This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for Pokemon masters. If you have no interest in becoming a Pokemon master or don't know how to read katakana, this is not the thread for you.

Should I just skip it and jump to the based GS remakes?

>What was the first thing you actually read?
Flyable Heart.

>when did you actually start to read?
My journey to actually getting started reading was a long and shameful one. I first discovered DJT around 2012, I think, but I went straight from there to Namasensei's videos, and when I got to the end of them I had no idea what to do next so I just kind of gave up. My memory of what happened next is pretty fuzzy, but several years passed where I just kept starting phases of ''''''''learning'''''''' Japanese which lasted several weeks to a month each, before I would quit and take several months off only to repeat the cycle all over again.

In the beginning, I would read Tae Kim, or Genki, or do some other beginner thing like RTK or Core, and either find it too tedious to finish (RTK, Core), or get to the end of it then not really know where to go from there (Tae Kim, Genki) and quit. At some point I learned that I needed to read in order to learn Japanese, but when I tried reading I was predictably hopeless at it, and I took this to mean that I needed to do more grammar study. This led to me trying stuff like the DoJG Anki deck, but it was so dull that each time I tried it I could never make it more than a week in before I gave up.

By this point I had basically lost all hope in ever learning Japanese and felt extremely hopeless about the whole endeavour, but I discovered the AJATT site somehow or other and ended up reading through it figuring I had nothing to lose. The motivational stuff about it being okay to suck, etc., coupled with the message of learning by having fun turned out to be just what I needed to hear, and that got me to a long last just dive into reading without caring that I was really shit at it and couldn't understand anything. I didn't pick up any of the other AJATT stuff like sentence mining and so on though since I was more focused on just getting myself reading and told myself I'd worry about all that stuff later. It's about a year later now and I'm still going (though because I haven't used Anki all this time my vocabulary is terrible).

I was just asking, I don't say that Japanese isn't the hardest, it just doesn't seem to be at the first glance. I mean even if all the other exotic languages despite looking like scribble lines have only a few dozen of characters then still Chinese writing should be more difficult than Jap due to the sheer volume of kanji used, or am I mistaken. People say Jap is more difficult due to it having kana alongside kanji, but I feel like it actually makes things easier.

>I was wrong about beginners doing RTK because without having learned Japanese your mature card retention rate will drop after a few months, because a single English keyword isn't a powerful enough prompt to recall a kanji. Just blitz through lazy kanji (see kanji, recall rough meaning/keyword) in the beginning and do RTK much later when you're fluent.

Am I correct in my understanding of Lazy Kanji that it's sort of like doing RTK or KKLC while only focusing on the keyword and not a story? That is sort of my approach for KKLC right now. I look at the Kanji + keyword (and for obvious ones I memorize that it looks like so-and-so thing), write it 5 times in my notebook together with the keyword and then I check the vocabulary for familiar words. The Anki deck I then use switch between Kanji as front and keyword as front. So perhaps not entirely Lazy Kanji, but sort of...

I write them once as a memory aid, but I'm not anal about learning stroke order and being able to write it from memory. I supplement my Kanji study with vocab from Genki (because I've gone through it in the past due to college course) + grammar, listening, watching and reading.

Not sure if it's a good approach, but it feels okay-ish so far.

i can't remember why i started japanese in the first place. i vaguely remember wanting to watch anime while multitasking. i thought it would be fun to be able to actually look at the entire show and not just the bottom of the screen. i thought that the kanji looked cool too. i have been amazed by kanji ever since that episode of case closed where conan is solving a puzzle with kanji. i was amazed to learn that they were so complex and had many hidden meanings among them. but those feelings have long sense departed from the miserable person that i am today. when i see kanji, i don't think "how cool," i think "wtf did this mean again?" i'm constantly reminded of my failures every time i watch an anime, even if its subbed. hell, just hearing any foreign language does nothing but piss me off anymore. heres some advice for all you kids out there who think they want to know japanese: learn to code, or learn to build things. learn things that will be useful. when you've come as far as i have, you start to realize, learning japanese isn't what it seems.

No idea what you mean by the last sentence though. Japanese is pretty straightforward right from the get go if you've watched enough anime. It's just a lot of memorization that one isn't prepped up for unless you have some hardcore rising up by your peers/parents.

Guy you replied to here. Anki isn't strictly necessary to learn words, though what I've found is that when you're reading for several hours a day and encountering hundreds (maybe thousands?) of unknown words during that time, there's no way your brain can pay the necessary amount of attention that it needs to in order to properly take notice of all those words and start learning them.

For words which come up very frequently in what you're reading, you can learn them easily without Anki, but it's those words which are only coming up once in a while which are the problem. I think Anki's big advantage is that it forces you to pay attention to these less common words which you would've otherwise just looked up and then forgotten you'd ever seen before.

I can't prove that my vocabulary would be any better if I had been using Anki all this time, but I'm almost certain that it would've been. As for sentence mining though, I have some big reservations about that (the main one being that if you mine a sentence containing a typo or error without realizing it, you're then going to be drilling incorrect Japanese into your brain). I literally only just started a few days ago so I can't comment on the effectiveness of it at all, but I decided to try the reading-only cards mentioned on Jamal's site since they seem nice and low effort. Hoping they work out for me, but if not I might have to resort to sentence mining instead, in spite of my reservations.

