As someone who's lived that life before, it exists, you just have to live somewhere specific and have really good luck finding places where the landlords aren't all 欲張り金人.

>year of our lord 2013
>graduate college
>parents finally fed up with me living with them, kick me out
>shit, scramble to find living arrangements that aren't the cargo area of my Volvo wagon
>rent $350/mo for barebones downtown apartment (250 square foot)
>bills usually less than $75/mo with most of it being internet (having a tiny apartment means no real potential for high bills)
>too cool for sink laundry, would just walk to the least sketchy local laundromat or drive if it was too cold
>spent a shit ton on really nice/tasty food and beer since I was spending basically nothing on base existence costs
>never at restaurants/bars though, always cooked for myself because I'm a stingy piece of shit
>actually did sleep on floor futon because couldn't fit big things into my apartment due to shitty entryway layout/stairs
>sheets/pillows/pillowcases and the like were very nice though because fuck sleeping with shitty bedding
>"couch" was Mahjong style floor couch around low table since it's all I could fit up the stairway
>most expensive home thing I owned besides electronics was my A/C unit which was only needed 3 months out of the year anyway (probably could do without but eh, fuck it)
>lucked out and got a job I could walk to which also paid reasonably well
>still kept Volvo because winter is a bitch up north

Honestly even though I've since upgraded/bought a cheap house/now own a slightly less ratty Volvo wagon, I miss the simplicity of it. OFC I wasn't really studying or doing anything worth a damn at that time, mostly just working and saving up to buy house/hanging out with friends/cooking/reading. Even with my luxurious eating and boozing I was still easily banking $1000 a month or so.

The real sad part is, I'm paying less for my house overall and have fewer inconveniences than the minimal apartment life. Mostly, laundry. Fuck laundromats man. And taking out the trash, that's a lot easier now that I can just walk 10 feet outside instead of down 3 flights of stairs and through a creepy-ass alleyway.

Buying high quality food adds up really fast. It's easy to do $100/month for food, but it's just as easy to do 5x that if you constantly buy high-quality meats, breads, and high-priced amish-grown veggies every week at the local farmer's market. That, and expensive-ass craft brews which are only marginally better than reasonably priced beers.

The annoying thing is, my friends were always broke as shit all the time despite working similar paying jobs. Mostly because they were stupid and did some combination of the following

>bought a new car
>rented an expensive place
>had significant others
>have pets
>ignore broken shit that becomes more expensive the longer you ignore it
>bought worthless shit all the time, esp. game microtransactions/twitch subs/patreons/magic the gathering

I didn't realize it till a day towards the tail end of my cheap apartment living days, but most of my friends rarely if ever have more than $500 in the bank at any given time... I don't understand how that's even possible.

>>20065634
You're gonna make it anon. Just be smart and don't let emotions guide your decision making/financial things. However, DO enjoy at least 1 thing and spend a bit more on it, but ONLY if it's something worth a damn. Food is worth it but only because it's related to a useful skill (cooking) and being well-fed enhances your life in all other areas.

Manga is reading, but it's not AS MUCH reading as other forms of written media. One of the most important things about learning languages (or anything in general really) is that quantity of exposure is the most important thing. Unfortunately, the quantity of words in a Manga is much lower than in the news, in a LN, or even in most video games.

As you are a beginner let me tell you how to learn this epic language.

First completely give up subbed anime and watch at least an hour of raws starting yesterday.

also learn kana and some basic grammar from a site like tae kim. Spend no more than like 2 weeks on this step.

Then start consuming written media you are interested in. Do not worry about kanji or vocab or anything like that as you will eventually learn all that as a side affect of consuming media.

Do not worry about trying to understand all the grammar or concepts as long as you get the gist your understanding will improve almost like magic.

Also most importantly make sure you have fun. Anyone who does not have fun is doomed to regret there time with the language and grow to hate anime and other stuff. Just look at this thread and ajjatters like matt.

Hello,

for easy anime people generally recommend kemono friends, but others I found easy early on where yuru camp, koe no katachi(amazing movie btw), non non byori, and flip flappers. Give the show you watch some time as it takes a bit to get used to the speech of a show even if the show is reletively easy.

Also as you mentioned vns, I know people here hate leddit but the visualnovel sub is actually very helpful for learners. Set up the text hooker and you will learn the words and kanji no core or flashcards required.

Honestly a small part of what 勝元 has posted is some of the very best language learning advice out there. The rest is full of contradictions, gaps of information you will have to figure out yourself, flat out bad advice (His method for going monolingual), and worst of all sales pitches for crappy AJATT subscriptions. I talked to a Japanese instructor once (I was visiting his class just out of curiosity). His total of 3 students were extremely behind, one of them was an actual autist/mental retard (not even kidding) and the other 2 were 2 teenage girls that seemed to be there together I'm assuming because of their personal hobbies, which probably included Japanese media. They were a whole year in and still couldn't get the past tense right. After the class ended me and the instructor a had a little chat, and he ended up asking me if I were into anime. I just avoided his question and went back home since I didn't want to be lumped together with his students. So basically, I don't think they really care. Some of them might even be interested in it.

the premise was you'd need to learn these words before you'd be able to read, hence the name (words for reading)

I quite like Anki. I actually did all of RTK on it. Throwing myself against anime I didn't understand and trying to mine it was hell though. I'm doing a small premade vocabulary deck now to make mining less painful when I get to it (and I'm not trying to mine my quota right now, just mining whatever I feel like which makes the anime much more enjoyable)

Have you tried just enjoying anime and not trying to mine it. Back when I was an anki drone mining always gave me stress. But if you truly enjoy anki しょうがねえ . Do whatever you want but just remember that anki is not by any means necessary or particularly helpful.

Kind of... I tried to just listen to as much anime as possible throughout the day while doing RTK. I definitely picked up some words that way without ever using Anki but I figure 10 cards is small enough it shouldn't bother me (plus since I'm doing this a really relaxed way I might forget stuff more easily if I don't record it)

Your main input should be comprehensible
There's no rule that says you shouldn't be reading academic papers or law texts until you've achieved native-like fluency but you don't want those as your main input if you're a beginner because it'd be terribly inefficient.

>> No.20071438

>>20071405
Ah yeah, I definitely understand the text after looking up the heaps of unknown words. There's still some unknown grammar I don't know but the main stuff is comprehensible.
However until now I was only used to texts in textbooks such as tobira (so no actual native texts) and like i mentioned, all the unknown words are a problem. I'm not sure if that already constitutes as being too challenging.

Would it be too inefficient to just power through it and hope the words will stick after looking them up a lot of times or should I really just find easier native material?
