There are simply too many words and too many kanji. I have a decent grasp on basic to intermediate grammar now, to the point where every sentence I "read" is looking up the words in between the grammar points. Over and over again. Rarely finally memorizing a word, rarely ever seeing the words I look up enough times to memorize them. I've reached true despair.

Imagine my reaction as I enthusiastically prepared myself to have, as always, a espectacular time in another fantastic DJT thread, and then suddenly I look at the catalog and see fucking this... 2 hours early, really? What is wrong with you? This isn't a damned race. Don't you know it is poor form to create a thread before the old one dies? Don't you feel bad for the person whose thread got knocked off the board, just because you're an impatient and reckless child? The pseudo-human (if you can even call him that) even removed the second line of the OP (essential in every respectable DJT thread). Unbelievable. Needless to say I was shocked and full of disgust. DJT culture has really declined.

Unless you are conversing with a bipolar child, this is completely untrue.

Yotsuba is absolutely shit for learning. For a beginner, Yotsuba speaking in her broken kana is a nightmare to sort through and it doesn't actually build any meaningful skills. Each adult uses a different kind of dialect that you won't see in actual writing, only in stylized children's stories. No. Kanji aren't words, specially in the case of RTK which is a mnemonic system for Remembering Kanji/Radicals that a lot of times make use of keywords that sometimes have barely if any relation to the definitions. Which is fine because it's not for learning words.

All the words in RTK are English words. You need to learn Japanese words and what they mean, and a lot of Japanese words are made up of multiple morphemes, and thus are represented with multiple kanji when written.

RTK is just teaching you to associate kanji with English words, and the English words happen to roughly correspond to the meaning of the morphemes that the kanjis represent.

To give a simple example:

犬 in RTK is dog. It represents the Japanese morphemes inu and ken. Inu is a word on its own which means dog, ken also means dog (but it is not always the case that all the morphemes represented by a kanji have the same meaning) and is used in multi-morpheme words like 猟犬 ryouken which means hunting dog.

This is true, but learning 2000 kanji is not learning 5000 words either.

It's gonna be miserable business at the start no matter what. A good 50% of learning written Japanese is dealing with the fact that the brain likes to protest against things it thinks are dumb, like the fact that 負ける・勝つ sound nothing like 勝負 despite using the same Kanji. Or the fact that すむ can be 住む and 済む (and 棲む to a lesser extent), or 読んでいる 呼んでいる meaning wildly different things despite sounding identical.

Of course, once you know the words, your brain usually defaults to the correct option because logic dictates that おい!課長をよんでっこい!has a zero % chance of being about READING the 課長 unless he's been mysteriously transformed into a book or something dumb.

On a long enough timeline, short of actually being Nukemarine himself, anyone who does not give up and consistently reads/plays/listens to/engages with any language they're learning will learn these things and work out these kinks. Sometimes it's gonna be quicker or slower depending on the day, what words you meet, etc.

>also how did you learn your native language
English? By listening to my parents, probably. That is when your brain is very malleable and the same can't be done when you are an adult. Once you're an adult you have to grind shit out. Babies are using cheat codes, so to speak. That's why if a baby fails to learn a language, they have a very hard time learning how to speak later in life.

>> No.19932469

>>19932409
The only advantage babies have is being in the optimal environment for learning an L1. Adults typically do a shit job of implimenting L2 in their lives and often opt for classes that give shit results. The critical period hypothesis (the basis of the idea that children learn L2 easier) has little if any real evidence to back it up. It's a prime example of correlation not equalling causation.

>> No.19932551

The reason adults typically dont learn languages is because they dont find any reading/listening material compelling enough to consume for 1000s of hours.

I don't recall saying children can learn a second language easier, unless you consider their first language to be secondary because they start with nothing. My point was that children can learn simply by observation, and this somewhat extends into early adolescence (I knew some really young foreign kids that learned English by watching TV), but for adults you don't have that kind of advantage. Part of it is external responsibilities, but it is mostly just due to our brains being fully developed.

Agreed. I've tried teaching kids and they can learn quick if they focus but they usually can't focus nearly as good as an adult can. I add sentences because learning kanji without even a sentence to go along with it is not very ideal, and yomichan doesn't usually do a good job with them.. So I have to get an example sentence and paste it in. Then I trim out all the extra nonsense because yomichan puts way too many definitions that are just the same thing. If there's no audio I have to add a TTS. I personally also include a picture because that helps me remember things but that is certainly not required, just an extra step I take.

Pic is what yomichan does for me. It would honestly be faster to manually create them, the only reason to use it as far as I'm concerned is the audio that comes with it.

admittedly i did somewhere over 1500 cards with definitions before i started doing that, but i don't think it matters. if you know the reading, checking the dictionary is much quicker when you need to (excepting for text hooking and mouseover dictionaries but they aren't always available and they can become a crutch because of their ease of use). and checking the dictionary when you have a (new) usage context in mind seems to me to be more beneficial to long-term memory than recalling it during flash cards.
just my perspective, do what seems best and make your own tweaks.
