Each release I make a bunch of changes to keep it as close to the source as possible, but it keeps being reverted.

My policy is that anything that cannot be translated and would lose its original meaning should just be kept unchanged. i.e suffixes, names, cultural references etc. People should just google and broaden their horizon if they don't get something.

The point of leaving things like that alone is that they're part of some kind of culture, no matter how dumb that culture may be. Keep trying too hard to localize Japanese internet culture into western internet culture and you end doing things like turning "nurupo" into "never gonna give you up".
I do understand that it isn't a necessarily evil idea because you're "translating" things into other similar things that should be more familiar for people who are part of the culture your translation belongs to, but at the same time a ton of meaning is lost in that localization because you're completely changing what was said originally. I honestly think this is a case of "when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail" issue. Translators translate and localize things. That's what they do. So they inevitably develop a bias: when there is a choice between localizing something and leaving it as it is, they want to localize, because to them it feels more "complete" this way, like an "actual translation".
