Why did whole-sentence or even multiple-sentence titles with question and exclamation marks catch on? Early light novel titles used to be reasonable, like pic related. Are we past peak title length?

General LN discussion is welcome ITT.

because it sold.

That's a universal unhelpful answer to "why commercial work X got popular". I am curious about why it sold. Was there one breakthrough LN with a long-ass title that everyone imitated? I've done a little research, but there couldn't find a definitive answer to this question on the English-speaking Internet.

They have a mass of words all over the cover in every direction anyway. That's how titles work, right?

How new are you to not know which one?

>>19789134
Porn should have long descriptive titles, otherwise picking stuff that you want would be a nightmare.

LN market has ended up that way because publishers are putting out tons of trash made by unimaginative authors in the hopes of random hit sellers. Most titles are already planned with a catchy acronym in mind since nobody uses the full titles in conversations, so maybe the next trend is doing a title that sounds like an acronym but doesn't have any meaning.

"Kino no Tabi: the Beautiful World" isn't that short a name, honestly.

Done. Short for talking to others about after you say the full title once.

People do that with the really long name titles too. What's your point?

If you are implying your pic was the breakthrough LN, that's too late.

There are so many new LNs that nobody wants to bother to read the synopsis, so authors just put it in the title. If they are creative the name can just be abbreviated like Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai becomes OreImo or Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! becomes KonoSuba.
It sucks, but that's how it is.

On an unrelated note, what are some good LNs to read? The whole field is so much filled with trash, that it can be really hard to find good ones.

I'm a huge sucker for silly titles like that, so I would appreciate the trend if not for the fact LN's are worst medium known to mankind.

>> No.19796275

>>19796232
Kino and Boogiepop are enough to redeem LNs as a medium. (I'd add Welcome to the N.H.K. to that list, but apparently it is not considered a light novel despite the manga cover and being published by Kadokawa Shoten. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

>> No.19796496

I hate how LNs never finish so you get these anime fragments meant to promote a set of chapters instead of a full, finished story.

Manga end and have clear arcs so you can art least do something with them. Even then, they will presumably eventually end in most cases so you can go back and do a remake later. Imagine some company going back and doing a LN over from the start just because the final volume released.

>> No.19797881

That and manga that go on forever, besides having arcs, if they don't end, they end by being cancelled so they'll have to get some sort of ending, rushed or otherwise. LNs just stop in the middle because the author doesn't feel like writing anymore.
