if anyone can identify this shrine I would appreciate it, I'd like to see if it or the vicinity are available to browse on streetview.
I forgot where I saved it from that would reveal its name or location, and twitter filenames cannot be 'backtraced' to the user who posted it.

Also, I thought about your question a bit more and I guess I have a hypothesis you can think about.

It could be that you mentally associate derelict buildings in your own country with poverty / crime / generally being dodgy as hell and unaesthetic.

While the Japanese buildings are - as the population shrinks and declines and whatever - a product of a bygone era and in most cases quite literally abandoned, and there is a(n admittedly romanticised) sense that we are seeing the process of things decaying with the passage of time, or something to that effect.

It is rather sad in its own way, and I have my own thoughts on that, but I'm not going to shit up this thread with those thoughts unless people care about them.

If you're still here, Don Quijote is a good option for cheap luggage if you need an extra suitcase. Depending on the airline and what you're buying, it may be cheaper or safer to buy the suitcase and carry it back yourself than shipping it overseas.

Another trick is to take a decent sized hardside suitcase with a collapsible duffel bag inside. Once you run out of space in the suitcase, pull the duffel out of the suitcase and pack your clothes and non-fragile/breakable things into it. Everything else goes in the suitcase. Pic related from my trip, I did the latter.

It varies from person to person and I don't doubt that there are people who come back from Japan enamored with otaku subculture, or with Japan in general. I personally know that my ideas of Japan at age 18 were dumb fictions. Japanese girls mostly look like flat-titty gremlins, the food is mostly alright but not superb, the countryside is full of bitter old people and akihabara, nakano broadway & denden town are mostly shopping malls for plastic trinkets and other people's used porn.

There's still a few things I'm interested in, and I don't begrudge people for liking things I don't if it brings them joy. But as it stands it kinda sucks that ramen, the Japan Alps, castle towns and the three good anime made in the past 20 years get lumped in with a ton of half-assed, mediocre content and culture.

Okay so going to Japan in October. I've been then in October 2016 and shot most of my photos with my Oneplus 3.

Now the problem you can see in the picture is, when it's cloudy Japan looks like it's some 3rd world nation tier. Reminds me North Korea pictures.

So I was digging around on the internet and found nice prices at least nice to me as a European for a Sony A6300.

http://kakaku.com/item/K0000857119/?lid=ksearch_kakakuitem_image

Considering it costs 1000€ here new and in Japan it's 584€ new. Thats quite the discount.

I also like shooting video so the 4k 30fps thing is fantastic. And the other features seem really nice too, the A6500 has touchscreen focus and stabilization, but for the price difference I can buy a real DSLR/SLR gimbal.

I also found out you can hack them to English later.
https://github.com/ma1co/OpenMemories-Tweak

I read katakana and hiragana just fine but my kanji are shit tier sub 300 known. Definitely not enough to operate this camera with it's technical jargon.

So basically since you're all nice photographers here I'm interested if this is a good pick, is there any alternatives you'd recommend. This would be my first SLR camera.

Also added bonus is it's really small so I doubt the customs guys here in Europe are even going to look at it.

>Now the problem you can see in the picture is, when it's cloudy Japan looks like it's some 3rd world nation tier. Reminds me North Korea pictures.

The key is post processing and shooting when there is better light.

A jpeg shot at the same time out of a Canon 5d4 wont look much better than that for example.

>Considering it costs 1000€ here new and in Japan it's 584€ new. Thats quite the discount.

A lot of the kakaku listings are web only. Might have trouble getting your hands on it while there for vacation. Yodobashi, for example, has it for 80000 yen body only.

>A6500 has touchscreen focus and stabilization

The a6500 is still worth it. The ibis makes a big difference shooting in low light.

>but for the price difference I can buy a real DSLR/SLR gimbal.

wut.

The a6300 uses the same sensor as a DSLR. I don't know what you mean by "real."

>I also found out you can hack them to English later.

Yes. But you get ZERO warranty support outside of Japan. That goes for ANY camera purchased in Japan.

>So basically since you're all nice photographers here I'm interested if this is a good pick, is there any alternatives you'd recommend. This would be my first SLR camera.

It is a solid camera, nothing wrong with it, especially if you can find a good deal. It is one of the best APS-C sensor cameras on the market. Personally, I'd recommend saving some money and getting the a6000 (though it is getting a little on the old side now-a-days), or splurging some more and get the a6500 though.

As for good camera to look at, a7ii is pretty cheap now. It is a beast of a camera, and can be had for dirt cheap now too.

Can also look at the Fuji mirrorless options. X-T100 is probably the best budget option out there. I am not a fan of X-Trans, so I wouldn't recommend the X-T1 and X-Pro1. They are solid options (though their autofocus is slow) especially if you intend to just shoot jpeg.

But what is most important is the lens. What lens do you intend of getting? What do you intend on shooting?

I'm from poor old Eastern Europe. My buget goes as far as 100.000 yen, so the kit lens will have to do for the japan trip.

Later in a few months I can begin thinking about it.

Ahhhh.

Yea, a gimbal is large and awkward though. The a6500 fits in a bag easily.

>>19943105

Kit is probably good enough. Sharp in the center, but the corners can be bad at some focal lengths. The image quality shortcomings are more than made up for by the fact you can pretty much pocket it.

If you want some awesome IQ, the 18-105 f/4 Zeiss is a fantastic lens and dirt cheap too.

Sandisk Extreme microSDXC A1 64GB - 20€
Sandisk SDXC Extreme, 64 GB - 24€

They're both extreme so v30, u3, Class 10 UHS I

Is there any reason to buy a SD over MicroSD? Technically the specs should be the same.

Class 10 is like 10 mins read/write. That is laughably slow. Most cards beat it by. a large margin. As for speed it is highly variable, you are unlikely to out shoot your card though.

The best thing to do is read reviews and see which is the most reliable.

>> No.19947169

>>19947074
>Class 10 is like 10 mins read/write.
Class 10 is MINIMUM 10MB/s read/write. Then they decided to stop using those classes and make a new class, the U1 and U3. Class 10 are automatically class U1, but some are class U3 (30MB/s minimum).
Then they decided to make a new class for video in particular, V6/V10/V30/V60/V90 which again corresponds to the minimum MB/s read/write speed.

So as they are both U3/V30 that means you should expect a minimum of 30MB/s read and write from those cards.

Yea, autocorrect somehow turned my 10 mb/s min to mins. I hate this phone.

And even with the newer classifications, 30mb/s is actually pretty slow. Memory stick Pro Duo cards we’re making that back in the PSP days.
Many modern cards are close to 100 mb/s.

>> No.19947925

>>19947345
The Extreme Plus ones that I have in my camera are Class 10 U1, say 80MB/s on them and get about 45MB/s read/write on a USB2 reader (which is probably about the max you can expect on USB2 anyway).
Most cards can do much higher than their classification rating because classifications have lagged behind technology.

Most long term residents don’t apply for citizenship. You have to give up your U.S. citizenship to do so and it just isn’t worth the trouble.

This was about ten years back too, when permanent residency was also pretty hard to get. Used to be something like 10 years straight in Japan without ever leaving the country. It is much easier now, either through the point system or ten+ years total in Japan.
