>>19750807
It's the holy gift in Buddhism attained before enlightenment to become like water. You gain the ability to view anything from any reference point, and become a perfect reflection of anyone you talk to. Once you see a perfect reflection of yourself, you gain a lot of insight and undergo epiphany, because water is shapeless and takes the form of anything it desires.
You know how prized waterlike qualities are in Buddhism. The highest level of introspection is the ability of absolute metacognition. You gain a view of your own values and no longer have to view the world through them alone. It's true metacognition. Jung said man gains enlightenment not from imagining figures of light but from making the darkness conscious, and it's a reference not only to the idea that your dislikes are more telling than your likes, but that you gain more, psychically, by freeing yourself of a particular vantage point. Without love you can't be enlightened because love means this waterlike quality integral to yourself transcending.

This is why magic springs forth from the sea (water) of nothingness (freedom from static values), and why love is likened to understanding others. It's not about agreement; it's about putting your peripheries and values aside in interactions with others, whose entire universes, from the very atoms up, are composed differently than you can imagine from a static viewpoint. Only love can free you.

No. If I had to be curt, love is applying sunyata, the magical playground, to your values/interactions with others. aka your values aren't inherent and you can't let them supersede your understanding when trying to reflect someone else's thinking.

>>19751107
You probably don't mean the definition I do considering people don't tend to bring Buddhism up in their Umineko understanding, but this sort of love is integral to winning the game irl. Any successful conqueror, CEO, tactician will tell you to know your enemy if you want to exploit and overcome them best. Love isn't necessarily affectionate; it can be used to insidious ends, and with an inexorable resolve leads to the births and falls of empires, cultural paradigm shifts, the making of legends, apotheosis of man to myth.

Without love it cannot be seen. ...Hah that's backwards.
Because of love you end up seeing things that don't exist. Its nothing more than an illusion, one that no one except you can see, and one that even you cannot touch.
Without love humans would never have to sift through truth and lies.
Because we can see those, …We doubt, we suffer, we cry out loud.

How did 07th Expansion create this painful unreadable piece of steaming shit after the timeless masterpiece that is Higurashi? I've been roaming around Boston's clinics wasting time, money and a precious college semester to find a cure for my persistent insomnia until I read this literal turd of VN. I refuse to believe that based 07th Expansion made this, it's absolutely baffling. Other than saving my money from those Jewish doctors in Boston and curing my insomnia once and for all, this VN was a horrendous experience.

true, that's why french Higurashi stands out so well, the thing with translation is that you need to know the target language more than the base one, and that's rarely the case in "mainstream" french translation

french higurashi reads like a french story, and gets rids all the -sama and -kun that really puts you off the story

So a mix between Rose Gun Days and Higurashi. I'll pass, I only want more murder mysteries, more paranoia, more crippling fear as things don't make sense, and you don't know if everyone is weird or if it's just you, if it's a conspiracy or if you're paranoid, and the walls are closing in slowly but surely and it's just a matter of time before you snap.

So Higurashi-like VN, right? I want that too, but he did say he wanted to move on from Hinamizawa, not sure what he meant by that, but I can only think that he wants to try a different genre. >I dunno, Umineko was a WTC, and it felt lacking in the paranoia.
It sure did, but it still had that WTC feel to it, I'm sure he knows what he's doing, and Umineko, given the Magic theme and the ridiculous game between Battler and Beatrice we had a little chance to see actual paranoia. I believe we did see some characters breaking down a little bit but it wasn't Higurashi tier, again given the theme.
>And I have no damn idea how you can enforce paranoia if the story takes place in a town.
I don't see how the settings of the story would affect the presentation of paranoia. Paranoia can exist as long as the character development allows it.

>> No.19762394

Paranoia is best served in either an unfamiliar setting or a closed one. That's why the unfamiliar, countryside village of Hinamizawa pleased me so much when I read Higurashi, and why I had so much hope for Umineko when I understood the whole story would take place on an island.

