19702827 No.19702827 [Reply] [Original]

https://www.okinapatch.com/

Fixes a lot of typos still in thpatch, and some of the common complaints with their translation

Overall, I don't think thpatch is making good English translations. So for TH17, I will hire a pro translation team to make a script, and I will release it to the community for free.

those images (manuals 4 and 6) have been corrected, ill update the files and upload a new version in a few minutes

One of the dirty tricks THPatch has is to use rare / expensive fonts in their images, so outsiders can't edit them. For example, the manual uses "FOT-NewCinemaAStd". Good luck installing that font.

So to make the fixes I did (such as manual 1, where thpatch wrote "president of Secret Sealing Club"), I had to cut and paste existing words in the .png and couldn't edit text freely.

Also professional translators put memes on their shit all the time. A lot of "pro" translation teams do their best in attempting to reach a wider audience by making the work more accessible, thus removing the need to research shit like honorifics to truly grasp what's happening.

Clarste is your typical somethingawful user (a terrible human being) and a Tumblrtard SJW who made a name for himself by translating official Touhou games and manga. Unfortunately, he and the team he works with have a monopoly on translations and most normalfags eat that shit up like it's hotcakes. It's not like his other translations were bad before VD, they were actually quite decent. It's mostly the ESL retards who fuck up with typos and grammar, who have no place translating Japanese into a language they cannot even understand properly (English). Recently, he has supported the translation of wanwan to doggo instead of doggie. A western meme like that has no place in Touhou. Translating www to LMAO/lel or adding a random "girl wyd" doesn't make much sense either. Sadly, Mr. Clarste stands by these ESL retard translations because "they're my friends and how about you learn japanese u fucking bitch". This is the state of the Western Touhou fandom. Appealing to Redditors and children will be more commonplace from now on.

You make Touhou sound overly sacred and that's coming from someone for whom it's basically a religion. Doggo, doggy, doge, pupper, or whatever it is it hardly matters since it's one twitter tag on like 5/100+ spellcards and most of them are dumb sounding shit anyway. The annoying www translations that will appear on just about every spellcard, the ESL-speech and typos were all far better reasons to get up in arms about this.
If fucking "doggo" broke the camels back for you guys and got you not only to make a better translation but to create better translations for future titles then the meme should be celebrated as far as I'm concerned.
Praise the good doggo who guards and preserves great translation quality.

Yea inserting American/European memes into an area where she'd not be exposed is weird.

She's likely only in the Japanese Memesphere and a lot of Western stuff won't cross over as while she's a dork, I don't think we've seen evidence that she's be going to the English sides of Reddit/Tumblr (much less posting on /jp/) because she probably can't get our memes without the context.
Outside her entire occult obsession she doesn't seem to be the kind of person who'd be deep diving into meme culture which a lot of this requires as man some of the memes here are so new (or dead) that I don't think they've caught on in Japan.
I mean for fucks sake they're only now catching onto the things like the SCP Foundation and that's been around for a decade or something?

For example Anglosphere memes are more easily pushed into the Eastern European memesphere as they more actively interact with the Anglosphere portion of the internet if only due to the fact that Russians will be playing on European Server clusters and thus interact with with them far more often.

Japanese are either on Japan Servers or the Asia servers and thus won't have as much exposure to us.

We tend to make a lot of those, and what's worse because we're native speakers/wrote it, when reading something containing errors we may outright miss it entirely unless another pair of eyes points out the issue that we automatically fix in our heads upon reading.

Again I don't care for Clarste, but I can definitely understand the problem of "not noticing errors in text even when they're right in front of your face".

it's also troubling that they added phrases like "Total LMAO am I right?" to try to make it sound like "realistic" internet speak. There's only one problem: I've never heard anyone say "Total LMAO am I right", and checking google data shows this phrase is never used by anyone.

Meanwhile, the actual translation (That's hilarious) is used millions of times per day on the net.

I have to wonder if this a case of "How Do You Do, Fellow Kids?" where people who are completely out of touch with modern memes or the linguistic usage of them are struggling to try and figure things out and just as making mistakes like this.

"Total LMAO am I right?"
would be better put as just
"LMAO am I right?" (if put out as a post on text based medium instead of spoken)
or as you suggest
"That's Hilarious am I right?"
(or even "Totally Hilarious am I right?")

For all our text based communication we still tend to try and follow patterns that make things still understandable if spoken.

'Total Laughing My Ass Off' doesn't make sense it doesn't flow right. "Totally Laughing My Ass Off" works though.

