This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, visual novels, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Hello. If I start learning Japanese and I spend like 2-3 hours learning every day will I become "fluent" in Japanese in 1 year? Like read manga, being able to listen to conversations. Not talking to people because I'm not gonna do any of that.

you know I used to think vocab was the easiest part of language but these days anki is killing me and i just want to read and listen but I miss that one word a sentence, an adjective or something, and can only guess what it means by the character's reactions (or the kanji iwhen reading and then you have to check the right reading anyway), and most of these words don't reappear any time soon within the same work or even that commonly in other words so you have to add them if you want to remember it the next time you see it and have no yomichan/rikai* available

These people look like they rarely if ever have conversations with natives in Japanese so it makes sense their oral production ability is so stunted.

I don't think it would even be hard for them to fix their flow and talk normal if they had someone to interact with them in natural Japanese. If you're just talking to a camera there's no real time feedback on how sloppy or difficult to parse you are. It's why Khatz sounds fine in the video that got posted in a few threads over the last couple days, he's talking to a Japanese friend and he'd probably done it plenty of times before at that point.

I've only been at this about a year myself, so I can only contribute so much. Some ideas for advice to include:
- Concentrate on decently understanding a lot of sentences as opposed to perfectly understanding only a few. You should be aiming to get as much exposure to Japanese as possible in the time you have available.
- Re-reading a sentence more than once or twice is usually not worth it. If you don't get it by then, you're probably not capable of understanding it yet and should just spare yourself the frustration and wasted time by moving on.
- Use tools like Yomichan, texthookers and OCR, by all means (you'd be mad not to), but don't abuse them and fall into the bad habit of just running your mouse across all the text without even trying to read it on your own first. When you do have to look a word up, try to take note of its kanji rather than just darting your eyes straight to the reading and meaning before moving on.
- Read what you want to read. If you're only reading something because somebody else told you that you should, then you're not going to feel like you're reading that thing of your own volition and it's just going to seem like a chore. If you're not having fun then you're doing it wrong.

Would be better if someone further along the path than me wrote the guide though. I'm only laying out what I do personally and what seems to be working for me, but it might be that people closer to fluency than I have better ways of doing things.

pros of sentence cards:
ーdisambiguates which meaning and reading of the word to recall due to context
ーeasy to make, copy and paste or type in what you see
ーlearn the words with the particles that accomany them
ーeasy to grade, do you understand the sentence?

cons:
ーreading through reviews takes longer than vocab only reviews
ーyou're fatiguing yourself reading stuff you've read a bunch of times instead of fatiguing yourself reading new material

>ーlearn the words with the particles that accomany them
this is a good idea in theory but because of the small number of sentences in a given sentence deck it actually just drills specific collocations and ignores others. you get very unbalanced notions about what goes together with what.
>ーeasy to grade, do you understand the sentence?
if this is how you grade sentence cards then you're using sentence cards wrong

>> No.19753824

Another pro is that the context of the sentence you originally found the sentence doesn't just disambiguate, it also makes it easier to remember what the word means in the first place.

Personally, I use sentence cards for words that I figure I'd be likely to confuse with other words and use solitary vocabulary cards for stuff that's easily learned out of context.

how 2 lern japanese and get good at reading and listening

1 - read https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/pages/alternativeguide.html
2 - use https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/pages/kana.html
3 - grind
4 - AT THE SAME TIME AS STEP 3: read http://boirodaisuki.neocities.org/ or https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/pages/taekim.html
Do not attempt to memorize the grammar covered in whatever grammar guide you use. Doing so will only make that grammar more confusing when you start reading and listening.
5 - start consuming manga with full furigana targeted at middle schoolers, and for listening practice, anime and/or online japanese subculture-oriented video entertainment (e.g. 実況)
6 - start consuming visual novels, light novels, or "high" literature. anything with both narration and dialogue. it MUST have both narration and dialogue, as a medium. visual novels are close to ideal because they also give listening exposure and porn is extremely Compelling.
7 - look up stuff you don't understand if it bothers you. study things you have trouble with. don't study things just because people tell you to.
8 - do steps 5 through 7 for long enough and you'll know japanese
bonus - "but what about writing" it's best to not learn handwriting until after you already know at least basic functional japanese and if you can't figure out why then you shouldn't be considering learning to write yet
extra - at no point should your consumption consist entirely of non-dialogue-like japanese. if it does, you are going to acquire "advanced" grammar incorrectly without the basis necessary to truly understand it and acquire it correctly.

