This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, bara, visual novels, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

reminder that dojg contains more errors and misleading information than hjgp
also genki is worse than tae kim regardless of whether you're teaching yourself or not
also core 2k/6k is garbage
also if you don't read/listen a lot and instead just drown yourself in "study" materials like textbooks or drill books or graded readers then you will not learn japanese
also rtk is literally worthless if you don't know japanese (because lazy kanji in rtk order is useless/bad/ineffective) and worthless if you do know japanese (because you do not need anything remotely like it to learn to write if you know japanese and if you think otherwise you're delusional)
new!!!: learning communities are full of eternal beginners people who pretend to know japanese. surround yourself with people who have actually successfully learned it, not learners. this counts out djt, koohi, r/learnjapanese, and the ajatt/mia cult.

Or do you plan on getting called out so you can repeat that the person has to chill out despite you being the one to constantly refuse to let it die in your bastard attempt to sleaze a form of insult in in a way that you believe is immune to rebuttal because you're not directly talking to the other person? What would be there to change? Curious.
Kind of unrelated, but I also want to get some listening in but don't want to do it with anime (because I'm saving that for when I'm fluent). What's some good resources for listening practice?

Did you understand the meaning of the word and the context it was used in when you added it to Anki? Add whatever helps you understand the meaning of the word to Anki such as sentences, pictures and personal notes. Abstract words tend to benefit from more example usages and tangible objects from pictures. If you're having Kanji troubles then try RTK. Only do that if you're actually having trouble with kanji because it's an additional time sink. Just pay attention to your reviews and you'll notice what your particular problem is on a particular card.

don't delude yourself into thinking you can't remember without it.

Not every word deserves Anki. If you see 戦う on your Final Fantasy battle menu every 10 seconds, you don't need anki for that. However, if you consistently cannot remember that 戦 can and is often read as いくさ (mostly in news articles but whatever) Anki that shit. But if you know how to read it in 作戦 戦闘 戦争 don't waste your time on that.

Cutting back on Anki and reserving it for only what it most important is the key to success.

Also worth noting but "grammar" ultimately comes down to vocabulary past a certain point, as once you have the fundamentals down, there are just fancier/nuanced ways to say essentially the same things you already know in the basics. Those will come with time and exposure, but it's dumb to think of them as "grammar" strictly.

For example, お陰で・せいで are ultimately just nuanced ので ・から, which is not "grammar" but simply a new way to express a more specific form of that grammar.

Shit, we don't think of "due to" "because of" "because" "as a result of" as separate grammars, they're just different "vocabulary" to express the base idea.

Just take the training wheels off sometimes and relax.

Try to enjoy something without any crutches or help. If you don't "get" a word or can't read a Kanji, skip over it.

Stressing out hard over this isn't gonna make you better faster. There's a limit to how much you can improve on any given day, but I guarantee you'll remember the things you enjoyed far better than the things you were stressing or getting pissed over.

Relax. Be amazed when that one word/kanji/etc you have no reason to remember magically comes to you in that moment. I was reading the article about the 2つ頭がもってる蛇 yesterday and didn't have pics to go by because my work internet sucks, but somehow just "knew" ヘビ was what it was in that moment. That might be a Kanji I've ever seen two times and never even drilled in Anki, and I might not see it again for a year or more if I don't read anything related to snakes.

To deal with readings... Read.

At this point I'm not even sure how I can explain why I remember the readings for most of the Kanji, because when I learned 戦う I was playing Pokemon and, well, was doing that exact thing. I didn't need some kind of special help to remember that, 戦う is just 戦う. When I learned 戦闘 I remember thinking "oh this sucks I expected that shit to be たたかうsomething" but at the same time, dealt with it and later realized that 作戦 戦争 would have the same せん reading which made it easy to deal with. At the same time, I was just learning them as they became useful to me.

I don't see that kanji and break it down into parts to try to remember it. Even more abstract ones like 殺. Shit dude, I don't even have time to consider what those different parts might mean stuck together, that's just 殺す or 暗殺 or 殺人 or 殺害 or 必殺 or whatever else it is at any given time.

I guess bonus points IF a kanji can be taken to mean something else, like I'm eternally fascinated with 蜂蜜 because when I heard it for the first time I was like "no way... it couldn't be 蜂密? as in, 蜂の秘密?" And while I was not quite right, I wasn't exactly super wrong either. It's not like I depend on that to remember it, it's just... exactly what it is.

RTK users overthink this shit way more than is necessary.

Newbie question here
I'm exploring different Kanji learning methods to try and find what best works for me

I'm seeing a lot of people recommend RTK, though looking over it, it just seems like people are associating the english word with the Kanji... Is there some kind of benefit to this that i'm not understanding? Is this method of learning purely for reading Kanji and associating it with the english meaning?
I'm not really understanding the point of learning the Kanji but not learning the onyomi/kunyomi reading.

