What is Omake Overhaul, and how does it compare to + Custom?

Omake is an Elona fork like Plus, and Overhaul is a fork of Omake (like how with Angband you have forks of Zangband). Comparing the two, Plus added new story chapters and continents and changed some basic gameplay (most notably making stat and skill potentials easier to increase), and Omake/Overhaul sticks much more closely to vanilla Elona while still adding many new things.

How to make good quick money in Omake Overhaul? Money is tedious to get in OO.
Making money in Plus was easy with cooked food/WasteArt/etc.
In OO, the only thing I've got going for good money is quests/salary/Prostitution. I can also sell equipment, cargo, and drops of body parts, but the money gained from those is small.

I mean Base Elona is the game.

Elona+ is a dedicated continuation of the game, with has Custom for added functionality/translation/QoL and now has (G) which works with custom to rebalance/undo changes made by the later developments of Elona+.

(Not 100% on the Omake part since I haven't played it myself.)

Omake is a jap mod expanding the base Elona game and improving it rather than building on it.

Omake Overhaul is a more ambitious continuation of Omake that has an english translation.

Let's talk about Elin! It was obviously undergoing rapid changes, so the different versions are quite different, but I'd just like to hear the general opinion on what could be seen.

What was your opinion on the art style? Did you prefer the 2D or 3D characters?
I personally thought the art was really nice. The backgrounds and objects are exactly what I'd imagine an HD remake of Elona would look like. On the characters I'm kind of split. I thought the 3D characters look really good, but the 2D were still more charming. However, I feel like the potential benefits of 3D characters like easier customization could outweigh the better look of 2D.
Animated characters also seem potentially very nice, though I'm not really sure how well that'd really go with roguelike gameplay.

In some videos the action was turn based while in others it was real time. We didn't really see any real combat, but what are your thoughts on this?
I really like real time in the town. Makes it feel really alive. Turn based is fine, but it definitely doesn't give the same feeling. I really like the traditional roguelike gameplay, so I'd be sad to see it traded in for more 'modern'. I guess real time gameplay would lend itself well to a potential multiplayer mode, though I don't really want that if it's at the cost of traditional roguelikeness.
My ideal version would probably be real time default switching to turn based when in combat/dungeons, though full on turn based is probably the most realistic.

Anything else that was interesting to you?
I guess I personally really liked the UI. For some reason it has a really nice, comfy and nostalgic feeling to me while also looking pretty clean.

Changing the material of armor to obsidian gives it some chaos resistance (## I think). I assume it's going to reduce the penalty. Otherwise you could also change the material of some other part of your armor or just eat a a ton of chaos eyes to train your chaos resistance.

The farthest sea looks pretty interesting, but its obviously going to be pretty different from the original Elin and Elona.
The artstyle is somewhat disappointing, but it's kind of a given due to what killed the original Elin in the first place. The UI is also a total programmer UI. I can understand that he probably didn't want to rip it from Elin in case that project ever gets revived, but it's still pretty rough.
The music is pretty great. It was also a high point in the video for the original Elin for me.
In regards to combat, the one that's going to be in farthest sea seems pretty interesting, though I'm not really sure in what direction it's going to go
I'm definitely looking forward to it, but I'd be pretty sad if the original Elin was permanently shelved.

It took me so many days of trial and error before I made a character that didn't die to instakill traps, hungry ghosts and acid slimes, and I'm still only level 9

It's not a good idea to do permadeath until you have the hang of the game, you still get penalties for dieing after level ten on Essential.
Honestly you'll have a pretty hard time of things if you play blind, some people like that but it's not for everyone.
I played blinded and gave up, didn't get back into it until a few years later.

Read the wiki and ask for advice, keep hold of bottles of water, potions of potential/speed upper, good to have a stock of cure corruption and mutation too.

Take it easy for the first 10-20 levels, do simple quests, grind puppy cave, reinforce your/your pet's armour and weapons a few levels at the blacksmith.

Try to have fun.

You can't wish for deeds, and even if you could, you can afford a shop deed after like 15 minutes of grinding for money. And you don't have shit to sell that early anyway. Feats are permanent boosts, they're worth it. And it's worth to stock up on experience of kumiromi, you can use one every 10 levels indefinitely, and you stop getting feats naturally at level 50.

They give a decent bit of money to your payments, though lately I've only been grabbing the figurines of unique npcs and putting all cards in my deck for the witch quest, also unique figurines are typically worth much more to the museum rating. Fossils can also go into museums now, no idea how much they affect the museum rating yet.

Museums will probably cost more until you have a substantial collection of figurines ready to go though.

Little balls are used to capture little girls who spawn when big daddies are killed. I recommend you always carry some one you, because if a little girl dies your save is forever tagged, and it will lower the chances of you meeting big daddies in the future.

