It's not even an issue of sexiness (Koropukkur has Itaru art for crying out loud). It's just Steam blanket stalling every remotely animu resembling game until they finally get their system working, which honestly seems like low priority for them.

GOG might take this time to approve more VNs that were on Steam before, but I'd imagine that Sekai would have issues getting their recent big releases in due to all of the quality issues and the rumors of them. Well, Maitetsu doesn't seem to have many issues with the all ages version, but it's not exactly a big enough seller on Steam that GOG would be excited to take it. MG should have an easier time. I could see them having trouble bringing in Kindred Spirits fully uncensored, but the censored version Maidens of Michael should be fine.

Hata, you broke your embargo. We stated several times that this copy was for you to write a review, but not to be released until launch day.

You released your review before the patch was even released, you posted screenshots of unreleased material on your discord server, you hinted at a boycott on your discord because you were playing an all-ages version on Steam, and you have been constantly misrepresenting your role in the project, claiming to be a beta tester. You were provided with an advance copy of the game, not a beta copy.

>you hinted at a boycott on your discord
Well, i did hint but nothing happened. I wrote a big review and I like the game and I analyzed it thoroughly. Just the practices of even taking away a reviewcopy without warning is dumb because its not even your game. I can just get the japanese version and see what happens there.

>and constantly misrepresenting my role in the project was a misunderstanding which decay told me. The game was called "Newton and the Apple Tree - Beta Testing"

Just a lot of misunderstandings happening. Anyways. I am happy your game is successful and that the different censored versions did not end in drama.

What I released beforehand was a showcase of only the material which your press stuff contained.

-> What I did wrong and accept that I did it wrong is that I talked with bango openly in discord about the game. Bango himself then told me that he should rather have stopped me. I can provide screenshots of that conversation.

It was still a fun game, review and thanks for your time.

I'm a huge fan of the game's OST and all, but I have some misconceptions about how well it'd translate to a live performance given that the compositions employ some pretty huge and diverse music forces and it doesn't even seem like they have half of that there. That being said, as long as it were properly re-arranged for a live setting it would hardly matter, but I have some misconceptions about the audio fidelity. I mean, just listen to the ending example there. The very audible background hum and noise is something I'd expect of a live broadcast from the 60s, but for a modern recording? It's pretty easy to do some minor tweaks in an audio editing program and spit out a better end-product in just a few minutes. Here, I did it myself!

https://u.lewd.se/26KOaK_example.mp3

Took me just a few minutes, and, of course, if I were to put more time in it, I would have taken out all the extraneous noises, clicks, and thunks as well. Might've played around with the denoising just a bit more, too. Some people go a bit too over-the-top with denoising and don't leave any noise at all, leading to a lifeless recording, so I left some. At least it's preferable to the wall of noise that's on the YT trailer, though.

MG Weekly top 5
1. Sweet Switch
2. Evenicle
3. Treasure Hunter Claire
4. Tsui Yuri
5. Hapymaher

Evenicle being so high isn't too surprising considering Rance VI and Haruka sales. It might be selling less, but that may simply due to price.

I'm curious if Claire selling well will be representative on how Acerola games will sell in the West in general or if it's just a one time fluke. Well, more are on the way, so we'll see.

I'm pretty sure that Tsui Yuri is doing better than Maidens of Michael. Maybe it's the twincest thing. New Generation had twincest too though, so it might just be an issue of price.

Hapymaher being 5th a month after its release means that it's selling pretty well by plotge standards. Hapymaher had a strong preorder month, so it's probably doing better than Sorcery Jokers on the MG store, though Hapymaher doesn't have a Steam release, so that's a bit of a moot point.

>> No.19704757

>>19704666
Hapymaher was off of the top 5 for 2 or so weeks though. Maybe its because I didnt follow it too closely, but it seemed to do worse than nukige like lilipalace, and the other rpgmaker games. Its definitely doing better than SJ, but it hasn't really done well in any capacity.
It had a good preorder period for sure, but being 2nd at best until a day or two before release isn't what I would call strong. Unless you mean being on the upper side of the top 5.

