The number of sex scenes in it wasn't as much of a problem as their quality and length. I've only read Arcueid route until about when her vampire instincts start to awaken, making her unable to stop herself from killing Shiki
I have nothing against sex scenes as such, the problem is how poorly they fit in at that point and their content that doesn't feel romantic or natural at all, just prolonged. The lenght of the actual scene between Shiki and Arcueid just didn't work for me. It didn't need to be so long. It affected the overall experience with the game negatively.
I don't think the romantic tension in the game would work as well without sex scenes with some plausability, but that was an overkill.

My biggest problem is that I always feel a need to complete any story I'm presented with. This means going through all routes and never skipping any scene. Which means reading through uninteresting sex scenes with characters I don't like.

First, I have no sympathy for you OP, because you are playing an ERO visual novel. It's supposed to have sex in it, and it's supposed to be the way it is. YOU are the the idiot for playing such a VN if you don't like sex in the way.

HOWEVER, there are some great VNs that have no sex in them, but still have compelling stories and such. One that sticks out as a nice short classic is Planetarian. I recommend that whole-heartedly. I loved that one, and it was the first non-ero VN I'd played.

It's already been mentioned, but OP should definitely play True Remembrance. Although I haven't played many VNs, it is most definitely my favorite and you won't be disappointed. It is a great VN. There is also no sex to ruin it for you.
