This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

To those of you who are deathly afraid of misinterpreting shit and postpone "reading" manga.
If you know basic Japanese grammar (at least all of Tae Kim, except for certain literary expressions), you will be be able to understand most of the text correctly (provided you also use Handbook/DoJG).
If you do mess up a particular sentence, it will likely contradict what was said previously, the pictures or common sense.
And finally if you fuck something up really badly, it's not so terrible either, your very first manga sure as hell won't be one with a plot.

Now go and learn 日本語.

Generally, I look up every unknown word using a textbox and rikai. This is probably the wrong way to do it, but I don't feel comfortable just guessing and moving on.

If I just want to finish reading already I may start skipping some of the more obvious stuff - or, on the contrary, sentences I just don't get at all that aren't important to the plot (with fighting scenes being a common example). If I like the book a lot, I sure as hell will try to understand every sentence to the degree that I can. Even though it means I'm reading at a snail's pace.

By the sound of it, you are not surrounding yourself with enough Japanese to process that in your head as much as you are listening. I've had that problem before because I'm used to listening more than reading, thanks to the many years of watching Anime, and being into Japanese culture for more than a decade.

If you browse a website often, play a video game that you can change your region and switch the langue to Japanese, and learn how to write, I recommend doing so. Those is the best method I can think of if you're outside of Japan to get characters stuck in your head. It shouldn't take no more than a week or two depending how much you can, or want to soak in.

I'm not talking about guessing words you haven't seen before. rather, remembering the newly learned ones. take 左右 for example. The meaning is obvious to someone who has completed core2k, the only new information one has to learn about this particular word is the reading, which is much easier than learning reading, meaning and recognition for other new words which contains new kanji. I'm only up to 2.5k words so far, but many of the 2k+ words have been like this up until now.
I wonder why djt recommends dropping core at 2k if the rest of the way to 6k is easier than the first 2k part? (unless it's really not)

Listen up shmucks, or 童貞 fucks
While playin’ round yo blind-man suck,
Tryin’a bluff all deze niggers ‘round
With your mouth full o’ ザメン smells.
This goy’s in da house to tell you deze
That not one single o’ ya can learn Japanese,
N’ da more you try, more bound to fail
Faster than tryin’ ta get ching-chong tail,
Or scorin’ blows from 2d biatches
Or squirtin’ out your 援助 wishes
Cuz when yo try 交際 yer gonna die
Flip-flappin & gabbin’ yer カナ lies.
Not a single wunna ya fucks ever learns
That moonspeak fuckas takes months to learn,
And the 月s pass without progress
Cuz y’all can’t leave da /jp/ nest
Can’t swim yer own, too 引きこもり
Baskin’ in your own ignorant glory
While Anki’s waiting & cards are stalled,
Too much arguing ‘bout who’s getting blue-balled
Or who knows what, or だれがいい
When all you bitches are just 悪い,
Can’t rhyme, can’t pun, can’t even talk shit,
But whenフェラ’s done – can’t even spit,
Mouth’s too white for enunciation,
Skin’s too white for 日本語-nation,
Hand’s too white from the sensation
Of your dick enacting slick masturbation.
オナニーイズム’s the only choice, ya Fraud,
Cuz Japanese knowledge’s what NONE OF YA GOT.

I was not "in people's face", it was 2 posts and then obviously I would have stopped as there was nothing else to say. In fact I started googling possible grammar explanations silently under the assumption I would get no help but if I did it would be appreciated.

Then I got a bunch of kids get legitimately upset that someone dared be imperfect and call me a retard.

Was I expecting, DEMANDING, help? Fuck no. Would help have been appreciated? Fuck yeah, but it wasn't necessary.

Does that mean you have to be so black-and-white about it? "Hm... I can either help this person OR I can insult them. Well, I don't really feel like helping so I guess it's option B!" Because apparently it's impossible to ignore a question you don't feel like answering.

There's an obvious difference between asking people to pander me by either praising me or saying nothing, and getting upset when people go out of their way to insult you when it clearly wasn't necessary. I'm sorry you can't understand this difference, I really am. Not sorry for you, of course, but for everyone who has to deal with you.

It comes from some split of not using one kana for two different sounds, in which the grammar particle remained the same kana despite having the other sound because reasons, or something, google it.

Ok, so the Kongo-class were battlecruisers upgraded to fast battleships.
The subs I have for this say, "Kongo-class Battleship II -- A heavy cruiser," when it's labeling her a fast battleship in English onscreen, and calling a battleship a heavy cruiser makes no sense.
Then the subs have Hiei referring to herself as a Heavy Cruiser.
I can't find the words for "fast battleship" or "heavy cruiser" so I can't work this out for myself. What are they saying?

Are there any major pitfalls of remembering kanji only by the compounds that form words, and not by all of the kun-yomi and on-yomi readings that each individual kanji possesses?

It seems it would be much more efficient to remember kanji by how they interact with each other as one would encounter them, instead of just studying kanji and trying to remember all of their possible readings.