>> No.19704826

>>19701287
Welcome and enjoy your stay, friend

>> No.19705085

>>19704757
IIRC, Hapymaher was 2nd during its preorder period, even reaching 1st on release day before quickly being pushed out by cheap HRPGs. Starnova and the Princess Evangile sale didn't help matters. Assuming that there wasn't a huge spike of sales because of the Otakon panel, it being 5th now suggests that Hapymaher had at least sold enough
to warrant 5th place under normal circumstances for the weeks it wasn't on the chart. Cheap HRPGs have always sold well on the website, and 2 being added onto the MG website at nearly the same time overshadowed Hapymaher's sales.

Now, I personally don't believe that Hapymaher has sold the few hundred or so to do well enough for MG to consider the fan disk, much less whatever Purplesoft's standards may be. Maybe if Hapymaher bobs in and out of the chart for the next few months, which isn't exactly overly likely.

>> No.19705116

>>19705085
I don't think it's getting a fandisc either, the Q&A session at Otakon pretty much confirmed that it's not selling enough to bring over the fandisc as the translator went out of his way to beg the crowd to buy it.

Evenicle selling so well despite being on the upper border of what Mangagamer will price a game is a good sign for the sales of Rance Quest and Rance IX, the former which is more or less guaranteed to be $45 because of its size and the latter which might be that high because 3D (though maybe MG would just give it the somewhat rare $40 price). IIRC, Rance and Haruka both stayed on the chart for about 6 months, and Evenicle seems to be on the same path. Alicesoft games probably don't have voice licensing antics since Haruka got a physical, so I would expect an Evenicle physical by next year.

Yo, Steiner here.

Figured I'd clear up a couple misconceptions. Yes, about five years ago I thought I was hot shit and started a series of events that ended up stringing along the Alicesoft thread. I regret it, but what's done is done. My Japanese at the time was frankly abysmal and I was certainly dealing with an inflated ego. I was in no position to be a translator. I've since made my peace with them and even reconciled with the other translators that I ended up causing hassle for back in the day.

That being said, it has been four years since that frankly shameless incident and it really did end up putting things in perspective for me. After a lot of introspection I ended up coming back to the official translation scene with a renewed vigor, and I'm proud to say that I've worked hard on a lot of projects since then. I haven't heard any complaints from my clients or audience.

If you'd like to hang on to old wrongdoings, that's your own prerogative, and I wouldn't blame you. I was certainly a certifiable retard and I was talking out of my ass. If, however, you'd be willing to hear me out, then I'd ask you to judge me on my current work instead of my past garbage. Since then I've worked on game titles like Valkyrie Drive, Dies irae (two full routes worth), as well as Light Novel titles like Infinite Dendrogram, Isekai Smartphone, and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen. If you'd like to read through any of them and see if they're to your liking, that would be nice. I am not the man I used to be, but I also won't reject the mistakes that brought me here. I will readily accept that I did wrong by a lot of people, and since then I've been working hard to be a better person.

As an aside, there's been nothing tying me to the Baldr Sky project, and even if I was attached, the screenshots Doddler posted would be unrelated to my work.

Honestly many big projects likely run into some delays and other problems behind the scenes during development, it just tends to be much more publicly exposed when there is a Kickstarter. After all, a Kickstarter typically occurs early during development and requires a company to put out an initial estimate for a release date (which generally won't be reached) and regularly update the public when other projects would be out of the public spotlight until they were closer to release. Beyond that, Kickstarters disproportionately are done for large complicated projects with more things that can go wrong.

You would have had just as much drama if MG titles like Himawari or Bokuten had Kickstarters early on during development with the problems they later ran into. Or worse than that, if Jast had ran a Kickstarter for anything sizable they have picked up this decade.

