I would think most of them are fairly self-explanatory? Kinosaki crosses off a lot of things simultaneously, I wanted to stop at a couple of places on the Sea of Japan side and wanted to make an overnight ryokan/hot spring trip someplace that isn't completely overdeveloped like a lot of onsen towns seem to have become. I work for an architecture office so spending a couple of days on the Benesse art islands felt like a must-do. I was initially going to skip Shirakawago just because it seems like it's overly touristy, but there's a big moonshine festival happening there while I'll be in Kanazawa so I figured I'd stop over for half a day while I'm in the area. Plus those houses make my dick hard from a building science perspective.

I've done something very similar.
Unless you're proactive and not crippled by depression and bad lifestyle habits, you usually wind up spending a lot of time in your apartment or walking aimlessly to kill time until your lease terminates and you have to move back in with your parents.

I did that for two months after dropping out of university. In retrospect, I should have just gotten some two-bit service industry job to support myself and occupy the most of my day.

Well my plan was to go to university, but that fell through and it was cheaper to pay rent for the final two months of my lease than to break it and come back home immediately (as I would have had to pay additional penalties amounting to three months rent)

By the time I dropped out, I was in uni for six months. The newness of the city had worn off, and even after spending my time seeing sights and doing fun things it got really boring. During the final three weeks or so I pretty much ran out of spending money and killed time on /jp/ or walked around taking pictures and drinking cheap Starbucks coffees. Being depressed about not having a plan in life didn't help.

Climbed the whole thing in about two hours, though I was huffing and puffing through a few sections.
Plenty of elderly folk and even children made the climb, so I'd say it wasn't too bad. Seems like a pretty popular spot to go, especially during autumn.
Had decently well-made paths reinforced with wood for the climb. A bit narrow in certain sections though which made two-way traffic impossible.

It is 3.7km long which is the second shortest there is.
I was in the same boat as you as there are only two buses which go to Sukawa a day, so I wouldn't want to try any of the longer trails or I'd end up sleeping on the mountain.

Its the darker blue trail to the north of the mountain on this website.

Thanks for the map and info. I haven't had a chance to go in autumn yet, but I'd like to go hiking more up in Tohoku for that trip. This looks like a good one that's more in my ability level. I definitely overestimated it when I was planning Mt. Haku, and if I'd had any sense I would have spent the night at the manned lodge. Definitely didn't help that I fucked up and didn't have breakfast or any food other than 2 tiny packets of trail mix for the entire hike, and only water to drink.

I think I know which one, the one at dusk right? Can see Yoshinoya store on the right?

Yea that is my favorite of Shijo. Tried numerous times to get the right fell, and that is the only one that came close. Should probably try a different location on that street.

Glad you liked it though. Film photography may not be as flexible, or high resolution, or detailed as digital, but it is more than good enough for most applications. Plus it is a lot of fun, it is a very tactile process, and you have to really learn your hardware to get the best shot possible.

Make sure to post some of what you shoot. Haven’t seen very much film in these threads.

I have been way too busy with school or work to shoot lately, and I started using 120 (6x4.5) which I don’t have a scanner for. When the leaves start turning in earnest I might have more to post.

Hmmm compared to other places not really, at least to me the draw of Hikone is that it's a pretty small city that seemed laid back. I know there's lots of treks on the surrounding mountains/hills, and you can go out on the lake (more like sea).
That being said I wasn't there long, I'm sure there's lots you can do.

When would you prefer to travel to Japan? I was thinking that autumn would be the most cozy and photogenic but was also thinking about going in time for my 30th birthday in mid January. Would autumn be pretty much over by end of November or is it still going by then? Obviously it would be more "meaningful" to go around my birthday, but I don't want everything to be closed and snowed in. We already have cold and boring winters here in Sweden so a different kind of scenery would be nice.

It depends where you are going.
If you plan to go anywhere north of Tokyo (Tohoku or Yamagata regions for example) there'll be plenty of snow by then, if you're staying south or west then you might get snow, but it'll probably only last a day or two.
Autumn colors only last a couple weeks, Tohoku is in prime time currently and I think it moves down the country, so in a few weeks it'll be all over.

Things don't really close much due to snow around here.

Much of the city isn't being rebuilt, period. Hell, you don't even have to go outside of Japan to find people giving up and moving to higher ground - many of the coastal towns in Tohoku were effectively abandoned since most residents resettled elsewhere.

But a man with a leg amputated is still alive, isn't he? Even if he'll never have the quality of life he once enjoyed again.

You're kinda right. A lot of towns are staying basically where they are but changing residential zoning so that houses won't be in certain areas or all buildings will be forbidden.
Other towns have practically moved a couple of kilometers or up onto nearby hills. Where I am living they moved the rail line to go over a hill instead of along the coast and the two towns have basically moved with the rail line.

Over the course of a summer we have around 10 days at 40-45°C in South Australia but I wasn't ready for 35°C in Tokyo/Fuji at 80% humidity in August - it's unrelenting if you're out in it. When it's that hot here, the humidity is often under 20% and can be as low as 2-3%.

Not him but under the DoD you are under a contract. At any point they can make you move to any location. Granted if you have a Japanese Wife and Speak Japanese then you could argue with that and they may allow you to stay. But you're still under the cover of the US Government so most don't care about your feelings, just the mission

From personal experience with the military and DoD its better to start off with school, get in good with an American company that has offices in Japan, learn Japanese, move to Japan on a work Visa, get experience, marry Japanese girl and gain a "dual citizenship" and work there for the rest of your life. The Japanese don't recognize dual citizenship but they will NOT separate you from your wife and kids so if she's Japanese then its good.

DoD Subcontractor, radar tech
I'll probably continue to shift around contracts in Japan because they pay extremely well and almost always offer free housing. Subcontractor is a lot better because they'll let you stay on indefinitely if you want, so you'll never actually be moved out of the country as long as you want to stay on contract.

I was just constantly scouring LinkedIn and Glassdoor. Misawa has lots of radar/jet tech jobs, Sasebo has a few (mostly GS position though, and those are really hard to get), Yokosuka has some open sometimes (again, mostly GS).
If you're looking at Subcontractor though:
Misawa
Shariki
Kyoumigahara (something like that, near Shariki)
Atsugi
Camp Zama
Okinawa has a shitton all the time

The contracts are usually Rayhteon, PAE, L3, Lockheed (Misawa), KBRWyle, and a few smaller ones. Cubic runs the radar test range near Misawa, so that'd be cool to do if you like working on threat radar simulators (simulating enemy missiles and radar and shit). There are plenty of options, you just gotta find em at the right time. Definitely helps to have hook ups, but they are also definitely not needed.
