Dont buy games, useless unless they are translated, and you can just download them. Same goes for doujins but they are cheap so what the hell, why not. Problem is picking doujins is a matter of personal taste, and unless you know where to look, youll only get the new figures which you can buy online anyhow.

Go to white canvas, get touhou merchandise, or go to toranoana and animate and get random anime goods. They have dakimakura and small pillow covers, hats, clothing and shit. But you'd have to be specific with what you want, and the problem there is, you dont know what they have.

I'd recommend figures. Any limited ones would suffice. If you happen to not like it, they usually have a high resale value if they're limited (as long as you don't open it). Maybe see if he can look for the limited Banpresto C.C., Wedding Azusa, Lineage II Dark Elf, Wave's Lucy/Nyu, almost any Volks and other stuff I can't think of at the moment.