>I noticed an error in a line about the industrial revolution in the beginning
You mean the one I posted here? I found 1 other misTL, a capitalization error, and a typo. And I only got to the part where they got accepted to the dorm. I've seen a few screenshots of meme lines, so I know what (not) to look forward to. Don't even get me started on the font problems. If you want to get eye cancer, read the game with their font, even with the updated one. If that's not your thing, you either need to download the patch here OR change it in the game options on every single start up. Also, if you do the latter, bam, all the spaces are now underlines. Another thing - the input menu is not translated. If you want to change the hotkeys, you have to play the guessing game, because they even broke the Japanese.
It is certainly not as terrible as we're used to, but it's not excellent. Don't let it go to their heads.

I shouldn't have said all. All the spaces which are not directly in the text. That means choices, text preview in settings, non-colored name tags, and who knows what else.
I forgot about the inconsistency here >>19708133. The game and the glossary use different name order (unlike the Japanese version). As a bonus, I found a line where Alice's fat face appears next to the next even when it's not her turn to speak. But that issue is in the JP version as well, so I'll let it slide.

I can say I really enjoyed Fureraba, but I can't say they did a good job. Those are two separate things. The quality of the game itself overpowered the fact that half of the commas were missing, it was riddled with typos and bad grammar, and had chuee's masterful editing.
Not doing a bad job doesn't mean you did a good job. I'm harsh because most people are clearly okay with localization companies shitting in their mouths after paying for a VN. I don't know what needs to be done for all the QA teams to not suck balls so much. Give them a reward for every legitimate error they find or something. It's the same thing, every single release from every company is at most "good". On a scale from 1 to 10, I haven't read a single release from this year that would come even close to an 8. And again, this has nothing to do with the quality of the games themselves.
The last VN I read in Japanese had 1 (one) issue, where the voice line had a different word than the written text. And that's a 30 hour long game from a torrent created right after the release, so it's unpatched. But I don't read that much in Japanese, perhaps the resident JOPs who come to laugh at us plebs can tell us how common it is for original releases to look like the stuff we get on a regular basis.
>>19717729

Removing the functionality that existed in the original version is still a reason to complain, especially if you use a bad font. They're obviously using a small font because some lines were too long for the textbox. Guess what, split the line and have it continue upon pressing enter. That's what many other VNs do. It's the same shit with Happy Mare and its hugeass textbox added in the English version.

>> No.19717871

>>19717838
Fun thing about the cs2 engine: It doesn't support spaces in names. It doesn't support spaces in text options. The engine also cannot be modified under contract. The fix: A custom font that replaces an unused character (underscore in this case) with a space so they look right to the user. The downside of this approach is you can't really change the font without breaking it in ways you described. But changing the font doesn't really work well anyways, it only allows full japanese supported fonts, and as people earlier found some characters (like the letter J) don't display at all in a lot of fonts due to the game's wonky text rendering. There's a reason it's turned off.

You're right that the original font isn't the greatest. But it doesn't break the experience, especially with the updated text size.

>> No.19717934

>>19717871
Alright, with this information I'll concede that the only way they could have done things better is to modify the custom font to not suck ass so bad. Which they kind of did, but only after the release when a lot of people complained about it. Maybe someone should have reported that it reads like shit during the QA. Maybe that's why they okay'd the errors, because they couldn't see them.
But thanks for the lecture, Doddler. Hopefully the kamicompany which will finally localize Kamikaze Explorer will take notes from this.

>how common it is for original releases
Not really common. It happens mostly in the titles with the huge script size. I'm pretty sure that, for example, anyone who've read baldr sky would tell you that it has a whole bunch of typos, and it's not like they are all in one place that was badly edited, they are all over the place. Masada tends to misspell stuff, but given the size of his works it's... well, expected. Though I don't remember any mistakes in bansenjin, so I guess it was actually well-edited. From the stuff I've read recently, I remember a couple of mistakes in apeiria and hello lady, but that's about it.
So, anyway, it's more of an exception. Short works are generally almost perfect in that sense, though I can't say much about the doujin works, so I hope some other anon can comment on that.
