The etymologies for 'machine' and 'organ' are pretty cool, though.
Machine comes from the root magh-, which also originated words like might/may and magic.
Organ comes from the root werg-, which also originated words like work and energy.

It's just that most languages tend to bury these origins under thousands of years of phonetic and orthographic changes, while Kanji solves that problem by (partially) decoupling the root from its pronunciation.

In the first few months of reading my ability grew significantly, but I don't feel like I've made any progress at all in months now. Fluency still feels very much out of reach and with each month that passes I don't feel like I'm getting any closer to it. It's pretty disheartening.

OP here, there MIGHT be like 100 kanji total in the game, which is awesome provided you have the vocabulary to support reading partial kana and full kana words.

For example, if you didn't know that くろまじゅつ=黒魔術, or 水晶=水晶, or a decent amount of other words, you might be stuffed. Then again, you might have an easier time hunting down the words. The grammar is piss easy for the most part unless you're not good at figuring out dialectical quirks/formal/archaic speech.

Some of the kanji would admittedly be nearly unreadable to a new learner though, 殿 and 動 come to mind as they BARELY fucking fit.

I never played the game in English and this is my first time playing either of the games, they're definitely good for GBA but as RPGs I think they're a bit rough around the edges. Still, there's a shit ton of text to read and a lot of nice vocabulary. This game is generally gonna be i+1 for someone approaching N2 so you should rarely need a dictionary for it.

It's not simply the fact that they stay up late, it's that your brain is more tired out by that point of the day so retention becomes harder.

Moreso than time of day, the best time to study is when you are most rested. And for 99% of people, you are most rested during the morning (after waking up fully). Rested being the opposite of tired here, of course.

All languages are fucked in their own way, that is the natural consequence of languages evolving over time, or being based on languages with flaws.

But let's be honest, Chinese / Japanese is fucked in ways that far exceed any other languages. And even they acknowledge that, which is why there have been many pushes over the years to simplify the languages. Really, they are only holding on to some things out of stubbornness and pride out of this point. The language is beautiful, but it has no good justification for still being as ass-backwards as it is.

That makes him more dependent on his wife, giving her more control in the relationship compared to if she took a japanese men.

Also, westerners tend to have a more emancipated mindset.

Those are a few of the reasons.

Japanese man are the reason Japanese women are likely to go for foreigners. Let me clarify that most Japanese women still prefer Japanese men, but there are a subset of them who are rather annoyed with how effeminate and indecision Japanese men have become. These women believe foreign men to be decisive, sturdy, and not likely to fret over the little things. Basically, manly. And the exotic aspect doesn't hurt either.

As for hooking up with Japanese women, that part is not hard. There are bars which are specifically used for Japanese women hooking up with white men. Just go to one of those.

>The only real flaw Japanese has is that it's way too vague because people drop half the words to save time.
Slavic languages are the SAME. You don't have to explicitly state the subject, use pronouns etc. Everything is clear, and if there is something unclear (are you saying that never happens in super strict English?) you can always use a bunch of additional words to specify what you mean. The language being more 'vague' (to your Anglo taste) is a plus because you can communicate your thoughts in faster manner. You don't bloat your language with useless words like the articles.

Tell me if you knew what "the" meant in English, the most common of words in it - and you read an article knowing just that one word, you would basically know no word at all, because it doesn't have any meaning besides being used in context.

tl;dr you are biased and assume every European language is like yours; just look at your spelling system for fuck sake, and then talk about retarded things in langauges

I'm reminded of that old bullshit video about a deaf guy making his son deaf so he could experience the wonderful deaf community, and somehow likening that to hearing people giving their kid a cochlear implant to prevent deafness. Language is standardising within national bounds, and even internationally in some cases. People within specific geographic areas are losing their native dialects in favour of the standard version of that language, and in the UK for instance you see Americanisms being used at an increasing rate. Given enough time, I think dialects will largely disappear, along with entire minority languages such as Cantonese. I'm not so confident that national languages will ever go away and just blend into one single language though.

>English pitch-less accent
In the case that an English speaker isn't using pitch accent when speaking Japanese, they will be using stress accent instead which gives more or less than same effect, but most likely they will often stress the wrong syllables based on how it would feel natural to stress them were they speaking English, so the words they say end up sounding weird.

I doubt it's especially annoying or anything. If you've listened to ESLs speak English before, you'll almost certainly have heard them mispronounce words in this way a lot, e.g. perhaps saying UMbrella instead of umBRELLa. It just sounds weird and gives you an urge to correct them.

nope, I just did some Core then just kept mining my own words and playing games/reading a couple of VNs and learning kanji through that vocab.

