Honestly even though I've since upgraded/bought a cheap house/now own a slightly less ratty Volvo wagon, I miss the simplicity of it. OFC I wasn't really studying or doing anything worth a damn at that time, mostly just working and saving up to buy house/hanging out with friends/cooking/reading. Even with my luxurious eating and boozing I was still easily banking $1000 a month or so.

The real sad part is, I'm paying less for my house overall and have fewer inconveniences than the minimal apartment life. Mostly, laundry. Fuck laundromats man. And taking out the trash, that's a lot easier now that I can just walk 10 feet outside instead of down 3 flights of stairs and through a creepy-ass alleyway.

What's that site which you can download japanese indie games, mostly made in RPG Maker. There were a lot of terror games there as well, I believe Ao Oni was one of the games that were originally there.

It's a good site for practicing because most of the games use simple grammar.

Buying high quality food adds up really fast. One problem... Apartment was too small for a regular sized fridge, so I had a smaller-than-usual fridge whose freezer was barely big enough to do that sort of thing. I considered buying a decent-sized stand-alone freezer for this purpose but never felt like hauling it up the stairs.

One of the most important things about learning languages (or anything in general really) is that quantity of exposure is the most important thing. Unfortunately, the quantity of words in a Manga is much lower than in the news, in a LN, or even in most video games.

Basically while it's ok to enjoy Manga, you should also enjoy more word-dense works of various types.

First completely give up subbed anime and watch at least an hour of raws starting yesterday.

also learn kana and some basic grammar from a site like tae kim. Spend no more than like 2 weeks on this step.

Then start consuming written media you are interested in. Do not worry about kanji or vocab or anything like that as you will eventually learn all that as a side affect of consuming media.

Do not worry about trying to understand all the grammar or concepts as long as you get the gist your understanding will improve almost like magic.

Also most importantly make sure you have fun. Anyone who does not have fun is doomed to regret there time with the language and grow to hate anime and other stuff. Just look at this thread and ajjatters like matt.

But I understood a littlebit of anime when I started as I ate like 10 manga and a couple vns before starting so that might of helped a bit. for easy anime people generally recommend kemono friends, but others I found easy early on where yuru camp, koe no katachi(amazing movie btw), non non byori, and flip flappers. Give the show you watch some time as it takes a bit to get used to the speech of a show even if the show is reletively easy.

Also as you mentioned vns, I know people here hate leddit but the visualnovel sub is actually very helpful for learners. Set up the text hooker and you will learn the words and kanji no core or flashcards required.

Honestly a small part of what 勝元 has posted is some of the very best language learning advice out there. The rest is full of contradictions, gaps of information you will have to figure out yourself, flat out bad advice (His method for going monolingual), and worst of all sales pitches for crappy AJATT subscriptions. In the long run the website does much more good than bad, but you will need to think for yourself (or unironically watch Matt's videos for a second opinion. His monolingual transition method + Japanese level up's are gold combined)
