I'm a foreigner fluent in Japanese and I know several others personally. It's not that hard of a language really, aside from learning kanji, which isn't as bad as it seems at first.

Also, it's not really that particular joke/essay that pisses me off so much, but it's all the other stereotypes about Japanese people that people generally believe to be true. When does humor cross the line? Here it's not so bad but it's still reaching for it.

Took Japanese 1 in my senior year of high school three years ago. I can remember 87% of hiragana, two or three katakana, and no kanji. I have okay grammar skills and the vocabulary of a six year-old.

Serious advice from one of the fake nihonjin above: find something fun that's written in Japanese, buy a dictionary or bookmark jdict, and just dive in. Go (囲碁) books, playing Clannad untranslated, whatever.