Do you know where you are? This is /jp/. Do you know what series you're a supposed fan of? Touhou. A Japanese series. You're in a site for people with interests in Japanese media in a board for the most rabid fans of Japanese culture in a post where said shitty translation was fixed by a person who actually cares about Touhou. Most people here would prefer if things were translated as faithfully as possible without being required to know Japanese. It's not as if this is all over one word, though, not at all. The initial VD translation was and still is a landmine of shitty grammar and forced western memes. "Doggo" was just the final push that opened the floodgates.

Yup, you got it. I don't think the translators were native English speakers. We know for a fact one of them isn't (German native).

Another great example is Okina saying "I'll grant you vitality, on the top of your psychic abilities". I showed this to my friends and they all laughed, because we know that "on top of" (in addition to) and "on the top of" (physically placed on top) mean completely different things.

The thing about second language speakers of almost any language is that they tend to learn the rules far better than a first language speaker, and thus although they may make several kinds of mistakes they may not make the kinds of mistakes first language speakers would. First language speakers pick up the language naturally and without much actual formal learning, so brace for many, many, many, many errors.

For alot of people its easier just too read whats already available rather than devoting months or even years too learning. Like it or not, appealing to redditors and children is probably a smart move for any translation group because most of the western fandom consists of teenagers and has moved to reddit, tumblr and especially twitter.

I think this new patch is a great thing but look at the size of the community it's serving. The number of primaries who post in /jp/ probably amounts to a couple dozen.

>Most people here would prefer if things were translated as faithfully as possible without being required to know Japanese.
Except when there are things that simply cannot be translated 1:1 from Japanese to English. The problem is when loud people like the guy who bitches about tumblr in every post dictate your conversation and you dismiss any dissenting opinion as "not /jp/". There are people here that actually speak Japanese and have done translation work that make points or disagree with some approaches to the translations, and some of you dismiss their opinions entirely. How do you expect to come to a true consensus? It's impossible, especially on an anonymous imageboard.

The main concern here is there is a difference between what different people would consider faithful. Eternity Lurvers inexplicably left "hanami" untranslated when it has been referred to as "flower viewing" in every previous translation and everyone here hated it. And for good reason, having your "translation" filled with TL notes is garbage. I am interested in what your solution to things like Mamizou and Futo's language or Cirno/Clownpiece's pronouns are if you are determined to achieve the most literal translation possible. These character quirks have no true analog in English. Leaving the manner of speech out entirely takes out something that is pretty central to who they are, and trying to find an English analogue like an accent usually is common, but not welcomed. Inevitably people are going to disagree on how these should be handled. Will you let a vocal minority dictate the conversation? This is a big risk for an entirely anonymous community. I think it's great that there is an alternative patch and that for the first time in years this board actually accomplished something it used to do regularly, but I do wonder where the line will be settled on in the future. Touhou is already inconsistent in and of itself, particularly early names that are now accepted.

One thing to mention is the idea of letting a professional translator handle it is a good one in theory but AoCF has an Official translation on Steam as well and it is riddled with errors. You also run the risk of your professional not knowing what Touhou is and mistranslating names, locations, or character speech as a result.

I'm not trying to say don't make your own patches. Again, it's a good thing that you actually have made one that you prefer. I'm extremely happy that /jp/ has actually done something beneficial again. Fan translations are inherently unofficial, so more options are always welcome, even if some of them are bad or flawed like the FF6 Fan Translation that also messed up grammar. When you don't like a translation, your options are always to either learn the native language and read it that way (the best option to get the full meaning of a work) or to make your own translation and distribute it to like-minded people. Just be aware that it is very difficult to come to a true consensus when translating because 1:1 translations are not possible, and you will have to attempt to find a line that is not always clear.

Literally nothing wrong with that.
If a character uses a particular word that doesn't have a direct equivalent, a TL should be used to preserve the original intention of the author.
Without it, the character loses personality. Like the way Doremy says "desu" a lot compared to other characters.

>Without it, the character loses personality. Like the way Doremy says "desu" a lot compared to other characters.
That's just the normal way of speaking Japanese, though? That's not a character quirk at all.

To accurately "translate" that, Doremy's speech should be normal while everyone else should be a bit ruder.

Because I know Japanese and I explained that any translation, including /jp/'s, won't be a 1:1 and you'll have people who disagree (i.e. Eternity Lurvers and "hanami") I'm a crossboarder? What world are we in?

I didn't defend thpatch's work at all nor did I bring up shit like www or doggo. I said repeatedly I'm glad there is a /jp/ patch and that if you think thpatch is shit the best options are to learn Japanese or make your own translation. I am curious as to how /jp/ will handle these things in the future with more dubious things like Mamizou's speech. Will OP's professional be good enough or will it require rewrites? These are things you'll need to discuss.