Vocab has always been the answer, anyone who unironically believes in keyword shit should do something worth a damn for 3 months instead of sinking time into a language they'll never learn.

Hell, when I was learning KANA at the start, I used vocab to assist with that since remembering those was easier when I had a word in my mind to reference. It's a crutch, but after enough exposure to the words you get used to things and no longer have to worry about forgetting it.

It's amazing how that works when reading. There are Kanji I'd almost certainly forget if I saw it by itself on a flashcard, but miraculously I can remember them when I'm reading. Afterwards I'm like "no fucking way" but in context, it all just clicks. Knowing the words > Knowing the kanji.

The Learn ahead limit tells Anki how to behave when there is nothing left to study in the current deck but cards in learning. The default setting of 20 minutes tells Anki that cards should be shown early if they have a delay of less than 20 minutes and there’s nothing else to do. If you set this to 0, Anki will always wait the full delay, showing the congratulations screen until the remaining cards are ready to be reviewed.

This is why you are seeing cards in 2 seconds when it should be waiting 10 minutes.

>retention rate

The point isn't really "retention," the real point is that each time you hear/see a word, you should have a faster "lag time" between recognizing it and processing its meaning. You do this until it becomes instantaneous. You already have this with certain words - if you listen to the news, you have the によりますと construction burned into your head, and lots of other things which commonly appear on the news that you don't even have to think about now.

Ultimately, you're waiting for the words to "feel" like their meaning. 99% of you probably "feel" it in certain words already - 大きい eventually FEELS big to see and hear. 道路 should skip the english word "road" and should just feel like a road. 雨 and 雪 are just those things, and not "rain" and "snow." The only way you get to the "skip to meaning" part is hundreds of exposures. Anki should not be your source for those hundreds, but for the first 10-20.

Forgetting is part of the process. Remembering isn't the be-all-end-all. Context teaches, and reminds. Forgetting is learning.

Hell, you forget words in your native language all the time and just don't realize it. Of course, when you see/hear it, you're reminded that it exists and possibly what it means, even if you couldn't remember what it is if you saw it in isolation.

You don't truly "own" a word until it's part of your active vocabulary, which you have to do actual output to practice anyway. Most learners in /djt/ are light years away from needing to practice output though.

Why not study kanji? If you learn any word, learn it in Kanji form. If it's kanji/a reading you already know, you're reinforcing them while learning a new word. If it's a new kanji, or a new reading, you now get to learn that while also learning a new word to refer back to if you should ever forget.

Everyone learns 行く early on, and then you meet something like 旅行 or 銀行 and have to learn that sometimes, that fucker gets pronounced こう. Then you're gonna be reading NHK EASY and meet 行う and go "huh, how the fuck..." and learn that day that it can also be pronounced おこなう, all the while learning some fresh words and meanings. Then once you graduate to "real" news you're gonna meet 行方 and by now, attaching a new reading to 行 is piss easy, because it's only gonna show up in certain words anyway, and it's not like you spent all that time at the start wasting your time on the notion that 行 means "go"

Not that anon, but I just look at a character for a bit and it clicks, if there's a similar looking one I mix them up once or twice then I look up the difference and make a mental note. It's not that hard when you get into it.
I didn't have any jap experience before I started so it shouldn't be that different for you.
I'd still recommend vocab over kanji cause it lets you get into reading way faster and with less lookup, since you don't have to guess that a kanji combination is, and it's more natural in a sense, cause kanji on their own rarely mean anything and it can feel like you're barely making any progress despite learning a ton of them.
You can/should still look at kanji on the side though, it can help you remember a word you'd already forgotten.

I can't even explain how I remember some of the things, but 懐かしい and 壊す are a good example since they're remarkably similar except for the left component. I've never mixed these two up because when you see the words they're in, it's pretty clear which one is which. Sure I guess you could go "hmm heart one one and earth on the other" but desu you'll notice that with time anyway. Better to make those connections on your own and feel like

Same goes for ones like 末 and 未, what words can you think of which afford you any opportunity to mix the two up?

This is exactly how you learned English, so it's a good way to learn Japanese as well.

The critical part is thinking your OWN goofy things that you came up with yourself, rather than relying on someone else's. Even if you're wrong, you remember meanings based on your own knowledge and beliefs, and it's easier to correct wrong ones than it is to 100% instill the right ones from the outset. If someone internalizes 自ら by thinking 水から (one's own self is made mostly from water, after all) even though the two are not at all related, it's well enough that it works for them.

It beats the fucking hell out of remembering this wall of dogshit Heisenberg wants you to use, which doesn't indicate anything towards how it is read.

It can help you get over that first hump, but you can literally coast through 4 semesters of Japanese and barely be able to read easy manga so it kinda depends on your motivation. If I hadn't taken classes as a base I'm not sure I would have been able to jump into self learning like I do now. But there is the other reality that you can learn more in six months on your own pace than you will in 4 semesters. For speaking, you could always hire a tutor by the hour and get practice that way, much more effective than class for your time.