I got linked here to laugh at this old chart >>19753911

Generally I don't come of my own volition because I feel compelled to answer a ton of questions non-stop. The problem with staying on DJT after truly learning Japanese is that you know the answer to almost every question, which basically forces you to become Jesus Christ on the Holy Cross, sacrificing himself to help others (i.e. answering questions and providing study plan advice for hours a day). It's pretty much the same thing. An important step in one's language learning career is realizing you are no longer a beginner, and that DJT needs you more than you need it. Along the way, some people end up stuck in the mud of language learning and by the time they've learned Japanese they're way more interested in linguistics and such, but for me, the time spent advising and lecturing people on DJT would be better spent doing what I learned Japanese for: fapping to degenerate Taiwanese slideshows.
>>19754444
They're all approved by me, except Silverio Vendetta and Bradyon Veda, which are there largely for language purposes. Like Bradyon Veda is kind of a mid-tier chuunige, but holy fuck the language is some of the hardest I've encountered (TL note: I read it in 2015 so I dunno what I'd think now lolz). There's a lot of hard chemistry and it's just like sweet fucking Jesus I hope you memorized the periodic table in fucking Japanese. Silverio Vendetta is better but it actually rips off Dies irae so I normally wouldn't recommend it, outside of the context of getting used to Dies irae -esque language (which Silverio has, since it rips of Dies irae).

Also I just noticed I made the v1 of the chart so long I misspelled Dies irae on it. That's how you know I was a poser. I didn't read DI until after making it.

20 yo, passionate about videogame-making, my supreme goal would be to move in japan and study at HAL(tokyo).

I can fluently read hiragana and katakana, i know a bunch of kanji but have zero lexicon besides common anime shit desu.

My gf studies japanese at university here in Italy and is almost at N5.

I'm aware that i'm a bit autistic when it comes down to study and learning, cause i have my own learning system which gives me the capacity to learn fastly and deeply.

Can i manage to reach a japanese skill level that permits me to study at HAL with one year of neet study (I make money very easily) and 6 months / 1 year of japanese school in tokyo? HAL academy requires at least N2 or 6 months of "accredited language school"

People are always saying to only bother mining common words that you'll be seeing a lot, but that doesn't make sense to me. Since you're seeing them a lot, you'll probably just learn them by looking them up each time. Meanwhile, with rare words, you'll only see them maybe once or twice while reading a whole thing, so you'd be better off mining them so you'll recognize them next time.

That particular screenshot is nothing out of the normal. The hard parts of Bradyon Veda are the like, literal chemistry equations that are brought up during fight, and the classic chuuni chants/etc. I don't have too many good screenshots of the parts that blew my mind like three years ago.

But it's as>>19755883 says. If you equate "hard' with Mareni (who, by the way, even Japanese readers consider to be challenging, to the point of setting up wikis for the hard vocab and mentioning getting headaches reading him in their reviews) or pre-1800s Japanese or so on, then no Japanese will ever be hard. i'm starting to understand the idea behind using anki just for kanji readings. if you want to optimize srs items you need to test only one answer to one question. kanji to reading is one question and one answer, but if you have to read a word in kanji and recall the meaning of the word then you're testing two ifferent things which means double the failure point for the card. either kanji word->reading or kanji+furigana->meaning might be more effective than trying to kill 2 birds with one stone but missing both birds when you could have killed one bird and had a meal

read through tae kim's guide to japanese grammar, not the "complete" guide, and don't aim to memorize what's in it but only to familiarize yourself with the kinds of things you'll be seeing so that you can look them up later<br>
as for reading material, there are bad options but no real best one<br>
a lot of people suggest yotsuba with the biggest complaint being that the slang can make it difficult to look up words/grammar until you get used to it, but that's what i used<br>
be ready to struggle, and understand that there will be things that you wont be able to figure out, if you spend a few minutes on a sentence and aren't getting anywhere with it it's time to cut your losses and move forward<br>
every little bit that you do understand even loosely is what gradually moves you forward and so you want to get as much of that as you can<br>
aside from reading, you will probably choose to use anki to practice reading words written in kanji, this is the only thing you should use anki for and you should keep it from taking up too much time that could be spent reading instead - if anki starts taking an hour and you are drained afterwards then stop adding new cards for a while<br>
whether to use core6k or not is an endless debate, if/when you don't make sure you don't add every word you come across but only words you've seen a few times and are obviously things you'll be seeing more of<br>
in my personal opinion the reading of the word is all that matters in anki, definitions can be left to exposure and checking the dictionary enough times, but when you start reading material without furigana it's important that you read it correctly because every sentence you read is an example to your brain of what natural japanese sounds like<br>
remember that the answer to your struggles is always read more<br>
when reading gets easy read something harder<br>
eventually listen more too

Is there any good community for people to help each other with translations?
It's like every Discord server that has a Japanese channel or that is about Japanese language people try to help you to understand what you're asking help with as if you didn't already know what it means.
I don't want people to help me as if I don't understand what I'm reading, I already know, I just want people more experienced than me at translating to help me transform ideas or convey thoughts in English.

I don't know, it just seems like really few people actually know Japanese and when I ask people for help in a public place they end up googling definitions for shit that I already know and/or have already googled.

Even in communities dedicated to translating games it seems that's where there are the most people that know almost nothing and resort to using a dictionary for everything and asking people to translate the things they can't manage to translate with their own methods.