God forbid we try to have an actual discussion about a /jp/ translation project in a thread about /jp/ translations.

depends on the situation. sometimes it can be tricky. for example, Mai uses "boku" which tells you a lot about her personality, but THPatch didn't come up with a solution to convey this.

But if a character uses something weird like -cchi or -dono I think you should just leave it as is. Prison School's translation did that (Gakuto still used "-dono" in English) and it was a very good translation.

I find it incredibly funny that the literal translators tell people not to post about their translation if they don't like it, after spending several days posting non-stop about a translation they didn't like.

>> No.19709145

It all boils down to translators being too fucking stuck up. Knowledge of Japanese language does not make you a fucking god in how it should be localized into English, ESL or not. It'd literally be no fucking effort at all for the ThPatch team to make a "more literal" fork by simply editing the controversial lines but no, it had to reach the point that /jp/ is making alternative patches, and you can see how salty they are being with all the crossposts in this thread.

Moreover, it baffles me that the "unless you can read the entire game in Japanese you have no right to comment" argument is still being fucking thrown around, as if languages are a fucking 0/1 switch. Reminds me of the whole Gabriel DropOut situation in which retards kept defending the memetic translations until the "いただきます" situation broke the camel's back.

Again, Mamizou's speech comes to mind. She "talks like an old man" in a way that has no English analogue, even if the individual words she's using can basically be translated 1:1. Do we translate the words, and lose the strucutral meaning, or do we convey the structural meaning through more liberal translation of the words?

Here's the issue, retard. Hanami is Japanese, but pretty much everyone agrees on calling it "flower viewing". But if you called it Hanami in everything for a couple of years, there would be weebs EVERYWHERE demanding that it never be translated again to preserve the deep Japanese meaning.

The reasoning for translating or not translating certain words is entirely based on the random whims of random translators over the years. Tanabata or Star Festival, Hinamatsuri or Girl's Day, there are valid reasons for each option depending on the work.

It's absolutely absurd to suggest that there's some magical list of "local words" that should be left untranslated, or that even 50% of people could agree on such a list.

No shit there is a difference, but there is a line that must be drawn somewhere on what is being left untranslated and what will be conveyed through English. Depends entirely on how you define "acceptable".

If they did the exact same job but without "doggo" and "LMAO", you wouldn't see any threads about this. If they did the exact same job, but with competent translators who aren't ESLs pumping text through Google translate and coming up with shit like "dime" and "on the top of", you would see just as many threads because translation quality doesn't actually matter to reactionary crossboarders, they're all just upset that the "right" memes aren't being used.

If you've been on /jp/ for more than a week you should know that understanding perfect Japanese isn't a requirement to be on /jp/, such that even DJT ended up getting moved here. What people from here tend to have is instead at least a decent idea of how the Japanese language works, and a familiarity with its culture - two things that poor localization jobs like what thcrap puts out. And on top of that, there's also how not needing a translation doesn't forbid you from discussing it. If anything, being experienced with the language gives you even more room to argue about all the flaws in a particular localization work.

The problem is that there's not a single linear measure of the quality of a translation.

An optimal translation for "conveying the literal meaning of the words" is different from an optimal translation for "conveying the tone of the sentence" is different from an optimal translation for "conveying the personality of the speaker".

Which of these is "aiming for 1:1"?

In my experience, projects that spawn from shitfits like this typically are run by dev teams that are just as allergic to criticism as the people they rebelled against. I don't want Nega Clarste to turn /jp/ into his personal home for OkinaPatch (TM)
>>19709619
So you understand why I just don't think that this is going to work, right? Open source projects always need a critical mass of supporters, users and volunteer devs to keep the thing going. If there is no interest in the project or there are too few devs interested in donating time, it will eventually fall apart. Right now this project is moving forward because people are mad about something awful forum users. When that wears off I fully expect people to lose interest in this and the fandom will go back to relying on Clarste for translations.

Using /jp/ as your main discussion forum for feedback and discussion doesn't help with this.

No. You're not. That would be the actual logistics of it.
You're asking questions about shit that may or may not happen.
Futo may never appear again.
Nemuno may cease to exist.
This may be the last we see of Sumireko (outside of CoLA).
Everything else can be open to discussion upon release of TH17. Your questions are neither concrete nor constructive and that's why people aren't responding to them.
If you seriously wish to discuss that, then go to Clarste's tumblr. I'm not even joking. I'm certain he may actually indulge in it.

