Yumemi, Ellen, Kana, Kotohime, Chiyuri... PoDD characters could be very interesting their designs are very good. So sad ZUN still didn't brought them back. It's still possible but the chances are not that high

I like to think that the PoDD cast were all 'spirited away' from Gensokyo and placed in the 'real' world. They're all human-like and don't have any weird thingies sticking out of their heads, so they'd probably blend in with modern society fairly quickly.

Maybe they're all working on a project to permanently link Gensokyo and other real and fictional worlds together. Something like CERN. A fantasy superhighway, if you will.

Yumemi would be head of research and development, with Chiyuri as her assistant. Rikako could run diagnostics. Kotohime runs security (gotta keep those pesky interlopers out) and Ellen could do general housekeeping. Don't know what Kana would do.

If Sumireko discovered her college professor was working on something like that, I could only imagine the hijinks that would ensue. It's such an obvious meet-up that I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.

PoDD has my favorite cast in the series. IN's may be better written and TD's may be more grounded in its theming, but I always loved the quirkiness and dialogue this cast offers.

Aya is pretty popular, both amongst the fans and with how often ZUN brings her back, and she debuted in PoFV. I still tend to forget that and often think she debuted in MoF, though.

The designs have a lot going for them with their varied theming, but this game in particular overuses blonde hair and golden eyes. I would expect at least those aspects to be changed should they be reintroduced in a future game.

PoFV just happened to be the first game ZUN put her in. He wanted a character like her for the photo games idea, apparently. Her first newspaper thing even came out at the same time as PoFV's full version, so she's not really a character from PoFV in the same was as Medicine, Komachi, and Shiki.

ZUN doesn't bring these characters back because nearly every single design in PoDD is stolen. ZUN is embarrassed of his early doujin years, that is why he doesn't want to reference PC-98 stuff. Back then you could get away with stuff like this but nowadays it would cause a controversy. If these characters were to ever come back then they would come back with radically different designs. PoDD also featured Mimi-chan (who is not ZUN's character), Multi, and Doraemon as gags. Also, Ruukoto is entirely based on Multi. Really, the only original character in PoDD seems to be Rikako and even she might be from some obscure Japanese media we don't know of yet.

ZUN's said many times that with Windows he was making a (mostly) clean slate, and it's only after years that he's ended up saying "sure, if it doesn't contradict it's canon". So basically don't expect any surprise returns of anyone aside from the few that returned for shits and giggles.

Why? You act like what ZUN does/did is unique to doujin games or something, or like he doesn't get inspiration for his music patterns from other sources, or like he doesn't quote anime in character dialogue or use bullet patterns from other games. There are probably more modern characters equally inspired by shit that's not mainstream enough for people to have fully picked up on yet.

It common in doujin games but ZUN actively changed the name of said characters. ZUN respects Mr. Takemoto very much and before he started giving serious answers to PC-98 questions his only response would be "let's not talk about the past". These characters could come back but their design would change a bit. Some EARLY windows era characters are based on other character (i.e. sakuya/DIO, yukari/quon kisaragi) but that was completely relegated to subtle nods (not complete design lifts like in PoDD) and stopped after Mountain of Faith. ZUN had said Izumi Takemoto was among his favorite artists and the main influence to his own style. It's obvious that he respects him very much. I do not think ZUN would want to make money off Takemoto's designs that he took again. After all, ZUN never asked permission from Takemoto and he even changed the character's names and occupations from designs he took, making it seem like it was his own. They could come back, yes, but they would probably look different.
