I just started yesterday and have powered through Hiragana. I can ace a Hiragana flashcard test no problem, but when it comes to writing or visualizing the Hiragana from memory, I draw a blank. Should I spend more time on Hiragana where I can visualize the Hiragana without flash cards before moving on to Katakana? Or will I get better at it the more I practice/read?

Sorry for the basic bitch question, I know most of you are light-years ahead of me. Just want to make sure I don't mess up.

If your vocab is at an intermediate+ level and you can handle lots of kana-only words, it's actually not terrible since it's fairly text-heavy for something this side of Final Fantasy.

The grammar doesn't really do anything spectacular. Might throw you for all of 5 minutes if you're not used to ぬ・ず endings, negative volitional, and dialectical honorifics. Game has like 100 different kanji in it tops due to shitty font resolution which is why I stress a decent grasp of vocab.

Friend, you should always try to "produce" because that's one of the only ways you are going to get results, as far as writing/speaking goes.
This is the same reason japanese people rarely can speak english despite taking it in school; their system moves from one to the other, from grammar to writing to listening, ect. without any form of integration. Integrated learning is perhaps the best way to learn a new language, and you are severely hindering yourself if you think you will wait before you "produce".

I did say "kinda". He showed that clip of Kaufmann saying how looking up "get" is useless because it'll have 8 or 9 definitions. That's harmful because the average
retard watching that will think "better not look shit up then" instead of "I'll use context to decide which meaning is being used in what I'm reading and only learn that single one for now".
And then the guy goes on to say that if you look up everything you'll take "about half an hour to get through one page" but for the same amount of time TV "blast you with far more of the language". That necessarily implies that passive learning > active learning. Which is lazy thinking. It's not like you can't look up something, try to remember the spirit of the definition, and still let your brain process the information passively after that.

Umm, because it's new words, in new order, in new interpretations combined with a new writing system. The process to learn it is simple, but getting your brain to understand it fluently (comprehension not translation) takes thousands of hours of immersion.

So stop whacking off to how simple Japanese is and start watching raw anime.

If you ignore the diversity of kanji Japanese is far from having the hardest writing system, in fact I would argue it is pretty simple, at least compared to something like Arabic.

Kana should take you a month. And you should add Core 2K and Yotsuba to that list.

Within that year, you should have 2K vocab words, Tae Kim, and Vol 1 of Yotsuba done.

Before you start a mining deck btw, I recommend dedicated Kanji study for all 2000 kanji. Through rote memorization. As well as the Anki deck for Tae Kim. You can do all that in a year, and then you'll have basic access to the language which will make reading that much easier. Yotsuba should be your starting platform. The guided vol 1 with the anki decks and vocab lists will prepare you for flying solo with the remaining 11 volumes. From there you can start reading whatever you like.

Core 2K alone will take you a long time, so pace yourself.

Really? Cause I'm about to. I started back in March. I have:

-All Kana mastered.
-1500 vocab from Core 2K
-500 kanji through Obenkyo (about to start a deck)
-Tae Kim read (about to start the deck)
-Chapter 1 of Yotsuba read with relative ease

Basically, my plan for the next bit is to blitz the remaining 500 Core 2K words. Going at 50 a day now to have them done by the start of next month. Then going for a tripple whammy of doing a dedicated Kanji deck to get at least 1000 kanji learnt by Dec (I got 500 already). And the Tae Kim Anki deck done by then too. All the while having all of Yotsuba Vol 1 read and the reading guide done by Dec.

I mean, that'd be 9 mo's in. But I literally started Yotsuba last week, and found it rather easy to read overall.

Also, I think output on that list is too late.

I started with output right from the start. Kanji study should have you writing them again and again, and looking up words in the dictionary that use them.

Yes, it's called "learn each word"

Eventually you will get a sense for it but there will always be exceptions. For the most part, it comes down to "which would be easiest to say" and you may be able to guess using that logic. Example, saying はつひょう is really a pain in the ass, or ちょうおんは, or しゅつはつ (ok maybe that one's not a pain but still) ろくひゃく vs ろっぴゃく as well. Just less mouth movement to use the っぴゃく・っぴょう・っぱ versions.

>the resolution of text can also make games a fuckfest of readability

Porn VNs do actually have better focus on making readable text since they are supposed to be read, so that's a better a choice, but also any game made for modern systems should work better since they don't have to fuck up their text to fit on a 240p screen or anything like that.

See above. In the beginning there is just too much to focus on since you don't know anything. It's best to just focus on a few things at the time and ignore the rest. Otherwise you'll take like 30 minutes on a single page which is neither productive nor fun.

You start out by abusing the fuck yomichan and focus entirely on grammar, don't bother trying to remember words, just mindlessly use it. Then as you start to get a better grasp of the grammar you reduce your dependence on yomichan.

Start by focusing on words you encounter often, just a handful at the time. As you get better and better you'll be able to add new ones. If you just read everyday it'll work like natural SRS.

Do the same with kanji too, focus on a few of them at the time. I usually pick one with few radicals or one that's made up out of other kanji I already know. Then associate them with a single unique Japanese word(one I'm focusing on or already know). Every time you encounter it recall the word you associated it with and its most common readings. Again do this until you know it well enough.

Don't spend too much time on things you don't know. If you don't get it after a few minutes just move on to the next sentence/paragraph. It's not like kids understand everything they're reading or watching, they just don't care and have fun nonetheless.

I'm not saying you should do it like this. Maybe this is a horrible way to learn languages or maybe I'll eventually hit a wall using this method. But it works better than anything I've tried before and I'm actually having fun. So I'll keep doing it like this. I especially notice how much I've improved in places where I can't use yomichan so it's not like I'm lying to myself about improving.

