She waited, halfway paying attention to the maid walking out of the room. The three men stationed outside were making small talk with the girl. As expected, their coats were padded, enough to slow the edge of a knife. There were baselards sheathed on their hips instead of longswords. Wise, considering the narrow width of the corridors.

In this situation, it was better to dictate the pace by which things occurred.

She turned the corner and purposefully strode up to meet them.

They had been waiting in a semi-lounging state, leaning against the walls. When they spotted her, all three moved to attention, despite her outfit.. Only the prime minister's appointed maid, Clarice, was allowed to be here after all. "This is the wro—" the first one started.

She stepped up her pace. In the narrow corridor, she darted to one side, jumping into the air and rebounding off the wall. She leapt clear over the speaking man and came down onto the larger second with her elbow, striking just above the collarbone. As the big man toppled forward, she brought her leg up, smashing her knee into an extended chin. The blow snapped the man's head back, his neck breaking.

The man she had bypassed spun and the third man moved on his heels, neither one stumbling.

One second.

Even before the first man had fallen completely, she moved onto the second, who was spinning toward her assault. She ducked under a right slash. The man overstepped. She moved up to his left, jabbing a knife into his head from behind the right ear.

Two seconds.

The last man was rushing towards her, trying to use his larger size to pin her down. She took two steps on the deck, two more along the wall at an angle, then rebounded completely inverted from the ceiling above the head of her target. The man died before his eyes had even fully journeyed upward to react—she drove the knife into the top of his head, flipping forward and wrenching the weapon from the man's body as violently as possible.

She looked at the bodies. One of them was twitching but only momentarily before she smashed the end of a boot into the man's windpipe.

Three seconds.

She decided she was two seconds too slow.

There was too great a distance between them to dispatch her target as she did with the others. This room was also not ideal for her style of combat.

"I said—" the man began.

Sakuya charged in toward the ghoul, grabbing one of the tablecloths as she passed, causing a din as plates and silverware clattered and crashed in her wake. She lifted the white material the moment she passed within a half-dozen meters of the target, a curtain between them. The cloth then went quickly from vertical to horizontal, like an open umbrella pulled violently closed. It shot forward, directly at the target, a bed sheet ghost bent on terrorizing the enemy.

The ghoul knocked the sheet aside with the back of his hand. He had seen through the diversion, waited for her to move laterally or leap in for an overhead strike while his attention should have been on the cloth, propelled forward by a thrown knife. A ghoul could easy see and avoid danger, could dodge a bullet even after it was fired, so one knife was no threat to him, no matter how it was concealed—

A knife embedded itself into the vampire's throat from below.

With the energy from her run and the smooth surface of the floor beneath her, Sakuya fell to her shins, her knees bent, arching backward like the most extreme limbo contestant. Her momentum slid her down at the feet of her opponent, her action momentarily obscured by the flying tablecloth and the ghoul’s attention to the sides and above—an action that would have been defeated had he focused downward on the projectile like a normal human might have.

Blood spat out onto the floor and into the fringes of her hair as the knife pierced the ghoul’s jugular.

Sakuya continued her slide between the legs of her target, arms reaching out to hook the man at the ankles. Bunching all of her strength into the motion, she sprang from her knees upward, lifting her arms above her head, flinging the Apostle so his heels flew into the air and his head flew into the floor.

Reflex had the man flinching away from the floor, a slight angle of adjustment that brought the hilt of the knife into the floor first.

Without waiting to see the ghoul's condition, Sakuya knelt onto the man's back, grabbed the hilt of the knife, and brought it back up and around.

Who is Sakuya? We know who she is now, but the hints about her past suggest that she could have been the stuff penny dreadfuls are made of. She's wrapped in a bundle of serial killer references, and early on mentioned that most of her human interaction involved a knife in her hand. She looks mostly normal, but then they usually do, don't they? That's how they get ya. Yet for the moment she's content to play servant girl to a winged, fanged brat.

It's a symbiotic relationship, I think. They are both, in their own ways, monsters trying to play at being human.

Sakuya willingly puts herself on a leash, submitting to Remilia's whims and serving as her head maid. Her knack for knifeplay is channeled into home defense (or food preparation), and not expressed through... other acts. Her easily-abused control over time is focused on making up for the fairy maids' inability to keep the house clean. And her morality is clearly established - preying upon humans is only acceptable when her mistress is hungry.

Why is it important that Sakuya's mistress is a vampire? Why couldn't Sakuya get these results by joining a military or something? Probably because working for a vampire provides a good contrast to reinforce your own humanity. Sakuya's no stranger to human yet ended up the way she is, but it's easier to notice when you're becoming more like a blood-sucking devil and turning back from that route.

As for Remi, she gets a hell of a competent underling to command, and a similar psychological benefit. She can fit into a master-servant role rather than that of predator-prey, a role that places limitations on her just as it does on Sakuya - for what proper lady goes around terrorizing the countryside when she has underlings to do that for her? Sakuya serves as another example of humanity Remilia can imitate, not to mention another kindred spirit, in her mansion of youkai and devils pretending to be a normal household.

I would say it's the opposite reason. Remilia employs Sakuya because she isn't evil enough to kill innocent people by her own hand just for sustenance, hence why she doesn't recoil when exposed to the cross. Sakuya has no moral quandaries and is willing to kill, being judged as a strong candidate to being sent into hell by the yamas.

The goal is to kill.
Ever play an online multiplayer game before? If someone steals your kill, you're bound to be more than a little upset, you're bound to kill the person who stole your kill if you really wanted that kill. An easy way to combat this is to kill anyone and everyone who might steal your kill so instead of killing one person, you kill that one person in addition to anyone else with the intent of killing your acclaimed target. But this can end in simple genocide by that logic, so everyone is a target at maximum. Removing the whores from the scene eliminates any competition AND adds a few points to your kill score before eliminating the target.
The goal is to kill the target. It's just that simple.

Probably not.
Knowing ZUN, he probably isn't going to get many EoSD characters too involved considering ther stance but also how popular they are despite being 16 or so years in the making.
Reimu and Marisa are understandable as reoccurring characters, but people still love Sakuya, Remimi, Flan, and the others to a great extent. Too much spotlight and they'll probably dominate the spotlight for a while.
Not to mention it is probably best we know little about Sakuya. She is a mysterious girl after all. Let your mind roam free, create your own headcannon backstory for the cutesy Head Maid!

Might be off topic, but I find it to be semi related.
I can go on about how much I love Sakuya, but i hate lovey dovey stuff.
I hate it.
I just can't stand it. I dont want to see it.