Custom and Custom-G both provide their source code, and Custom-G includes instructions for compiling. Use a diff tool like WinMerge to compare source.hsp and gsource.hsp and you shouldn't have too much trouble adding hydration back.

What's a good way to train magic if you're garbage at it? I'm level 29 and I've only done gardening so far, so I'm not really sure how to transition into a functional build.

E+, I assume? Spamming cheap spells like Short Teleport and Magic Dart works well. As for surviving dungeons, take the "knowledge of magical plants" feat if you don't have it already. If your Gardening is over 30, you'll gain the Violent Garden special action. It's a great AoE attack for weakening stronger enemies, with damage calculated on Learning and Gardening. Its bind effect was nerfed in a recent version, but it should still be useful at your level. If you're really weak, consider training Mining so you can tunnel through dungeon walls and avoid getting swarmed in open areas.

The level of your character and the level of anything else, dungeons included, really don't tell you much. You do the level of content you feel comfortable doing, not what you'd assume is appropriate level content. Mainly because, as you've discovered, some level 29 characters are gardeners.

Just go into a really low level dungeon and poke around. There is no reason not to simply leave if you feel threatened. Keep going into deeper and deeper dungeons and find your comfort level, or challenge level if you want to go to the other end of the 'doable zone'.

By the way, are there any other music packs apart from the ones in the pastebin? the final fatasy and granblue-based ones are all over the place in terms of quality, volume, and appropriateness, and the Wild Arms one is very out of date now, unfortunately.

Is Magic device useful to a dedicated melee fighter? I mean, obviously attack rods give ranged/AoE attacks, but so does the Throwing skill. The wiki mentions E+ making potions work better, but how much better? I don't want clutter skills but I don't want to massively cut my own throat by missing out on 2000% potion multipliers or whatever.

IIRC, potions of potential can raise all potentials when blessed, while blessed scrolls of growth give more potential in a handful of random stats. PoPs are also more common, I believe. They start showing up around shop level 60-70. Seconding the herb farming suggestion, especially since you'll also make some extra cash while farming. Also look into pet-made breakfasts, if you don't have that set up yet.

Lots of ways, though the fastest (and most expensive) is blessed potential potions. Seems that due to the cost-prohibitive nature of these, however, it seems the way "ano wants it" is for you to slowly raise your potentials. This can be done with breakfast, picnic baskets, rare herbs (alraunia for example,) speed uppers, etc.

I'm not the best person to ask, though. Try googling the Elona discord and using the search or something.

Protip: Speed uppers and hermes blood are generally considered easier to get than potions of potential, so a lot of people like to speedcheese by training traveling/swimming and guzzling speedpots like no tomorrow. Don't forget to raise your speed independent of your stats. Although it IS possible to raise your speed too high, to the point where it seems that the world has stopped around you. This can be a very inconvenient thing.

I'm not very good either, but I picked FARMER then got COOKING pretty quickly.

It's a grind early on, just feed yourself and make your LITTLE GIRL fight and get strong, find out what scroll is ORACLE, NAME or KNOWLEDGE and farm them from the puppy cave then trade them with NPCs for some decent gear you can give to little girl/yourself.

Buy more skills, TRAVELLING, SENSE QUALITY, WEIGHTLIFTING, LOCKPICKING will be used all the time and are good to get started early and don't cost $$ or materials to level.

Cooking really is a great way to make money, every 100 cooking gives you an extra dish so with 200 you'd make three out of every fish or vegetable you'd use.
And fishing works really well with it, if you have custom-g you can buy the <super lure> and with it becoming rich is only a matter of time. And finding it by yourself is unlikely, people have played for over 100 hours without seeing it.

Closest thing to a major change is that the localization of "イークの首領『ルードルボ』" (Īku no shuryō “rūdorubo”) has been changed from "yeek" to "<Rudolfo> the yeek chief". So now you can tell which "figurine of yeek" is the unique's by the item name.

You can find them in dungeons or buy them from magic vendors. Occasionally they're a quest reward, especially for book deliveries. You can also get spells through dreams, but it's not reliable.

You find spell books, you will need to read them, this uses up the charges the book has and gives you stocks for the specific spell (you need spell stock and mana to cast)

If you have pets you can a "reading party" ability at some stage, that makes it easier to read books because some pets' literacy skill is added to yours, plus you won't have failures give you negative effects.

You can use the Call Familiar spact to make them sit out if they're in a tight spot. Make sure they have enough gold to keep their potentials up so they grow strong. If you have the custom mod, custom ai can make them much more useful.

Teach them pickpocketing. Eventually they'll become self-sufficient. They can pick up gold from the floor, so I usually have them do that for large stacks in dungeons.
Refined rubynus, emerald, and diamond from the pot for fusion sell for a lot more than the base items, so make them and give to your pet to sell. And there's evo-chat, but that's not viable in early game.