"I've heard that you've learnt some Chinese characters."
"No, no, I've learnt to write all the required characters."
"So you can write all of them?"
"Yes, I can"
They put me in front of a blackboard with some chalk and said, "Write the character for inu."
And I said, "I'm sorry, I don't know what inu means."
"So you've been here for 2 months and you don't know the word for 'dog'?"

I said "Sorry, but I didn't get to vocabulary yet. I learnt the characters through English words. So give me an English word."

So she explained to the other teachers who were there, and somebody threw out "cow." So I wrote the character for cow. And the same for "cat." And they all started talking amongst themselves in Japanese. And I said, "What's wrong? Is the character wrong?" And they replied, "No, it's correct, but you're not supposed to know it because it's not on the official list." I explained that there were a lot of them that weren't on the list but they were easy to learn, so I just added them anyway. So they started testing me; they might ask me to write the word "sad," and I would write the character that I had given the meaning "sorrowful" to, as there are many overlaps in the characters. Following that, they asked me to come back after classes had finished that evening.

So I went back at 5:30, and all the teachers were sitting there. The one lady who spoke English said, "We've discussed your case very carefully, and there's about seventy years of combined teaching experience in this room, and it's the opinion of everyone in here that you are doing yourself a big disservice by studying this way and you should come to class." And I asked why it would be a disservice to learn the characters. And they said, "It's short-term memory. You have a photographic memory, and you'll discourage the other students who don't have one."

If you can speak English, you can speak Chinese. The grammar is, at its core, remarkably English-like without having to deal with verb tenses at all (think of how you deal with "future" tense in Japanese and apply that to any and all past/present/future events), you can usually structure things similar to English and get decent results in terms of word order.

That said, at higher levels, due to how "free flowing" and ostensibly loose Chinese grammar would seem, word order can indeed be very important. Also people seem to have problems with the concept of 了 but they're just memeing, enough exposure to its usage clears it right up. Mostly.

Like I said, pitch isn't just a "feeling" thing like you're trying to push it to be. It's a very real concept that's essential to understanding the Japanese language. Pitch accent is constantly mentioned in media and even casual conversations. A good example of this is the こ↑こ↓ yajuu meme. Not that I'd expect you to know it, of course.

"Please come to the faculty office after class." I asked the student.

"It was so sad, seeing everyone make fun of one of their fellow classmates," I thought to myself.
"I'm going to have to give them a stern lecture when the boy isn't around."
"For now, though, there is a much larger problem to take care of."
I thought about the boy who put in more hard work than any of his classmates, but still couldn't grasp even the basic concepts of Japanese. I knew I had to get him on the right track. And most importantly, I knew that I couldn't let him feel stupid for wasting months of his life that he will never get back.

The student arrived shortly after I gathered the other teachers and told them the plan.
"We've discussed your case very carefully, and there's about seventy years of combined teaching experience in this room, and it's the opinion of everyone in here that you are doing yourself a big disservice by studying this way and you should come to class."
The boy responded exactly how I had hoped, "why it would be a disservice to learn the characters?"
"It's short-term memory. You have a photographic memory, and you'll discourage the other students who don't have one," I told the student.

if someone uses "record" as a verb but pronounces it as if it were the noun you probably know exactly what was wrong with what you just heard even if you didn't consciously know that english has initial-stress-derived nouns. pitch accent isn't grammar, there's not a lot of complexity to it and any native speaker has almost as much intuitive understanding of it as they do the vowel and consonant sounds.

no native speakers of any language have an automatic thorough understanding of their own language outside of what they learn in school. like how many of you can explain to me the precise differences between Japanese "と/って" and English "that"? why can I say "「やめろ」ってあの人が言っている" but not "that man said that 'stop!'"? chances are that any given person in this thread would be able to explain why って is okay there but will have to think about "that" a bit more to get at any kind of explanation, and think harder still to contrast the two.
just because native speakers don't "know" about something the way someone who reads it out of a textbook does doesn't mean it's any less real. language knowledge is weird. stop making excuses not to learn things.

You need to gauge the relationships in the first place. If you've been in the circle for X months, and the chick is childhood friends with the core group, you aren't getting away from it no matter what, and it's time to move on.

At the very least, the basic way to play off the situation would be to pretend that she was the one coming off too hot, and when you took a step back she got upset and started spreading rumors.

But that's pretty hard to do if someone sees you walking around with flowers like a good cuck, so like >>19917699, maybe there was no winning move by the point he managed to creep her out.

She probably slept with another dude because they were never officially dating. You know they weren't dating if not single person even knew they were supposidly together for a few months.
He also got caught in a few lies, he says they dated for a few months then said she had only been there for a month.
If you believe anything this guy says you're an idiot. He tried to fuck the hottest girl and pressured his way into it and got mad when she out smarted the shit out of him.

why would he have to threaten to expose her as a prostitute in order for her to feel that he could expose her as a prostitute? i mean that's a pretty big deal to people, and people would probably be curious why they were no longer speaking or dating or something so either way you would expect him to say something eventually.
>He also got caught in a few lies, he says they dated for a few months then said she had only been there for a month.
you're probably confused and/or he worded himself poorly. i'm not saying to take his word. i just don't get why people go the roundabout way of making their point by calling him a liar (which in itself is a lie since we don't know) instead of reiterating that we don't have the full story.

I've finished rtk and I can't figure out what the fuck to read. I DL'd 3 vn's that didnt work. I've been reading the news everyday but thats hard asf. I'm having the most success with childrens books and comments on youtube. I feel like I need to get lost in a good game or VN but I'm new to that.

Whilst on that topic does anyone know any good jap only dictionaries? I don't want to rely on jisho anymore. I've been using the one above for a bit and was wondering if there's a better one
