Tried to get into jp cinema and watched "Confessions" because it won the jp academy award for that year
and I didn't like it because it was as though I was reading a book....too much shit I didn't need to know crammed into a 100min movie, too much narration and for its length felt kind of long and plodding, never seeming to go anywhere

judging from the past winners Japan really does slice-of-life well like sanchome no yuuhi, departures, our little sister, the great passage, etc. but this best picture win baffles me

Looking for a horror movie I saw years ago and cant recall the name of.

A lot nonsense happens in it but it's all part of one larger story not an anthology like Tales of Terror from Tokyo.

It opens with eyeball slug creatures sliding accross a highway with cars running over them and a creepy song/chant done by kids. In no particular order a family moves into a new house with a spooky ghost in the futon closet that ends up killing all of them I think. A young man gets a job as a waiter and sees a masked old man sitting alone at a corner all night long and goes to talk to him before another waitress stops him and turns out it's a spooky monster. A bunch of drunk bros are wandering the streets when they see a sexy geisha wearing a basket over her head but she is also a spooky monster. A young man gets a cursed sticker on his motorcycle and crashes lightly into some shrubs and talks to someone passing by before the dude pulls him out of the shrubs and turns out motorcycle dude has an entire half of his body missing and he was talking to the father of the family moving in the new house.

Thank you in advance.

What are some drama that you'd put above the norm on a writing/directing level? Or in other words, drama where it was the plot or cinematography that impressed you, rather than just girls being cute.

For me it was Mother. It looked like a typical housewife drama on first glance, but the production values were above average and the script does a really good job in getting you emotionally invested.

If you like family drama and character growth, both physically and personality, Hanbun, Aoi is a must watch (written by the writer of Long Vacation, I supposed). Well, most asadora tells a story of main character's growth and how the environment she's raised in affected herself in all aspect, but Hanbun, Aoi plot flows naturally and the drama doesn't feel too forced like certain asadora and regular jdrama.

well for me I'd say Nobuta wo Produce is one of the best SoL drama I have seen. The characters and their dialogues are written as realistically as possible. Even the problems they encounter every episode is as realistic as possible too. Nothing overly theatrical happens.

>>19904187
Asadora runs for 15 minutes each episodes. When you totaled a whole series up and compared to regular drama run time, you will get roughly 50+ episodes per series. Also, asadora make use of time skips so that the character can develop throughout the whole story. I have only watched Teru Teru Kazoku, Beppin-san and Hanbun Aoi; out of these three Hanbun Aoi has the most consistent writing, no forced drama down your throat and the time skips flow naturally.

Teru Teru Kazoku is fine, though Ishihara Satomi, the lead actress didn't matter until episode 100 (it's kinda strange since the story mostly focuses on her mother's decision to drive the story), but the story is fine, not the best though.

Beppin-san, has a lot of forced drama and the time skips doesn't transitioned well. I watched it purely because Yoshine Kyoko is the lead.

So I suggest that if you want to watch asadora, give it chance until you reach week 5, or at least until the lead actress in on screen, since the story will start with main character's childhood. You can drop it if it bores you, then.

The acting and logical leaps as a whole feel exaggerated in this, I know this isn't uncommon in drama, but I just don't like it and many drama do fine without that. Finally, I REALLY hated the gang leader dude, I hope he's actually dead and won't come back for the rest of the series. >> No.19968100

>>19968048
I haven't seen Ran, but I think I have seen all his other jidaigeki and a few of his gendaigeki
Kagemusha is very good, but I feel like it is ultimately far too long and doesn't really develop the kagemusha as a character as much as it should to make the ending meaningful. I get the point that he's becoming a shadow himself, but I feel like the ending of Throne of Blood, which highlights the same theme (futility of unbridled ambition, the ultimate hollowness of their efforts), is more powerful because we have seen Macbeth develop the whole way through.
I further appreciate the adaptation of the supernatural elements of Macbeth into the Japanese context, and I think it goes over well in that film.

11% is decent/good nowadays, and it’s kinda a stable for the NTV’s Wed 10PM time slot (depending on the lead). We can’t assume if it’s bad or good just yet, some dramas tend to pick up live audience around mid to final episodes. With that being said, I’m not confident this one will be a hit, but I hope it will prove me wrong.

When did Japanese TV get good? I always remembered Japanese TV shows from the 90s and early 2000s looking remarkably worse than their western counterparts. I just watched some of the newer shows on Netflix and I'm impressed. Some genuinely good productions.

Why was Japanese TV in the early 2000s so bad anyway?

>> No.20086638

>>20086275
Probably two reasons:
1. Budget
2. Western acting style in movies was highly influenced my method acting technic, whereas Japanese was stilly highly bound to classical theatre and might seem like overacting. Over years the western influence led to the shift in the acting style towards something closer to what you are used to.
