DECEMBER 20, 1915

Late last night, a British destroyer seized the American freighter Hoboken in the fog-shrouded German Sea off the coast of Norway and diverted her to London. There are reports of minor American injuries, but the freighter's crew has not yet been released to the American Embassy in London.

This morning, an outraged President Wilson reaffirmed American neutrality in the strongest terms and demanded that Britain release the Hoboken, her cargo, and her crew. However, the Admiralty announced it would dispose of the cargo via prize court.

Britain's First Lord of the Admiralty Arthur Balfour declared the Hoboken's cargo "absolute contraband" under the Doctrine of Continuous Voyage, a legal justification which permits Britain to intercept contraband cargoes that might eventually reach Germany. Though ship manifests indicate the Hoboken, a private vessel bound for Oslo, carried only food, Royal Navy Marines reportedly took command of the ship after only a cursory search, and the State Department is skeptical of British motives.

"Norway has close trade ties with Germany. Goods and materiel shipped to Norway will certainly find its way into German hands. Food for German troops is therefore clearly contraband His Majesty's ships can legally seize under the laws of blockade," said Balfour. "It is unfortunate our American friends refuse to recognize this fact."

In several protests to London, President Wilson has argued Britain's blockade is illegal, and that goods shipped to a neutral country do not, in any case, constitute a violation of blockade.

"The Allies must respect our right to unfettered trade," the President told Congress in a dramatic speech earlier today. "Our interests dictate a resumption of our peaceful trade with Germany; Britain should not ignore international law simply because she believes herself above it."

Last spring, the British passenger liner Lusitania experienced a frightening encounter with a German U-boat just south of the Irish coast. Contrary to British claims of German barbarity, the U-boat did not fire on the heavily laden luxury liner, upon which sailed numerous innocent women and children, as well as over one hundred American citizens. Thanks to a British officer dismayed by the cold-blooded decisions of his superiors, the American government has obtained copies of several extremely sensitive internal British Royal Navy communiqués. In one, First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill states baldly that neutral American shipping is to be directed into areas of heavy U-boat activity with neither escort nor warning in hopes that "the more American lives lost, the better," as the resulting loss of life would bring America into the war against Germany.

AUGUST 22, 1915

At the time, it seemed no more than a chance encounter that could have led to tragic consequences -- had the Germans truly been the bloodthirsty savages described in London speeches and newspapers. Now, however, an unexpected revelation has cast light on what American pundits and statesmen are calling "the sinister machinations of Whitehall." Yesterday, the American government announced it has come into possession of a note that proves Great Britain's intent to manipulate the United States into entering the European War.

Most damning, the note contains explicit instructions to direct the Lusitania toward the last known position of the German U-boat.

Superior German gunnery and skillful seamanship has apparently ended England's long dominance of the seas.

Picking its way from its base in the Kiel Canal, the German High Seas Fleet on Wednesday afternoon emerged into the North Sea and off the coast of Jutland engaged a British fleet throughout the afternoon and night in what was probably the greatest naval battle in the world's history.

By the time the battle ended, Great Britain had lost the battlecruisers Lion, Indefatigable, Queen Mary, Invincible, and the armored cruisers Black Prince, Warrior, and Defense. In addition, the battleships of the 5th Battle Squadron, Malaya, Barham, Warspite, and Valiant, surrendered to German forces after suffering terrible damage and loss of life. Germany had lost the light cruisers Ebling, Rostock, and Weisbaden, and the cruiser Frauenlob as well as several light torpedo craft.

That the casualties in the fighting off Jutland were heavy is indicated by the fact that of the crew of some 900 on board the Indefatigable, only two men are known to have been saved.

If the reports are true, it appears the famed Royal Navy has suffered the most devastating loss of its storied history.

APRIL 24, 1916

This morning the world was electrified by the news that well-armed Irish nationalist elements have seized control of Dublin. An apparent coalition of various Irish patriot groups declared Ireland independent and formed a "provisional government" pending popular elections.

Reaction from other Great Powers thus far has been mixed. The United States called for the United Kingdom to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the matter, while the central powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary immediately recognized the new government and pledged their support. However, Britain's allies France and Russia unequivocally condemned the Irish rebels, and British Prime Minister Asquith described them as "a despicable fifth column effort to undermine Britain in her noble struggle against German tyranny."

In a speech to Parliament, Asquith decried the use of American dollars and German arms to feed the flames of insurrection, further accusing the United States of violating her neutrality by providing aid and succor to bloody-handed rebels. "British and Irish boys are sacrificing their lives on the fields of Flanders," he said, "and our neighbors to the west wring their hands over men who do no less than stab their brothers in the back and ally with the enemies of the Commonwealth."

At this time, the exact nature of the British response is unknown, but early reports indicate British troops and heavy guns are being shifted to Dublin en masse. There are rumors that several journalists have been killed, but no word yet on their identities.

The RNE makes its headquarters in Hong Kong, where it guards the British Government in Exile and plans the reconquest of Britain. The first nuke on Japan would probably be Tokyo via V2 or later model rocket, raping the government, top military officials and royal family (OMG NOT THE GOD EMPEROR!?!?!) Then Germany would move in through Russia into China and/or also an amphibious assault on the home islands if and when the IJN was defeated.