Again sorry for the babyshit newbie quesion. Literally just got done with memorizing the Kana on Sunday.

The idea is that you get the same kind of leg up on learning to read Japanese that a native Chinese speaker does. In practice the main benefit is that it does a good job of teaching you to break a kanji down into radicals. There's other systems out there that combine that with readings, but they cost money and are tied to web apps that can't easily be pirated.

Sadly this is the case. However, a decent number of anime does get dubbed into Mandarin, which is better than nothing I guess. Also, a lot of Chinese video games are absolute shit and rip offs of each other. Can't count how many shitty Chinese RPG/Strategy games set in the Three Kingdoms era exist. Also, not every major video game gets translated into Chinese, and the translations can be google translate quality.

Nintendo is planning to release the Switch in China in 2019, which will definitely help with having video games with Chinese translations you can trust. But it does suck donkey dick that the number of quality native materials for Chinese just doesn't even compare to Japanese's. C-Pop? Chinese anime? Don't count on it....

Mandarin is easier up front in terms of grammar, but you pay for it over the long run which isn't really so bad. More Hanzi to learn, but most of them are only read 1 way. More complex high-end grammar, but most of them aren't THAT bad and Japanese actually helps you prepare for it a bit by giving you a taste of how to cope with missing verb tenses. Even 了 isn't THAT difficult to grasp as it's really just a way, again, to deal with missing verb tenses (among other things but...)

Tones are a meme and are one of the most legitimate uses of Anki known to man.

Getting to native accent levels.... now that's tough nuts.

The trick is that you only have to set up the time context once at the start of a given topic and then you can drop back to basic verb aspect until you explicitly need to declare a new timeframe.

I think coming from English or other similar languages which are very temporally "precise" is frustrating to new learners of Chinese/Japanese because initially it can be hard to accept the context-sensitive nature of the languages.

I suppose that's the hardest part of any language though, acceptance. If you think it's dumb that kanji can be read in several different ways, you'll never be able to learn it. Same goes for people who feel it's impossible to remember 3000 different ones. Once you open your mind to it, it becomes easy.

If you're so good at Japanese then why don't you come up with an explanation on why に makes sense in passive sentences.
Oh wait, you can't, because you're just simply used to it so you don't question it.
I'm used to it too (I'm not as much of a beginner as you believe), but that doesn't magically fucking make it logical to use に in passive sentences to mark SOURCE. A good language should be logically sound and consistent, not arbitrary like this.

>grammatical functors take their meanings from the phrases they're in
>Elaborate
ever heard of particle verbs?
no, not japanese particles, english particles.
they're a class of phrasal verb where the normal meaning and grammatical function of the particle is discarded and instead becomes an elaboration or narrowing down of the meaning of the verb. "jump on", "turn on", "bring on", and "come on" all use "on", but they don't use the same meaning of it at all, the meaning comes from the phrase that the functor is in.

when you use prepositions, the meaning of the functor (in this case a preposition, not a particle) comes from the combination of the predicate outside of the functor and the argument of the functor itself. "he was running in the store" and "it will happen in due time" both use "in", but because of the specific context in which it is placed, the meaning is very different.

this isn't limited to isolated functors like prepositions and particles. it goes all the way to declensions. in "he and I" or "me and him", the meaning of the fusional accusative-declarative case functor (which changes the first person between "me" and "I", and the third person singular masculine between "him" and "he") is no longer literally that of a functor, because english assigns case to the phrase as a whole, after the listing is already done. instead, the case functor now presents the formality of the phrase, and there are rules about what ways in which it's malformed to construct the formality (i.e. you can't say "me and he" even though you can say "he and I" or even "him and I").

words and grammatical functions do not have definitions. they have uses.

に is used for anything and everything that has a case-like relationship to the predicate but cannot take the nominative or accusative case

agents, indirect objects, non-circumstantial locations, and atomic times are all case-like, and can even be a subject (nominative) or a direct object (accusative) with certain verbs

this is related to valency: you know how there are transitive and intransitive verbs, and intransitive verbs only accept a subject wheras transitive verbs accept both a subject and a direct object? the general concept of this is valency.

english has some verbs that have ZERO valency, like "rain". "it rains" doesn't actually have a subject. (this is excluding anthropomorphizations of the verb like "the clouds are raining on us")

english has some verbs that have an extra slot of valency. these are the verbs that accept an indirect object "i brought him a pear" has two objects, the direct one (pear) and indirect one (him).

there are even verbs in english that can allow more than a single indirect object!

に is used for everything that counts as a valent (non-adverbial) argument of the verb but is not allowed in, or gives the wrong meaning when placed in, the slots for the subject or direct object.

the agent of a japanese passive is a valent slot, and thus it uses に.