Umineko subverts the expectations of those that already read Higurashi, so I would suggest Higurashi first if your friend is fine with starting with either one.
Is your friend going to read the latest MangaGamer version? That doesn't have the main 8 chapters released for Higurashi, and at this rate it's probably going to take them another year. Umineko is complete but it's only sold as a bundle, while Higurashi is sold individually by chapter which makes it a safer purchase.

Yes, you're actually correct and I'd like to revise my remark on romantic love to say that, while Umineko did not mean it specifically by "love," romantic love has Umineko's love as a prerequisite, so you could see it as a subset in the same way that Lambdadelta's magic of certainty is humanity's specialty, but magic itself is much wider than this one path, like how Wittgenstein described the language game (with a cute Borgesian flair):
Take a sentence to mean a path to magic.
Any sentence is a labyrinth. The utterance (magic itself) is a common exit point to an infinitude of underlying unique paths (or paths to magic). That's why language is its own cosmogeny: there are causal laws in place so that a specific starting point with these or those variables will always find its way to a constant result, and so that any different starting point or variable will almost always create a new universe, and even those with the same end underwent different processes. Humans excel at a small collection of paths, and for Umineko, love is the same excepting our new ability to start anywhere in the labyrinth.

To demonstrate you can look at some tree diagrams on google. The raw linguistic structure of two sentences can be different but end up as the same utterance because of the grammar. Magic precedes rules, but it's crucial to establish that, while Lambdadelta's magic of certainty is our proper path to magic, it's only a pinhole on the ozone layer alongside yawning gorges before the sun.

>Give them a sample of the soundtrack, that shit sells itself
>Mention the Steam release, to give your friend a convenient outlet to purchase/download the game

Don't:
>Mention the length at all, people will get scared off fast if they hear about how long it is
>Overexpose them to the art; Ryukishi's art has a tendency to alienate people who aren't already diving into WTC
>Give them a nyaa.se link and the witch hunt patch and expect them to dive right in, it implicitly sends a message that Umineko isn't worth their money (and to a lesser extent, their time)

I understand that Umineko wasn't made with voice acting in mind, and that the voices can somewhat diminish the impact of the incredible OST. Normally I might even agree to forego them altogether, but with how great a job all the VAs did, I feel like it more than makes up for what it detracts.

As for the sprites, it's more of a stylistic choice. I've heard some people complain about the PS3 ones being less expressive or lacking the intimacy and charm of Ryukishi's art style. While it's a valid point, I just can't help but admire the sprites for their level of detail and proportion, as well as the skillfulness with which they translate Ryukishi's designs into the more realistic anime-esque style most are used to.

Another thing most people seem to overlook entirely are the backgrounds, which is a shame considering just how stunning some of the ones in the PS3 version are. The filtered photographs in the original were a clever way to save costs for an independent game maker while adding a nice aesthetic, but I've never found myself looking at any of them and thinking, "man this would make a nice desktop" like I have with some of the PS3 art.

Honestly if it weren't for the dubious translation, I'd wholeheartedly accept the PS3 port as my personal definitive version of Umineko.

That's a good understanding of it, but personal bias isn't enough. Water is amorphous. It has no slants or edges, and these are as far as biases go, but to become truly amorphous, you set your most rudimentary values aside. These are the sorts of cognitive paradigms you take for granted until you're forced to introspect deep within yourself, but even further for certainty. Embodying sunyata is abandoning yourself to see your place in relation to others by becoming amorphous, yet perfectly reflective of any container you desire. This is the true meaning of ego death. Like just reread all the aqueous content with the words ego death in your mind and it should come together without any fuss. Ego death is only memed into being a consequence of psychoactives, but this is what it really means to say. Romantic love, familial love, friendly love, etc, these all come after you learn to understand one another by putting your paradigms aside and becoming water, or having essential love.