The basis for the events in Enigma: Rising Tide is essentially that the British passenger ship Lusitania was not sunk by a German U-boat in the First World War, but instead completed her voyage without incident. This event, or lack thereof, basically prevented the United States from entering the war on the side of the allies, thereby dooming the French and BEF (British Expeditionary Force) to defeat from the German offensives in 1918. With total victory in France, the German Empire formally annexes France and Britain (which was occupied as a result of the treaty that ended the war), and becomes the German Weltreich (World Empire). Upon the occupation of Britain, Winston Churchill flees to Hong Kong with the rest of the British government on the fleet flagship HMS Hood. In the haste of leaving the country however, the Hood's two uncompleted sister ships are abandoned and captured by German Forces. Under their new masters, they are completed and christened the Prince Edward and Kaiser Wilhelm, the former being named after the British traitor, Prince Edward, who stayed behind and helped the Germans form a provincial government for Britain.

League of Free Nations- The ironically named League comprises Imperial Japan and the British government in Exile, which is based in Hong Kong. The League is a shadowy group which seems to be hostile towards both the Americans and Germans, as they strike at both on every opportunity. The LFN fleet is composed mainly of submarines and the powerful task force built around the battlecruiser Hood (refitted in the 1920s to eliminate the armor problem that caused the real Hood’s demise). The LFN is led by the British Government in Exile, headed up by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Their lone goal is to retake Great Britain, no matter what the cost.

MAY 8, 1915

British passenger liner Lusitania reached Liverpool untouched yesterday afternoon after a frightening encounter with a German U-boat just south of the Irish coast. A steward spotted the periscope's wake off the Lusitania's starboard side, only a little more than two hundred yards away. The U-boat did not take any hostile action, however, and permitted the Lusitania to escape unhindered.

The U-boat's decision not to launch torpedoes stands in stark contrast to the dire predictions of the British government over the past several weeks. Despite persistent warnings from the Kaiser's government that neutral ships entering British waters risk all the hazards of a war zone, U-boat commanders have heretofore made every reasonable effort to spare innocent lives, in some cases even putting their own crews in serious danger.

In a desperate effort to thwart the German blockade, British ships have apparently taken to flying neutral flags and are rumored to be under orders to ram any surfaced U-boats they meet. The protocols of naval warfare presently dictate that submarines warn their targets and give crews a decent chance to abandon ship before being torpedoed. The German Admiralty claims several U-boats have narrowly escaped being sunk as a consequence of making this gesture of mercy.

However, the U-boat eventually did surface several hundred yards behind the Lusitania, and passengers reported seeing a German officer salute them before the submarine dove beneath the waves to continue her deadly mission.

We think the submarine skipper was trying to reassure us," said Mr. Alfred Vanderbilt, one of several well-known American gentlemen traveling aboard the Lusitania. "He knew we'd seen him and wanted us to know we had nothing to fear."

MAY 24, 1915

After months of intensive negotiation among the governments of Triple Alliance states Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary; the Italian government announced yesterday it would remain neutral in the escalating European war. Unconfirmed reports suggest England and France courted Italy to join the Allied cause, but that Italy refused after Vienna agreed to return the so-called "lost provinces" to Italian control.

n recent months, Rome has struggled to reach a consensus on Italy's role in the war. As waves of patriotic fervor swept the country, public opinion split among intervention in the war against France, long considered Italy's natural enemy, maintenance of neutrality, and assault on Austria-Hungary, an ally in control of several Italian-speaking provinces.

The dominant Liberal government remained steadfastly inclined toward a policy of "neutrality with honor." Consequently, Italy has thus far resisted being drawn into the war, even though the other members of the Triple Alliance, Germany and Austria-Hungary, have been fighting since last summer.

Italian nationalists at first advocated war with France, but this year threw their support behind an "Italian war" with Austria-Hungary to seize the "unliberated" Italian provinces in the Empire's possession.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Beppe Troiano confirmed that Austria-Hungary had agreed to return Venezia-Giulia, Trieste, and the South Tyrol to Italian hands, and cited the necessity of resolving the issue as a prerequisite to Italian neutrality.

"We are pleased this long-standing difference has at last been resolved," he said. "With this thorn in our relationship removed, Italy has no reason to go to war at this time, certainly not against our friends."

No, the Lusitania was a British passenger ship, as it's also mentioned in the summary.
However, over a hundred Americans were amongst those who perished in the sinking and this led Wilson to capitalize the incident in order to find an expedient that would have warranted them for joining the war against Central Powers.

OK Reading up on the sotry I do not get it. Basicly Germany beats France in World War I, this defeat somehow leads to Britan surendering to the Germans, I think this is partially to do with the fact that U-Boats are stoping fuel coming into the country.

I find it hard to believe England could be sucessfully invaded, in a short amount of time, with the WWI Trench Combat it would take years to move accross the UK. I just find it very hard to believe that England would surender just because France was defeated.

However the British Govornment Flees and joins up with Japan, because Japan and England were Allies in WWI.

So Britan is still fighting but at the same time it is not?