>Do you have any regrets or recommendations after achieving decent reading ability?
I regret I haven't read any complex VNs or books or stuff like that in over a year and generally been slacking on japanese study besides from what I passively learn every day by googling and reading random internet shit. I think if I had read more intensively I could be reading Muramasa right about now.
And recommendations idk, english definitions from dictionaries are garbage for things that aren't simple nouns, you should try to understand japanese definitions in japanese dictionaries as soon as you can, the meaning will stick so much better than some word the people that made the english dictionary decided to stick on it.

because even after learning kanji with a method like that you'll have to learn their more nuanced meanings by reading and vocab. also I guess it pretends you to learn the readings by rote memorization? that's fine if you got a really good memory but even then you won't really be able to guess which readings a word uses until you've seen the kanji a couple of times in other words. I guess it has its merits if you want to learn a lot of kanji quick, but even then it doesn't sound very useful for when you actually find those kanji in the wild.

I've been doing 11 RTK cards a day. Including reviews it usually doesn't take more than 30 minutes, currently almost 1k cards in. Then I spend most my time reading.

Personally I think RTK really helps. Before I thought if I simply spend enough time reading and mining words I would get there eventually. And that might be true however it was inefficient. I just kept forgetting even common words over and over. I couldn't remember the readings of kanji no matter what, ect.. It was depressing and made me quit.

However words that are composed of kanji I know are easier to remember. I'm also better at remember their readings. Just encountering them a few times while reading is usually enough. I'm not even keeping a mining deck right now.

I think it gives you some kind of "anchor" to group all that info to. Rather than remembering it as "It's that kanji that looked a bit like this" it becomes "It's the kanji for X".
Which is closer to how a Japanese person might remember it. You might have heard a Japanese person say something like "My name is written with the kanji for X and Y".

For a Japanese person X and Y would be Japanese words. But I don't know Japanese and trying to learn both at the same time doesn't make it any easier. So why not go with a structured approach which uses mnemonics and english keywords which have a similar meaning.

Or maybe this is all placebo and I'm high on koolaid.

The thing is English subs still allow you to follow the plot without having to pause every word you don't understand. Obviously Japanese subtitles are going to be better, but not only are they hard to find but it's also going to take you a long time to get through it.
What I'm saying is, consciously pay attention to the dialogue in Japanese, and for the parts you don't understand just read the subs, and occasionally look up words/structures you don't understand. That is if you want to watch the anime, learn, and still enjoy the anime. If you just want it exclusively for learning, then sure use Japanese subs.
I don't think English/Spanish are a good comparison, they both use the same set of characters (with a couple more for Spanish). In Japanese even if the subs were all kana you still wouldn't be able to read them at the speed an English/Spanish speaker would read subs of the opposite language, let alone kanji that there's going to be a lot you don't know or not used to.

Should I drop my kanji deck?
I do it at a very slow pace, so it's not like it drains much time, but I think I don't really benefit much from it.

I wrote them down at first, but since that took too much time I stopped and just tried to remember the meanings, but it feels like learning kanji by learning vocab is better.

Did anyone do kanji study like this?
Is there anything I gain from it that I don't get from core / my mining deck?

So I started learning Japanese probably quite a while back now, only did kanji damage grinding, but I had to stop once I started uni which lasted 4 years, I've finished all that recently and actually have free time during my days so want to start up again, I still remember some kanji and know my hiragana and katakana etc. but the thing that always gave me grief and even does now is grammar, so I want to attack that head first as I feel like once I understand that, even if I don't know the words in a sentence exactly I can look those up and get the meaning whereas the position I was in previously was I knew the words in the sentence but had no clue about the grammar so couldn't extrapolate a meaning, is it viable to just focus entirely on grammar now and read to learn as I do not want to go back to grinding kanji as that honestly on it's own is just a waste of time.

tl;dr: is the kanji damage grammar deck and the yotsuba reading guide a good place to (re)start learning from if I already know some kanji and all hira/kata kana?

The only way to develop an intuitive understanding of grammar is exposure to native content. That said, it wouldn't hurt to read Tae Kim or watch Let's Learn Japanese Basic or something before hand to give yourself some conscious knowledge of how the language works (just don't expect it to help you very much). If you really don't want to read a grammar guide and just want a quick introduction to the language, something like https://youtu.be/x9-e_3GHrzw or http://nihongo.monash.edu/kanaqadgtj.html might work as well.

I have / did / will again never got to the end though, but I just want something to go with it as it's all well and good reading the x amount of textbook examples tae kim has, but I want something along side that helps to really reinforce through over exposure to stuff to help it stick and make sense for examples where it's not so clear in other material.

>exposure to native content.

That's what I'm looking for, but somethings that's actually sort of tailored to teaching etc. which is why I thought about those yotsubato manga in the guide. Just wanted to know if it's good to dive back into that without wasting time grinding kanji again first.

Do not do that. Any sort of content that's been tampered with to make it "more suitable for teaching" is worse than native content at best and shit at worst. And Yotsubato is by no means a manga for language learners. It appears in various guides because it's supposed to be compelling, that's all.

I used to do something similar, but it would really annoy me when I'd see a new word with kanji that I recognize from another word, for example 秘密, but I couldn't remember if it was the first or second one, so I couldn't make a good guess about how to read the new word.

Now I'm learning how to write words. For most people it probably isn't worth the time, but for me it is.