When I started learning, I quicky learned kana and read through Tae Kim in a week for basics of how the langauge works and jumped straight into a visual novel. And I can tell you all kanji for a beginner look the same. Like even seeing the difference between 大-犬-太 is super hard and actual similar looking ones like 網-綱 or 線-綿 etc is virtually impossible. So you have to draw them cause you don't know what they mean every time. Which is also funny, cause if I see new kanji nowadays and can't guess the reading, I quicky memorize what components it has and draw it in google translate in 5 seconds, but when you are new you are gonna alt-tab back and forth between game window and google translate for every stroke and it takes like 2 minutes to even draw kanji and by that time the whole "context" of what the kek are you ever reading is out the window. And if you only had to draw all of them once it would be nice but the reality is that the next day you'll forget the once you've already looked up anyways. So here's a true story and one example. I did just try to power through and persist with reading for a bit over a month. During that month I saw word 確認, which is super common word so no wonder, like 8 times and each time I just saw it it new context, my brain would go "fuck, I should know this, I already looked it up...can't remember....draw it again -> get mad that couldn't remember -> draw it like 10 times by hand -> 2 days later, can't remember it again, repeat cycle!" And to the point where I was about to quit learning the langauge. So if you are not interested in stuff with furigana, and I'm not (I'd rather shoot myself then read manga or NHK easy), recognition is a crazy issue for a beginner. It's hard to sympathize when you are already literate, cause it seems like you can tell everything just from context, like how do you tell the difference between 湛える and 堪える? literate person will say, it doesn't matter, you'll read the 傷の痛さを湛える even with wrong kanji cause you won't even look at it, you'll just read through but that's not true for anyone who's not literate yet so you need to put yourself in their position.

I could figure that much at least, but I don't understand what is being said. The context is that someone she didn't like was standing next to this girls friend, so she greeted the friend in a cheerful manner before realizing he was there, when she realized he was she said 話を聞かないのがきた. Is の a substitute for the person she doesn't like, and she essentially said " A person who doesn't listen to (this) talk has come"?

what's that video where steve kaufmann talks about how you don't need to stress yourself over remembering words as you come across them, rather every time you encounter a word it increases a little XP bar for that word. you might not remember it, and if you do remember it, you might not fully understand all its nuances. but over time, all sorts of words start reaching XP levels where you find yourself understanding a lot more than you did before.

in other words don't worry about anki and core decks, just read more. but seriously which video was it?

In the beginning, even if the guide is perfect, you'll misunderstand at least 30% of it.
Every normal language learner upon reaching the stage where they can read non-literary text in the target language relatively easily starts re-learning the grammar from the beginning, but this time using books written by natives (and maybe even for natives).
Not to mention that true understanding of grammar comes only from input, so even if there are any mistakes in the shitty guide you used as a beginner, reading and listening will fix most of them.

I'd say, it's when you no longer associate Japanese grammar with the grammar of your own native language and simply understand it, feel it. The words in vocabulary at that point also detach from the long lists of possible translations and become ideas, although you may still use them wrong or not know what verbs go with a particular noun; it's okay, you're only "intermediate", not "advanced".

Not sure why you disagree. IMHO, it's only the very beginning, the point where the language stops being a subject of study and becomes a tool you need to master.
It's like, you have a katana, and you finally stop using it like you would use a machete. But you're still just awkwardly swinging it around and anxiously comparing your every move to those of katana masters, always thinking that you're doing something wrong (and you most likely are).
It's been over 3 years since the English language became an independent body of knowledge in my mind, I can't even properly translate my own words into my native language because I only think in English when i speak. But I know I still suck badly and the online test I took on TOEFL / Cambridge exams related websites agree with me. I'm still Upper *Intermediate*.

Not as well, because there are large enough pockets of speakers of most languages that immigrants can surround themselves only with people who share their native tongue, and get by while minimizing their use of English. Communicating with the rest of the country through their children, bilingual friends, etc.

In Japan it's harder to get by without Japanese, from what I understand. There are some English-speaking communities in Tokyo, but if that's the company you choose to keep while in Japan, then your don't-want-to-learn-Japanese mind is so powerful that I doubt you'd put in the effort to even look at a grammar guide.

About to finish Core2k.

It's really useful because the words are so common, but after you're done with stuff like "school", "dog" and "apple", you'll find that the example sentence gives you more information about the meaning of the word than the randomly picked translations.
You might want to start actively using dictionaries and lots of example sentences if you want to have at least a general idea of what the words might mean. Be ready to look stuff up on simple Japanese websites, too, to know the difference between seemingly identical words.

you can read hiragana and reference a pitch accent dictionary and convince yourself that you're reading correctly, but the truth is that words are unique and have nuanced pronunciations that need to be listened to. reading by yourself in your head without a real spoken model of the language is not doing you any favors. though you will be able to pick out words you read previously and you need to correct your internal model of how that word sounds based off how a japanese person says it.
anyways my point stands there's no point in talking this long. just make sure you're listening guys. listening while reading is a good idea