She's not a fucking American so the Texan version is completely out of character. I have no fucking idea why some people have such a boner for turning regional Japanese accents into regional American accents but it's jarring every single time it happens.
On that same note, Futo could be made to use "antiquated" words without going full ye olde English, and Mamizou could just "talk like an old man" as per usual for nojya characters. I don't fucking know. Trying to come up with full solutions to issues nobody's going to pay attention in a thread that'd gone into full shitposting mode a few hours ago and will likely never change back into something that makes sense until it gets archived in 20 hours is pointless, I'd be willing to put in more effort into finding decent ways of translating their dialog without ruining their characters if a serious re-translation project was created. I would like to know what OP intends for his professional translation of th17 because it will allow people a better sense of if it will be serviceable going forward or still not good enough. Most people just want a "good enough" patch which is fine, but for those wanting more direct translations where things are left alone it might not work. That would allow people like YukariPatch guy to prepare or offer more alternatives. Professional translators might not have an understanding of the characters at all which would require rewriting, which I have seen in other similar projects.

This is better to hash out now rather than scrambling when TH17 is released, because it will let either OkinaPatch or Yukari/KasenPatch devs know what people want rather than having another shitstorm after the game is out because they made a decision that people wouldn't like, like the Lurvers team.

Alright so here's the retarded question. Im going too be getting the game when it comes out on Steam in September (hurr hurr Steam I know), so is the patch OP provided going too still work with it or is something between Steam or the patch going too break somehow?

I wish postmodernism would just die already. Of course there can be correct translations, at least to the degree that a common interpretation of the signified exists between the two languages. Usually you wouldn't expect autism levels to reach the point where someone bruteforces someone's tripcode just to falseflag as them more accurately, but given how fucking mad this discordfag in here is I wouldn't put it past them. We already have your word from >>19713006 anyway so it should be clear that any new thread about this subject won't be made by you.
Anyway thank you for the effort, anon. I'll keep checking the patch every so often to see if anything's updated.

PKWeege is not a "THPatch moderator." His roles on the Discord server are as follows: Spriter, fangame_patcher, Contributor, de_crew, en_crew. Also, the screenshot only shows 1 part of a 2-part message. See pic.

>>19712980
Remember when thpatch assures you their patches are professional quality? Me neither. Still, it's way better than the garbage outdated static patches from years ago. Thank you for the shitty service.

Thread's gettin' active again! And this time there wasn't even a discord invite.

They only "fixed" it a few hours ago, after /jp/ fixed it first. And their new version still has ESL "English" in it.

That interpretation is still not going to be "correct." It will just be one interpretation that enjoys consensus approval among its readers/users.
>This is not always the case
This is rarely the case, unless we're talking about academic translations or technical manuals.
>just trying to blurry the lines in your favor.
False accusation. I'm outlining my problems with the Okinapatch translation, stating an alternative and giving reasons that support it. This is basic debate.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that the Okinapatch creator would use this as an excuse to build a personal profile on /jp/. It didn't take me long to see him try to do that, haha.

th16.5 comes out
/jp/ plays and an english patch is released and it is complete dogshit. Bottom of the barrel, normalfag crossie from 9fag fusion of tumblr and shit sites excluding 4chan alike, so /jp/ says fuck this shit and creates a patch of their own. Lo and behold, it was fucking legit. Not a single issue. And then all of a sudden the thcrap niggers jump into the thread mad as hell and steal literally every single translation fix /jp/ makes and argues that they did it first when logs show they made changes AFTER /jp/ FIXED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE AND THE THCRAP TEAM ISN'T CONSISTENT OF EVEN ONE BORN AND RAISED TO SPEAK NATIVE ENGLISH.
/jp/ beats the everliving fuck out of their team and someone leaks that it is the thcrap team posting assmad and buttfusmadded and this continues, turning a normal 150 post thread of native /jp/sies doing their own thing until the thcrap niggers roll in and literally shitpost angrily as the thread reaches 700-800 posts at death because they were so fucking angry that /jp/ made proper translations and so in denial that they literally have no comeback as some anon tries and fails miserably to assert his presence on /jp/ as pointed out by one anon as the thcrap niggers clearly beaten to death withdraw from the battle having been exposed and assploded by almighty /jp/ after it made it's own proper translation so it can finally be free of the trash like IN's "Move Bitch" shit and "don't give a dime" gutter filth translations as the thread closes with a site and /jp/ having an alternative to their niggerish garbage translating "monopoly" of Mainline Touhou games and their decimal spinoffs.
