I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

“Sure. Children are the best teachers.”

Now, that sounds reasonable. Everybody nodded. But it isn’t reasonable. It sounds good, but it’s actually nuts. Children are the worst teachers. They make no damn sense.

You know, over the years, I’ve asked many people how they learned Japanese, and their answers consistently fall into one of two categories. They either describe a systematic method pursued diligently over the course of several years, or they make up some convenient bullshit because they don’t really want to respond to the question. I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

The improvement is gradual. You won't notice it over short periods. Your subconscious mind will just gradually get better at parsing syllables, separating words, and recognizing vocabulary that you didn't realize you knew. That's why it takes months really. You won't notice right away, you won't even notice while in the middle of it, but you're definitely improving so long as you don't space out and think about Doritos instead of listening.

Listening also helps with your reading speed, ironically enough. Sure, you KNOW how the syllables sound, but having constant reinforcement means less background calculations for your mind to make when your eyes glance over kana. You'll learn how the syllables flow into one another better so can breeze through sentences easier even if you don't understand what the sentence means, just because you've listened so much.

Grammar also sticks better when you hear it in use rather than read it, since when you're reading you're prone to stopping and overthinking the anatomy of a sentence where as when you listen you're forced to take it at the speaker's pace and their intonations/emphasis can help you understand context where silent text wouldn't. Like I said, it won't be immediate, you'll have very minor "aha, I know what that means" moments that stand out, but you'll slowly build bridges in your mind.

I know, and every time I notice "Oh, it's X from Y" it kills my immersion, and from that point on every time that character speaks I can't help but think about character X from show Y who's voiced by the same person. Just did my first day in Anki, noticed that the guide said word reviews should be about 10 times the amount of new cards you learned later(so about 200 per 20 new cards). No reason why it shouldn't be working if these fields are present. I haven't used Windows in a long time so I can't really remember how it works, but is it possible that you've muted Anki in your audio settings?

Anyhow, check your collection.media folder (not sure where it is on Windows, sorry) and ensure all the audio files are in there. If not, I'm pretty sure there's a download out there somewhere for all the Core media which you should be able to just copy-paste into your collection.media folder.

He claims in his AJATT journey video that he became disillusioned with Japan while he was there and came to hate the country as a result of his experience, but this blog post pours cold water all over that claim. This post is clearly made after he got back from Japan, yet here he is still fondly reminiscing over it:

I said this to myself 8 years ago, bro. Then I abruptly got kicked out, had to be homeless for a bit, and had to work hard from the bottom (fucking counting pallets of product in a warehouse) to eventually a cushy office job in the inventory systems management team when they eventually realized my talents were wasted doing grunt work. It took this long, but I'm finally getting back into Japanese since I don't have to work 70 hour work weeks anymore, worked on my depression, and got a fujo gf who wants me to translate doujin for her.

Good thing is that I retained a lot more than I thought I did despite not actively learning for so long. Guess the fact that I still watched anime and at least read Japanese tweets for news here and there helped keep things from falling out?

I'd go into the office to drop my paperwork, look at the mismanagement and disarray around, and blatantly just say things like
>You can just have Excel automate that for you, and we'd have less paperwork to file away and waste time with if we kept documents electronically instead

In the least smart-ass way I could. They already had interest in me because I put Japanese on my resume (literally hired me over someone else just because of that, since it "showed initiative to go above and beyond" or whatever) so from there it was simple. They moved me from the graveyard shift to the morning shift, and while I was still checking pallets I was also utilizing my basic programming knowledge and excel skills to make VB scripts and such for them. Eventually they tasked more and more of my work to other people and gave me more of a focus on just seeing what dumb shit could be improved.

Then I just flat out got a manager position, but I'm not too much of a people person so I hated the fuck out of it. After a while the other departments were begging me to leave my department for theirs (lots of cross-functional email teams I was a part of, so I was pretty well networked within the company on a national level) and one of them decided to put their money where their mouths are and offer me my current job. It was a long climb up the corporate ladder, but now I just spend my days as pseudo sysadmin for the building. That mostly means I get to study Japanese at work, shitpost on 4chan, and then every 30 minutes or so have a quick look at the systems we use to make sure there aren't issues.

tl;dr - It was fucking luck. Get in a shitty operation with a bunch of old fucks who type 3 words per minute and blow their fucking minds with Computer 101 high school level shit. Also put Japanese on your fucking resume because it's somehow impressive even if it isn't fluent?

I'm sure there are a ton of English sayings/euphemisms that you use or hear all the time but don't exactly know the origins of. Thinking too hard on them won't really improve your understanding of the language, just try ingraining the meaning of it in this particular context. I personally don't know WHY it's more feminine, but I just know it is since I only really see girls utilize it in material I consume. It also just inherently "feels" feminine to me on a mental level, probably because I don't think too much about it and just built up that understanding naturally.

So completely random example sentences that are similar to these would be helpful but creating a list of these would take time.

1. These characters put together make this sound.

By already knowing the readings, I eliminate the first thing on the list and cut the mental burden of acquiring vocab through reading. Theoretically.

sounds like your entire problem was with definitions, and you don't mind focusing on readings
after i took a break from anki i started mining with the intention of only using anki for readings
i have fairly unedited definitions on the backs of the cards in case i want to check during my review (which i'm still unsure about) but i'm happy with my progress from leaving the meaning to exposure, and it's much quicker to check a dictionary while reading if i can type the word
i consider it a compromise between learning without anki, and spending less of my reading time trying to look shit up
it also helps me keep my daily anki time very low so i don't get burnt out before i do any real japanese, and it's probably closer to ideal usage of SRS to recall one piece of information rather than multipe

ESL-kun here, i'm in the top 2% at the very least of my age group in English proficiency and my age group is pretty ok when it comes to English so i'm pretty ok as well and i've thought about how i learned English and if i could apply that to Japanese and i've gotta say, i've got no fucking idea how i learned English, i honestly feel like i've always known it.
I mean yeah i can apply logic or whatever and come to the conclusion that as a gamer kiddie i learned through immersion and production and whatever sophisticated terms there are but i've got no idea how to apply that to jap so i suppose this whole reflection was utterly useless, i've gotta find a new way to learn this new language, how annoying, and to think i might never know Japanese as well as i know English, really depressing desu.

matt recommends learning the language primarily through listening because he thinks if you learn mostly through reading in the beginning that you'll damage your accent. so if you weren't going to be reading, he wanted you to acquire some sort of proficiency in kanji recognition by doing RTK so that you'll make reading easier on yourself when you start it months later.

but then his followers' mature retention rate started dropping for RTK cards because english keywords don't make for a strong connection in the long term. they need to be supplemented by actual japanese. the reason RTK worked for him is because he knew japanese, so even if he forgot his story, he could recall how to write the kanji based on the fuzzy image in his head. now he just recommends lazy kanji.
