or other from his clueless Patreons (e.g. this new Tango deck which is supposed to replace Tae Kim), violating his own rule of not listening to or taking advice from people who aren't fluent. Then to make matters worse he uses the position of trust and authority that he gets from being fluent to disseminate these ideas to the larger community as if they were coming from the mind of someone who is actually experienced with language learning and not just some low-level cult member from his Discord server who only just started learning Japanese last week.

Since then it's been a struggle to find anything that makes me want to read that much though and my progress has slowed down a lot since then. You absolutely can read for 6 hours a day though right from day 1, and it doesn't take any willpower so long as what you're reading is fun and you're reading it because you want to.

The world's easiest VN, Flyable Heart.

>and you aren't casually tossing some kind of prior experience in the closet.
I meant "day 1 of starting reading for the first time". My entire experience before starting reading:
>namasensei
>tae kim
>genki (no exercises)
>a handful of pages from the dojg before i got too bored to read anymore
>visualizing japanese grammar
>rtk up to 200 kanji before i got too bored to do anymore and quit
>idiotic attempt at learning kanji rote which utterly failed
>some of core2k
>quit japanese altogether because this is just horrible
>okay time to try again
>let's learn japanese basic 1 (i really feel like this ought to be recommended more here)
>start reading flyable heart
I think that's everything. Maybe I did some other stupid shit that I can't remember right now.

>I can't imagine understanding anything day 1
There was a lot that I didn't understand. Line after line would leave me clueless but I just opted not to worry about it and kept on reading. I liked the characters even if I didn't know what they were saying at times, and what I could gather of the plot was enough to keep me interested and wanting to know what happened next. By the end I was actually able to understand quite a lot (which isn't very impressive because it's Flyable Heart). It helps that with VNs and other audiovisual mediums, you can find enjoyment in things besides the language which makes reading/listening to them for long stretches of time a lot more tolerable than with text-only mediums like LNs.

Had I picked something more difficult as my first VN, it might not have gone this way though. Only when I got to the end of it and tried reading something else did I realize how easy Flyable Heart had been and how much I still sucked.

The idea behind the missing stories is that you should make your own with the key words, write them in something like Anki and learn them.

But for me the Koohii stories are superior, because it saves me a lot of time and I really like them.

But if you have trouble with remembering stories make your own. Don't waste your lifetime learning stories you don't care about. The only bad thing about your own stories is that you can easily fuck your stories up or waste too much time for your stories.

I did that for 3 months.. it's pretty hardcore. I would say show some restraint on it. A little restraint goes a long ways. There is a dimmenishing return. 3 hours seems to be ideal because you're doing a lot of reps (200-300, but it totally depends on what you're learning). From experience though I'd say don't do over 3 hours. It's just bad in a few ways that you don't need to find out the hard way. Immerse the rest of the day. I notice huge benefit from doing both. Start reading a little too, but start off really small.

Didn't even realize you could do that.

>I'm guessing this doesn't have the passive/potential bug yomichan has?
Doesn't seem to. The deinflection/deconjugation feature actually seems a bit more robust in this than in other add-ons, e.g.
食べていれば in Rikaichamp, RikaiRebuilt and Yomichan will give you "食べる (<- te)", whereas Nazeka gives you "食べる ~teiru - provisional".

i've been silently watching the archives and only chimed in to join in on a meme earlier but i really have to comment on this

nazeka's deconjugator attempt to model the recursive nature of japanese verbal conjugations, which is why it looks "robust" to you

but this also means that it has the potential to be very slow and/or deconjugate things that are technically ungrammatical if its rules are written poorly. i meant to add a way to import a new set over and override the built-in deconjugation rules (which are still missing things like くる) but never got around to it

almost everything else uses deinflect.dat, which is why the other things all had the same passive/potential/causative bugs

What do all these dots next to individual symbols supposed to convey.

When I met them before in this book in other places I thought it is over-emphasis, Like.Capitalizing.Every.Word, or interposing clap emojis between every word.
