I hate to say this but I'm about to declare that playing regular vidya games is not reading.

I've spent the last 4 hours playing Zelda and have only encountered like 20 new words total. Normally I'd call this a success because I've been able to enjoy the large majority of text without thinking about it, but this is some slow progress. Radicals don't really help much. Take the "movement" radical for instance. It is extremely generic and many of the kanji containing it don't have any immediate association with "movement". For instance, 違う. The fuck does that have to do with movement? Not gonna help me at all.

This is why I stopped RTK after the first 300 and decided to learn kanji along with vocab.

This has resulted in me not learning certain readings until months after learning one Kanji (didn't know リキ　for 力　till I ran into 人力 like 8 months after learning 力) but all in all it's much more practical and easier to remember since I can rely on prior knowledge to assist with sorting out new words.

Not knowing the Kanji is what it is, but eventually you run out of Kanji to not know. Just takes time.

japanese has got to be one of the hardest languages to learn to hear based on how fucking similar everything sounds.

The onyomi is only gonna help you in compound kanji words. If you encounter a new kanji by itself the radicals won't help you.

But say you know how to read 正義, then most likely 征 in 征服 and 議/犠 in 議論 / 犠牲 will be read the same way as the 正 and 義.

Note: 正 can also be read as しょう so that is also a possibility. 症状　証言 etc.

I hesitate to mention Matt, but I think his advice about watching raw anime from day one is worth considering. I think it would help a lot as you went through Genki if you had some authentic native material to listen to so you could hear the grammar you're learning about actually being used in meaningful contexts.

As for Core, you can do it alongside Genki if you want. Maybe limit your new cards to 15 so as not to overwhelm yourself too much, then keep an ear out for the words you've learned in your listening material.

In terms of what anime to watch, rewatching shows you've already seen is a good choice since you already understand what's going on which can help with figuring out the dialogue. Bonus points if it's CGDCT since the language will tend toward the simpler end of the spectrum. But you can do what you want; If you'd prefer, you could just pick a bunch of stuff from this season and watch that as it airs, or watch some shows from your backlog instead.

Genki is designed around the exercises being there, and also lectures being given. Example: the case particle function of から is ONLY taught in the vocabulary list for a reading exercise.

No. The problem is that you can make connections for any radical, which is fine when you already know what the kanji is. But if it is a new kanji, your brain isn't gonna figure out some obscure thing like road = different / wrong. It's going to go for the thing that makes the most sense. Most kanji are only loosely related to their radicals, which doesn't help a lot if you only know the radical.

When reading RAW manga how much comprehension is enough? Like if you know what they are saying but don't know the grammar points, or why they used them is that enough to move on? or do you google until you figure out everything?

That's why you contact them and explain your situation. One of my friends was pretty similar (different school, theirs was in Kyoto) and his school just had him cram in more early written classes while in verbal classes that was around his level. After 3 months he was mostly caught up and other than keeping a dictionary on-hand for some of the kanji he missed, he was fine.
So if they give you that option, prepare for a few months of cramming and a lot of homework/self study

And actually It doesn't really matter where the tip is. I can do the 'L' both with the tip touching my teeth, or further back. Same with the 'D'. Just try these sounds and move your tongue back and forth, you'll see it doesn't matter at all. This is why all explanations make zero sense to me.

Anyways, if it's that hard for you then you can literally just switch out any "R" for "D" and just go with it. It's not correct, as the sound is a bit of a D and L hybrid, but mostly D. If you listen to Japanese R, you hear the "click" that the D sound makes rather than the soft flick of the L sound. Maybe think of it like you're sounding the L sound, but instead of flicking your tongue you are clicking it like with the D sound, for lack of a better word.

Not obscure at all, I think I got most lewd words from slice of life manga.

Why?
It's not like I stopped consuming Japanese media in that time.

The only words I forgot so far were political terms that I never encounter or words I mined before getting tired of anki.
The words I still know I can safely delete, their easy interval is 5+ years anyways.

So instead of deleting it all I'm deleting >80% as I go through it.
